Marlins Cool Off Phillies Bats

Saturday, May 31, 2008 · 0 Comments

After 5 games of hot offense, the bats finally sputtered as Cole Hamels got shelled in his outing. The Phillies lost 7-3 to the Marlins and dropped out of first place one day after taking the top spot. They now stand .5 games behind Florida.

The Phillies offense managed only 6 hits, 2 coming from both Shane Victorino (both doubles) and Pat Burrell, who has been in a month-long funk. The other 2 hits came from Chase Utley and Hamels. Victorino scored 2 runs tonight as well and Chase Utley hit his major league leading 19th homer.

Hamels got roughed around in the fourth inning, giving up 4 runs, and the 3 in the sixth before being taken out with 2 outs. He gave up 7 runs, all earned, on 8 hits, 1 walk, striking out 4. Hamels also gave up 3 long balls to Luis Gonzalez, Jorge Cantu, and Cody Ross.

On the other side, Ricky Nolasco pitched very well to improve to 5-3. He went 6.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5.

Notable Phillies:
Victorino: 2-4; 2 R; 2 doubles (11)
Utley: 1-4; 1 R; 1 RBI; 1 HR (19)
Burrell: 2-3; 1 RBI

Phils Keep Rollin'

Friday, May 30, 2008 · 0 Comments

Brett Myers gave up 3 early runs and the eyes of the Phillies fans began to roll. Luckily at the end of the night, the only thing rolling was the Phillies offense.
The bats were red hot once again and Myers settled down as the Phillies moved half a game into first place, beating the Marlins 12-3 to win their 5th straight.

Chris Coste tied the game in the third with a 3 run homer, Shane Victorino drove in 2on a double, and Chase Utley hit a 2 run homer to cap off a 7 run third inning. In the fourth, Ryan Howard it a 3 run homer and a bases loaded walk would end their scoring in the 7th.

Myers' win was his first in 43 days. He pitched 8 strong innings after his rough first inning, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 11. Clay Condrey pitched a perfect ninth, striking out 2.

The offense was spread out as only Utley and Pedro Feliz were the only two to have 2 hits. Pat Burrell was the only starter to not get a hit.

The Phillies took their win streak to 5 games. They are now .5 games in first and 8 games above .500.

Notable Phils:
Victorino - 1-5; 2 R; 2 RBI; double
Utley - 2-5; 2 R; 2 RBI; home run - Major League leading 18th
Howard - 1-2; 3 R; 3 RBI; home run (15th)
Coste - 1-3; 1 R; 3 RBI; home run (5th)
Myers - 8 IP; 6 H; 3 R; 3 ER; 11 SO

Face-Off for First Place

During the next 3 days, the two best second-baseman in baseball will face off against each other. Both Dan Uggla and Chase Utley are coming into this weekend with amazing numbers for any players, let alone middle infielders. Both players will help their respected team maintain or take over first place in the division.

Thus far, Chase Utley has received the most votes among in National League player with 537,788 votes. He leads all second baseman by over 350,000 votes, including Dan Uggla, who has 125,745.

Chase Utley comes into the game hitting .310 avg/.394 obp/.638 slugging, with an OPS of 1.032. Utley also had 42 R, 16 2B, 1 3B, 17 HR, 46 RBI, and 5 steals. Also, Utley has only struck out 33 times thus far, which is below his career average. Chase Utley is constantly mentioned in MVP talks because of his demeanor and his defensive ability. He's one of the best all-around players in baseball.

Dan Uggla is also have an exceptional year. Uggla comes into the series hitting .307 avg/.386 obp/.667 slg and an OPS of 1.053. Uggla has scored 41 times while adding 19 doubles, 1 triple, 16 HR, and 38 RBI. He has struck out 58 times and stolen 2 bases.

The upcoming series will be filled with left-handed pitching, 2 starters for each team. Tonight, 6'9" Mark Hendrickson will face off against Brett Myers. The Phillies have lost the last 6 games Myers has started and he has not recorded a win since April 17th. Myers allows a whopping 1.64 baserunner an inning and that is intolerable for any pitcher, let alone for someone considered "1A" or "1B". Last year, the Phillies offense pounded Hendrickson for 7 runs in 5 innings when he pitched for the Dodgers. Hendrickson is a sinker ball pitcher and combined with his height, you'd expect to see him leave the ball up in the zone at times. The Phillies have hitters that will destroy those mistakes.

On Saturday, Cole Hamels will battle against Ricky Nolasco. Hamels is coming off his worst start of the year after throwing back-to-back scoreless games. He's also come off his first game where he failed to manage at least one strike-out since his rookie year. Ricky Nolasco is over .500, but allows a decent amount of base runners and teams hit .273 off him. I will be in attendance.

Two lefties will face off during Sunday's matinee as Moyer takes on rookie Andrew Miller. If you look at the current Marlins rotation, you will question how the team is in first place. They allow a number of base runners (see Miller's 1.68 WHIP), but they survive by their offense. Miller has an ERA well over 5 and he is a left-handed pitcher that Phillies should be able to take care of. Jamie Moyer has earned a win in his last 3 starts, so let's hope that he continues his winning streak.

Things line-up well for the Phillies though because the Marlins only hit .224 off left-handed pitching with an OPS of .684. To compare, they hit .272 off righties with an OPS of .811.

The Phillies hit .257 off left-handed pitching with an OPS of .835. One problem though is that Jayson Werth will still not be in the line-up and he absolutely kills lefties.

Training Camp is Almost Near - Eagles News

There are reports that Lito Sheppard may become a two-way player. According to the Delco Times and 950 ESPN Radio, the Eagles want to work Lito Sheppard at the Wide Receiver position as well. In the past, Sheppard has voiced his desire to get some reps on the offensive side.

If this happens, I have one question. Will the player that is not satisfied with his contract for playing one position be okay with his contract to play two? Some Eagles players feel that not only is Sheppard the fastest on the team, but that he also has the best hands.

If Andy gives this a legit look, I will be shocked, but he has seemed to take more of an aggressive approach this season. Will Sheppard be joining McNabb for his invitation-only practices out in Arizona...as a receiver. Let's just hope that he shows up for full-squad TOAs next week.

In other Eagles News, they have made 3 moves with the front office. First, the Eagles fired Jason Licht (VP of player personnel) and they hired Howie Roseman to replace him. Lastly, the Eagles extended the contract of general manager, Tom Heckert, through 2011. [Comcast Sportsnet]

Tom’s leadership and work ethic has continued to impress me over the years,” head coach and executive vice president of football operations Andy Reid said in a statement. “Tom has also done a great job of nurturing and incorporating Howie’s talent into the personnel side of the organization. Howie has demonstrated a sharp eye for talent evaluation along with a knack for creative draft and free-agent strategies.”
Lastly, the Eagles signed S Quintin Demps to a four-year deal. Demps is the first of the Eagles draft picks to sign.

Phillies Complete the Sweep

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 · 0 Comments

The Phillies bats weren't exactly fireworks again, but they took advantage of 8 walks by Greg Reynolds and used their power stroke to complete the season sweep of the Rockies with a 6-1 win. Chase Utley hit a 3-run home run in the 5th inning and Geoff Jenkins later followed with a 2-run home run as well. (Highlights after the jump)

Adam Eaton pitched well again for the Phillies with his 6th quality start and earned his 1st win of the year. Eaton pitched 6 strong innings, giving up 1 earned on 4 hits and only 1 walk. Except for the third inning, Eaton stayed out of trouble on way to his best start of the year. Keep in mind, Eaton had a very good May last year, but it was the summer month when he exploded.
The Phillies scored in the first when Geoff Jenkins was walked with the bases loaded to bring home Shane Victorino. Shane Victorino extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Chase Utley's home run was his 17th in the year and he upped his RBI total to 46. Jenkins hit his 4th home run of the year and now has 14 RBIs.

Justice Ready to Prove his Worth?

A number of people around the Eagles organization, including Hugh Douglas, feel that Winston Justice has no heart or the mentality to be a successful player. [Philadelphia Daily News]

If they don't bite when they're puppies, they're not going to bite when they're grown dogs,'' Douglas, the former Eagles Pro Bowl defensive end, said over the phone last night, repeating what he has said about Justice on WIP-610 AM's Morning Show. "It just doesn't look like he has any fight in him. If you look at his demeanor, it's like he's not even a football player.''
Many of Douglas' comments stem back from the September 30 game against the New York Giants when Justice virtually allowed Osi Umenyiora to murder quarterback Donovan McNabb. When asked if Douglas was the first one to question his hurt, he explained that Douglas was the first do it aloud.
There's nothing I can really say,'' Justice said. "The only thing I can do is prove it [isn't true] by my actions . . . There's no need to say anything to him.

"He's not the only one who thinks that. This [season] is my chance to prove him wrong.''
Someone has to let Winston Justice know that he is vital to the Eagles' future success as he will likely be the replacement for either of their aging tackles, Tra Thomas and John Runyan -- well, if he improves his demeanor. Coming out of USC, Winston Justice fell out for the first round because he had character concerns then. Hopefully, something has clicked and changed this year. Justice feels that he has something to prove and let's hope that maturity has checked in.

Justice is currently attending rookie mini-camp has one of the "select veterans." I truly hope that Justice finally comes around.

Benson to make first Clearwater start

Kris Benson will make his first minor league start on Sunday for Single-A Clearwater. Benson has been listed as day-to-day for over 2 months.
[Philadelphia Daily News]

Benson pitched another extended spring training game and he did well as he allowed 1 run on 3 hits and struck out 4. Also, his fastball topped out at 90 mph, when he was previously only hitting 88.

It was encouraging for him, and it was encouraging for us," said Ruben Amaro Jr., the Phillies assistant general manager who generally comments on health-related issues.
Benson will likely throw about 75 pitches on Sunday. It is still unclear on when Benson will be ready to compete for a start in the rotation. Amaro, Jr. said that it will depend on his progress.

This is definitely positive news for the Phillies who are looking to add a better piece to the rotation than Adam Eaton. According to Jim Salisbury, The Phillies have already lined up Antonio Bastardo's starts with Eaton's, but it is hard to imagine him progressing through the ranks that quickly. The Phillies have also lined up J.A. Happ with Brett Myers' starts. Personally, I think Myers has an injury.

NY Mets = 2007 N.L East Champs

Wait, that's not correct; however, if you take a trip Queens and you're handed a tourism brochure, it says so.

Shea Stadium, built in 1962, is home to the 2007 National League East Division Champion New York Mets professional baseball club," the brochure wrongly proclaims.

Actually, groundbreaking on the Flushing ballpark began in October 1961 and it didn't open until April 1964, but those gaffes pale compared with ignoring that the Mets blew a seven-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies with 17 games to play last fall.
The Mets themselves were surprised to see this mistake printed in 45,000 brochures. They never saw or approved the 2007 brochure. The borough spent $9,300 on the brochures and have claimed that any future printings will carry the correct information.

Queens Borough president, Helen Marshall, said that they feel the error was related to wishful thinking.

Psh, you call that offense?

The Phillies scored early and often to jump out to a 7-0 lead before the third inning. However, they would not score anymore runs and it was enough to hold the lead the rest of the game.

Kyle Kendrick pitched 7.1 innings and allowed only 2 earned on 7 hits and 1 walk. He also stuck out 5 Rockies. Kyle Kendrick lowered his ERA to 4.84 and it starting to look like the consistent pitcher who hit his spots last year. During his ups and downs, his composure remained the same and positive. Tom Gordon and Brad Lidge pitched the rest of the game and they both allowed 1 earned. Kendrick is now 4-2 on the season. The Phillies are 7-2 in his starts.

Rockies' pitcher, Ubaldo Jimenez, pitched well, but the Phillies just hit everything they saw in the first two innings. After the first two innings, they only had 2 hits the rest of the game in what looked like an attempt to make sure the game was official before the rain came. The same rain that later cause an a delay of more than an hour.

In the first, Rollins, Victorino, and Ryan Howard all got on to load the bases with 1out when Dobbs dropped a single into right. Rollins scored and Victorino knocked catcher Yorvit Torrealba out of the way.

Utley got it going in the 2nd with an RBI double to score in Rollins. Howard drove Utley in with an RBI double and then scored on Jenkins' RBI double, capping off the scoring for the game.

After 35 runs the past 2 games and 42 total in 20 innings, it seems as if the Phillies offense cooled off. Hopefully that was just last night because they will need plenty of runs tonight with Adam Eaton (0-3, 5.37) on the hill as he faces the Rockies' Greg Reynolds (0-1, 4.08).

Where will the Sixers draft?

The Sixers have an obvious need for a scorer at the power forward position or the front line, but there will be likely no one to offer immediate impact at their 16th pick. A few names that may be around there are Mareese Speights (Florida), Roy Hibbert (Georgetown), JaVale McGee (Nevada), and Robin Lopez (Stanford).

Speights is the only prospect of the 4 that is listed as a PF. Speights entered the draft after his sophomore season, in which he averaged 14.5 points, 8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and shot 69% from the field. His shooting percentage gives you the idea that most of his shots came from close to the rim.

Another position of need is a point guard for the future and there are 2-3 names that might be available for the Sixers to call upon.

First, there is Texas sophomore point guard, D.J. Augustin who scored 19.2 points, dished out 5.8 assists, and recorded 3 rebounds. The one knock on Augustin is that he is barely 6 foot, if that, something that may cause him to slip a little in the draft. However, he does have the ability to create plays and find the open, in addition to being able to hit his shots. In the NBA, I'd expect him to be more of a traditional point guard.

Secondly, the Sixers could look at Kansas junior, Mario Chalmers. Chalmers is listed as 6'1" and he can shoot better from behind the arc than Augustin (47%). Last year, Chalmers averaged about 13 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2.5 steals. Chalmers was a big reason why the Kansas Jayhawks were crowned National Champions. If the Sixers consider Chalmers, they may be able to trade back and out of the 16th slow into the 20-24 range if they'd like.

Lastly, they could look at UNC sophomore Ty Lawson. Lawson missed a few games due to injury, which curbed his minutes at the end of the year, but he still averaged 12.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. He shot 51.5% from the field, which is good for a point guard. Lawson is another player that gives the Sixers the option to trade back in this draft to net future picks or a player.

Blowouts are fun!

Monday, May 26, 2008 · 3 Comments

Maybe the Phillies' starters need to give up 3-run home runs every first inning because it seems to spark the offense. After scoring 15 runs yesterday, the Phillies put 20 on the board today to beat the Rockies 20-5. Jamie Moyer improved to 5-3 and struck out 7.

The other great news, Jamie Moyer now has recorded a win against every Major League team. Moyer came into the game 0-4 lifetime against the Rockies and his start looked dim after a Ryan Spilborghs home run, but Moyer settled down after Utley tied the game at 3 in the bottom half of the first with a 3-run bomb himself. Chase Utley also set a career high with 6 rbi's tonight, feel free to see the rest of the box scores below.

Every starter reached base and Pat Burrell was the only one without a hit. Also, every pinch-hitter recorded a hit, except for pitcher Clay Condrey who batted for himself. Wow, you rarely see something like that happen. Also, the only players with RBIs were Bruntlett, Moyer, Burrell, and Victorino.

Jimmy Rollins - 1-4, 2 R, 1 rbi, 1 BB
Bruntlett - 1-1, 1 R
Victorino - 1-2, 4 R, 2 BB
Utley - 3-6, 2 R, 6 RBI, 1 HR
Howard - 1-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, 3 BB
Burrell - 0-4, 1 BB
Bohn - 1-1, 1 RBI
Feliz - 4-6, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 2B
Coste - 3-6, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B
Taguchi - 3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 2B
Condrey - 0-1
Moyer - 0-1, 1 R, 1 BB
Dobbs - 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B

19 total hits and 28 total base runners.

The Phillies offense exploded yesterday during the 6th and 7th innings to pound the Astros 15-6. It was a game that at one point looked dismal because Cole Hamels did not have his best stuff and the Astros jumped out to a 6-4 lead.

The Phillies did not quit though as they hit 11 of their 16 hits off Houston relief pitchers, Fernando Nieve, Wesley Wright, and Dave Borkowski. The 11 hits included a home run by both Pat Burrell and Chase Utley, their 14th and 15th of the season respectively. Even Cole Hamels joined the hit party as he recorded 2 of their 5 hits off starter Chris Sampson, including a RBI single. Ryan Howard was the only Phillies starter not to get a hit. For a full listing of how they scored, click the jump.

Top 2nd - Geoff Jenkins 2-run home run, 3-2 Astros
Top 3rd - Chase Utley sac fly, 3-3
Top 4th - Cole Hamels RBI single, 5-4 Astros
Top 6th - Pat Burrell home run, 6-5 Astros
Top 6th - Carlos Ruiz RBI single, 6-6
Top 6th - Jimmy Rollins ground-out, 7-6 Phillies
Top 6th - Shane Victorino 2-run double, 9-6
Top 7th - Pedro Feliz RBI single, 10-6
Top 7th - Greg Dobbs pinch-hit 2-run triple, 12-6
Top 7th - Shane Victorino RBI single, 13-6
Top 7th - Chase Utley 2-run home run, 15-6

The Phillies now come home for a ten game homestand against an injury-plauged Colorado Rockies team, the first place Florida Marlins, and the Cincinnati Reds.

Jamie Moyer faces off against Jorge De La Rosa tonight.

Oh, Chollie!

Sunday, May 25, 2008 · 1 Comments

Normally, I try to stay away from ranting in this blog because I don't want it to sound too Negadelphian, but there is something I need to get off my chest.

Personally, I feel that Charlie Manuel and his cronies consistently steal wins or the possibility to win away from their team because of their blunders, extreme patience with pitchers, and their inability to substitute players properly. Davey Lopes is excused from this rant.

Before I get to the negatives, I will say that Manuel does do a good job of keeping the club house loose and the players seem to be happy to play for him. However, he seems like nothing more than a 'glorified' bench coach. Charlie Manuel, with a far better team, has only managed to get 3 more wins than Larry Bowa had. 3 more, that's it. Yes, he finally "aided" the Phillies to their first division title in 14 years, but the standings also included no NL East team winning at least 90 games.

Why am I writing this? Well after last nights ridiculous ending, I felt that I had no choice. Manuel's third base coach, Steve Smith (a man who has had a number of guys thrown out at the plate during his tenure), had Pedro Feliz tag up on a Shane Victorino on a fairly short fly ball, only to have him thrown out at the plate. Now, there are certain situations where you try to do that, but not when you have a slow runner combined with the fact Chase Utley was up next with the bases loaded. Yes, the Chase Utley, April's player of the month and a National League MVP candidate. That Chase Utley.

Why else was I upset? I was upset that Pat Burrell was removed from the lineup for T.J. Bohn again in a close game where Burrell's bat might be needed. Nope, Charlie wanted T.J. Bohn up after Ryan Howard if the game got to that point. Immediately after that move, Eric Bruntlett pinched hit for Geoff Jenkins, which lead him to play right field after he grounded out. So now, our outfield consisted of T.J. Bohn in left, Victorino in center, and Eric Bruntlett in right. By removing Burrell and Jenkins, our defense in the outfield actually got worse. Were you being serious Charlie? Why pinch run for Burrell when there were already 2 outs and you had Eric Bruntlett up next. There is no way that Bohn or Burrell would have scored from first on a Bruntlett hit. If Bruntlett did get on, Burrell would have been in scoring position regardless.

So now, So Taguchi, Pat Burrell, and Geoff Jenkins were all out of the game. Our starting outfielders and our 4th outfielder. Good work Charlie, good work. Now into the bottom of the ninth, Charlie exhausted his entire bench after pinch-hitting Greg Dobbs for the pitching spot and Carlos Ruiz pinch-ran for Chris Coste, another move that made absolutely no sense. With Feliz on second, a slow runner, and Chris Coste on first, Manuel chose to pinch-run for Coste. Why? Ruiz cannot run past Feliz on a base hit, so he can only go as far as the slow-footed Pedro Feliz runs. Why waste a bench guy? There was absolutely no need to pinch run for Coste when he was standing on first. And then we saw how slow Feliz is when he was thrown out at home tagging up. Good job Charlie. Good job.

At least the Phillies have their only starting pitcher going today (Thanks Pat). As far as I am concerned for the rest of the year, Brett Myers, Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, and Adam Eaton are nothing more than long relievers, though we can label Jamie Moyer as the occasional spot starter.

The Phillies are now 27-24 and have hit their new bump in the road, 5 games over .500. They've tried to go over that mark as few times this year, but have failed to do so, promptly losing consecutive games to make sure of it. They're 2 behind the Marlins and 1 behind the Braves for second place. The Phillies current expected win-loss record sits at 28-23.

Klecko's, Davis is the Most Interesting Position Battle this Offseason

Friday, May 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

Even though Dan Klecko has been in the NFL for 5 years, his experience at full back is enough to land him in rookie camp. There he is learning what it takes to be a full time NFL full back. He is also competing with 3rd year Jason Davis, a pure full back.

While Davis' advantages are his experience at the position, his lack of NFL experience is huge. After spending his rookie season on the IR, he was in the practice squad all year last year. Klecko has the experience part down. He has been a situational FB for New England and Indianapolis, winning 3 rings with both teams. His only problem is that he is converting from defensive tackle.

I was kind of sick of struggling at D-line, so I figured this would be a good transition,” Klecko said Thursday after practice. “I don’t have the luxury to take days off and not do stuff right now.”

Both Klecko and Davis are the frontrunners to replace Thomas Tapeh, the first-team fullback for the last two seasons. “Jason’s a great player. I’ve just got to come out, watch him and learn from him,” Klecko said. “From the jump, [we] have gotten along great, which is great because sometimes that causes tension. He’s a great guy. It’s going to be fun in camp between me and him.”
This should be an interesting outcome to who gets the job. After signing with the Eagles, it looks like Andy Reid favors Klecko. But if he isn't ready to go, Davis will be the guy to start. But Klecko seems confident.

It’s actually not as unnatural as I thought it was going to be. Every once in a while we’ll be doing something that doesn’t feel right yet. So far, everything has gone OK. I’ve got a long way to go, I know that, but everything is going OK so far.”

Pat Burrell to the Rescue!

After the Astros battled back in the 6th inning to tie the game at 5, Pat Burrell hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the 8th inning to give the Phillies the lead for good. They would later add another run on a Chase Utley RBI single.

Pat Burrell was given the night off because he is in the midst of a 3-27 slump and an overall slump existing through the month of May. His one at-bat proved heroic.

Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero (gave up tying run, but awarded to Kendrick), Chad Durbin, and Tom Gordon all pitched scoreless frames to get to closer Brad Lidge who needed only one pitch to get Lance Berkman to pop up for the final out.

Oh, and guess who might be back? Ryan Howard. Ryan Howard had another great peformance at the plate going 3-5 with a home run, a double, and drove in 2 RBIs. Howard seems in the zone and 2 of his 3 hits tonight (including his home run) were driven to opposite field. He's keeping his front shoulder and he moved a little closer to the plate. See what happens when you listen Ryan?

Another Phillie who's average is starting to climb is that of Pedro Feliz who went 2-4 tonight with an RBI. Also, after struggling mightily against the Nationals, Jimmy Rollins took the flight to Houston with gratification as he notched 2 hits, including a double.

In a game where things looked to be going smooth for Kyle Kendrick, he hit a wall after plunking Carlos Lee in the 6th. Two batters later, Ty Wiggington hit a double to make the game 5-4. Kendrick would be pulled after that hit, but J.C. Romero later allowed a RBI single with the infield drawn in to Geoff Blum.

Kendrick's final line: 5ip, 8 h, 5 r, 5 er, 1 bb, 2 k, 1 hbp
Tonight's win went to Chad Durbin.

On Deck: Adam Eaton against Brandon Backe, 8:05 pm.

In Kris Benson's first extended spring training start, he gave up 4 runs in 4 innings on 6 hits, while striking out 4. His walk number was unavailable. Benson only threw 56 pitches in his 4 innings of work, which isn't too bad for his first start. This information came from Comcast Sportsnet.

Richards: "I'm not ready for the C"

The entire Philadelphia fan base and the guys in the locker room think that Mike Richards is both ready and deserves to be captain. However, there is one guy who disagrees and that man is Mike Richards, himself. [Philly Daily News]

"I don't think I'm ready right now," he said. "I'm still young. I've been in the league 3 years and I don't think I'm ready right now."
If not Richards, who would it be? Personally, I think Richards should be the captain regardless because the likely candidates would be Kimmo Timonen or Daniel Briere, two players here for at least 5 more years. I have a hard time believing that they will be stripped of the "C" if one of those two become captain. I also have a hard time believing that the players would not vote Richards the captain.

Paul Holmgren, John Stevens, Derian Hatcher, and even likely former captain, Jason Smith, have endorsed Mike Richards as the next captain. Richards was voted MVP by the local media and he led all Flyers' forwards in postseason ice time. Richards is on the ice for even strength, the power play, and the penalty kill. He's the centerman against the opposing team's top line and he consistently leaves it all out on the ice.

If for some reason Mike Richards is not voted team captain, I'd expect the captain to be Kimmo Timonen. Timonen's return to the lineup during game 5 demonstrated great character and he was more and more of a vocal leader throughout the playoffs. However, whether Richards likes it or not, I think he will add the "C" to his media developed resume as the next Bobby Clarke.

Howard, Moyer Star in Phillies Win

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 · 0 Comments

After how this year has been going so far, no one expected tonight's stars to be Ryan Howard and Jamie Moyer. Both led the Phillies to a 12-2 win over the Nationals, bolstered by an 8-run 6th inning.

The seasoned Moyer pitched 6 shut out innings, striking out 3, walking 1, and giving up 7 hits. He got himself out of a couple jams in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings as his pitch count rose but he kept the runners from crossing the plate. Clay Condrey pitched 3 innings for his first save, a rare situational save in fact.

At the plate, the cold slugger in Howard woke up as he went 3-5 with 2 HRs and a double, driving in 4 runs. Howard got his average up to .195, still below the Mendoza line.

Howard wasn't the only Phillie to go deep as both Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz belted homers. Victorino also added a double and single as he went 3-5, driving in 2 runs as well as scoring 3 times. Jimmy Rollins went 2-6 with a double, run, and RBI.

Moyer has been shaky all season as his age looks like it finally caught up to him. It was nice seeing him go 6 innings. It was also nice seeing the offense support a quality start. This offense tends to be very streaky. They are dangerous when hot and a cancer when cold.

The Phillies are now a game and a half behind the Marlins and are tied with the Braves. They will enter the next series in Houston to face the Astros (27-21). The match ups are:

Kendrick (3-2) vs Oswalt (4-4)
Eaton (0-2) vs Backe (3-5)
Myers (2-5) vs Moehler (1-1)

Desean Jackson: The Next A.I. or Lindros?

Is DeSean Jackson the next Allen Iverson in Philadelphia? His father certain believes so.

DeSean has not had a quarterback since he played Pop Warner football. He didn't have a real quarterback at Long Beach Poly or at Cal," Bill Jackson said. "With Donovan McNabb . . . I think DeSean will be the next Iverson in Philadelphia."
We all know that DeSean has an ego, or chip on his shoulder, but he tried to make it very clear to the Philadelphia faithful that he will neither be a T.O, who threw his teammates under the bus, nor a Freddie Mitchell, who talked his way out of the league. [Philadelphia Daily News]

Jackson has said all the right things about the type of player he wants to be. He has the confidence that he wants to be a playmaker for the Eagles and wants the ball as much as he can to make such plays. During crucial times, he has voiced that he wants the coaching staff to know that he is the type player that wants the ball.

Jackson also makes a surprising remark for someone who from a big, close family (an image that was seen on draft day). Jackson did not goto USC because he wanted to be a little farther away from his family at Cal; he wanted independence; however, Cal coach Jeff Tedford felt that DeShawn's family were too involved in his life. Jackson's father has heard that Andy Reid has requested that Bill Jackson comes no where near the Eagles facility.
With outside opinions and outside advice always eating at DeSean, he was in a very tough spot,'' Tedford said yesterday, when asked about that discussion. "He's trying to be a team guy, trying to fit in and play his role, but dealing with outside information always eating at him, and not always positive. It ended up putting him in a very difficult position. He's had to deal with a lot of different people's opinions being shot at him. That's where I think he has grown, and will continue to grow, on being his own man, using his own common sense. Being part of the meetings and the offense, he knows better than the outsiders what is going on."
And this is why I ask: Is DeSean Jackson the next Eric Lindros? Will Bill Jackson become the next Carl Lindros? Only time will tell, but I have a feeling that the Eagles will not waste their time to set the record straight either with Jackson's family. Bill Jackson through the article said that Andy Reid should not be concerned. He'll rarely make his way to Philadelphia. As you can see, Jackson's father is rather vocal and though he wants to be a good parent, he might not be doing as good of a job of letting DeSean to develop into a man.

Dobbs Delivers for Phils in 9th

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 · 0 Comments

Cole Hamels was stellar in his outing as the Phillies shut out the Nationals 1-0. Hamels recorded the no decision as it took 9 innings to finally get a run on the board. That one run was enough to get the Phillies the win.

Greg Dobbs delivered with the heroics in the ninth as he drove in Eric Bruntlett with a one out single. Dobbs was later thrown out at the plate by Lastings Milledge off of Shane Victorino's 2 out base hit. It was okay because it was more than enough to win.

The real star was Hamels as he struck out 11 and gave up 4 hits and walking 2. The bullpen continued it's dominace tonight as well. Tom Gordon entered in the 8th and pitched a scoreless inning. Brad Lidge pitched a good ninth for the save, despite his scare. He struck out the first two batters and walked the next two but ended the game with a groundball to Chase Utley.

The Phillies ended their 3 game losing streak but the offense continued ot struggle. The squandered a lot of scoring chances again tonight. It seems like the same problems from last year are occuring in leaving too many runners on base. The Phillies improved 25-22, remaining 2 games out of first and in a three-way tie for 2nd place

Jamie Moyer (3-3, 4.39) will walk the hill tomorrow as he faces Matt Chico (0-5, 6.07)who is still seeking his first win.

No time to wait; Flyers expect to move fast!

The Flyers expect to begin their offseason rather quickly, regarding their restricted free agents: Jeff Carter, Randy Jones, and R.J. Umberger. In the upcoming week, Paul Holmgren and Peter Lukko will partake in a meeting discussing in depth what changed need to be made. [Philadelphia Inquirer]

First and foremost, the Flyers need to attempt to sign Jeff Carter, a player that could draw at least $5 million per season. Teams could over Group II offer sheets, along with Umberger, from other teams. If a team offers 4.6-5.89 million per year, the Flyers will receive 2 first round picks, a second round pick, and a third round pick. If teams offer more than 5.89 million, the Flyers would receive 4 first round picks as compensation. Anything under 4.6 million per year, the Flyers would likely match in a heartbeat. Jeff Carter turns 24 on January 1st.

Second, the Flyers should sign Randy Jones. Jones was one of the Flyers better defenseman in the playoffs. Jones will not command high level money, but if they can lock him up long-term now, it could be very valuable as he continues to develop into a top 4 defenseman. Jones turns 27 later this year, so he still has some youth on his side. He is also a RFA, so teams can attempt to sign him to an offer sheet, but no one will drastically over pay for him. He has taken a little while to develop.

Third, the Flyers should attempt to sign R.J. Umberger, who like Carter is a Group 2 free-agent. Umberger excelled against Montreal in the playoffs, but he's always been a gritty centerman, who can score with the right linemates. Umberger is more valuable on the penalty kill and playing against other teams bigger forwards. Umberger has been a very good defensive forward for the Flyers and the team needs to keep a guy like Umberger because they are a little weak defensively. Umberger also has very deceptive speed and does a decent job of finding the open man. He had 37 assists during the regular season. If the Flyers do sign Umberger and Carter, I'd expect Richards to move up to the top line to center Gagne and Briere, which would be an absolutely amazing first line. The Flyers are very deep at the forward position.

The team also needs to sign an enforcer, whether it be RFA Riley Cote or someone else.

If these three things happen, I could see the lines looking like this (if Gagne is healthy)
Gagne Richards Briere
Hartnell Carter Giroux
Upshall Umberger Lupul
Cote Downie Knuble

Knuble on the 4th line? Shocking, but that's just because of their depth. Knuble will still be on the PP units in front of the net. Now looking at the defenseman, we'd have this:

Timonen Coburn
Jones Hatcher (if he doesn't retire)
Parent Kukkonen

Parent's offseason is likely going to be the most important for the Flyers. I'd expect or hope Braydon Coburn would take Parent under his wing with his amazing offseason conditioning program. If Parent improves drastically he may become that 4th defenseman the Flyers are looking for.

There is a silver lining here," Luukko said. "Yes, we lost to Pittsburgh. But here was a young man [Parent] who got a chance to play very meaningful minutes and games. That will be tremendous experience for him going into training camp

Parent did very well in his three game opportunity during the playoffs. Parent was also the one who remained in the lineup over Jaroslav Modry.
We began looking today at the options we have," Luukko said. "Where do we go with our cap money, and what do we do with trades and re-signings, etc.? In many cases, it is combinations. When you have draft picks, cap room and players, you have options for trades and free agency signings and such. You can create options as you see fit if you are creative.

The Flyers have to attempt to work their magic this year to stay under the salary cap because they will have some relief next year when some larger contracts come off the payroll. If the Flyers do have the space after doing at least the first two things, they may look to sign a quick defenseman and accept the compensation they receive from Umberger.

What do you think the Flyers should do, feel free to comment.

100 Seasons* of Agony

The Flyers Conference finals defeat marked 100 seasons* in Philadelphia without a professional sports title. Why the asterik? Technically, only 98 championships have been rewarded during that span because of the 1994 MLB strike and the 2004-2005 NHL lockout. Sports Illustrated did a nice piece on the 100 heartbreaks since Maurice Cheeks slam dunk to the title. Video of our last Championship in Philadelphia after the jump. However, this is one thing I disagree with on this list. They mention Penn's basketball team. If we're discussing Philadelphia college basketball teams, Villanova won in 1985, unless they're not including Villanova as part of Philadelphia. They later include Villanova though in their loss to Old Dominion.

Jon Lester Throws a No-Hitter

Monday, May 19, 2008 · 0 Comments

Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox no-hit the Kansas City Royals tonight. I know that this is not Philadelphia sports, but it is historic and worthy of noting.
Lester through 130 pitches during his no-hitter while striking out 9 and only walking 2. Lester's no hitter since his teammate Clay Bucholz threw one last season.

The Phillies have not thrown a no-hitter since Kevin Millwood on April 27, 2003. If any Phillie is going throw one anytime soon, it'll likely be tomorrow's starter, Cole Hamels.

Phils Are Blanked By Nats

The Nationals beat the Phillies 4-0 Monday night. It was another long day for the Phillies offense as they failed to produce for another "quality start." The Phils have lost 3 straight now, falling to third place in the NL East. They are half a game behind the Mets and one and a half games behind the first place Marlins.

Brett Myers got the start and did well enough to keep the Phillies in the game but his offense did not show up. He gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, walking 3 and striking out 2. Madson came in for the 7th and 8th inning and gave up the fourth run.

Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, and Geoff Jenkins had 2 hits apiece and Carlos Ruiz added the last hit. Ryan Howard was back to his old self going 0-4 and striking out once. Jayson Werth pinch hit with two outs in the top of the ninth only to strike out on Joel Hanrahan's high and in 97 MPH fastball.

Tim Redding got the start for the Nationals and pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up 7 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Christian Guzman went 3-4 with a double and 3 runs scored. Lastings Milledge had 2 doubles as well for Washington.

Myers has been terrible all year in his return to the rotation. It isn't known if Myers is playing through an injury, is out of shape, or is just in a complete mental funk. His fastball has lost a lot of velocity, leading to a possible shoulder injury he is hiding. Putting him back in the bull pen won't help and taking him out of the rotation will leave the Phillies with out a 5th starter.

A Sunday to Forget by John Russo

Sunday, May 18, 2008 · 1 Comments

Here is my account of how I spent the Sunday of May 18:

I woke up at 7 o clock AM on the couch of my dad's friend's condo in Florida. My back is aching from the poor sleeping surface. Groggily, I shower and finish packing my suitcase. The flight my brother and I were taking was leaving at 9:30.

After being dropped off at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, wearing my Chase Utley jersey, I check in with out any problems other than the hassle with having my lap top checked at security.

After a quick flight, we get back to Atlantic City and drive in time to make it to the first pitch of the Phillies/Blue Jays game. It was drizzling a little bit the whole drive up but nothing seemed threatening. I was wrong.

We sat in section 307. After Kendrick's 1-2-3 inning and Ryan Howard's 2-run blast, the skies opened and down came the showers. As my brother and I got a Schmidter sandwich, we decided whether or not we wanted to stay or go across the street to the Wachovia Center. I check my phone for the weather and it seemed clear to just leave.

We get to the Center in time for face off and watch the Flyers' dismal first period filled with turnovers, soft goals, poor PK, and poor defense. I buy a Richards t-shirt and change into that to dress appropriately for the game. I sit in the main arena with about 500-600 other people watching as the Flyers fall apart in the 2nd period. Me and my brother get up and leave.

We go outside and hear cheering from CBP. We decide to walk back over to watch the rest of the Phillies game. After re-entering and finding seats behind the third base dugout, the second pitch thrown was a 3-run home run by Lyle Overbay to tie the game up for the Jays. We then watch as Rudy Seanez give up 3 more runs. The Phils bring it with in 6-4 but the clouds decided to hold the sun from popping out. It poured again as the game went into its second delay.

We walk to Tony Lukes and pick up cheese steaks and take them back to our new location behind the Phils dugout, 19 rows from the action to enjoy our subs there. We watch the ninth inning play out like this:

Chase Utley pops out and Howard does no better. With 2 outs, up comes Pat "The Bat" Burrell and he drives a bomb into the upper level in left field to bring the Phils within one. Unfortunately after Chris Coste's follow-up double, Eric Bruntlett fails to bring him in as he struck out on high cheese.

My day sucked and so did the Phanatic's. Christ, it was his birthday and his Phightins couldn't win one for him. Oh well. At least he had more fun than I did.

Happy Birthday Phillie Phanatic

Phils Lose Rain-Filled Game

After jumping out out a 3-0, in and out of rain delays, the Phillies lost 6-5 after surrending 6 unanswered runs at one point. The Blue Jays put up 3 spots in both the 5th and 6th innings and rode the bullpen (included ace Roy Halladay) the rest of the game.

Ryan Howard gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead before the first rain delay with a 2-run home run, his 10th, but the delay cost the Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick. Carlos Ruiz would later add an RBI-single, but the bullpen could not hold it. Chad Durbin pitched well for 3.2 innings until he allowed a 3-run home run to Lyle Overbay in the 5th. Rudy Seanez allowed 3 earned on 3 hits and 1 walk in the 6th. Seanez got the loss.

The offense continued to struggle with runners on base, leaving 11. Pat Burrell hit his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth. Chase Utley added an RBI-single. Ryan Howard went 2-4 with a walk and continues to heat up with the warmer weather.

The Season is Over

The Flyers were absolutely destroyed in game 5, losing decisively 6-0. 6 to fucking nothing. I don't even know what to say. Unprepared? Scared? Terrible on the road? You're about to be eliminated and the best effort they could show up with today is a 6-0 defeat. The defense was awfully terrible and the penalty kill continued to struggle/look absolutely pathetic on the road during the series. The Penguins had a coach that remained vocal throughout the series and continually remained vocal today. The Flyers had a coach who rarely moved his lips except for when he put a piece of gum in his mouth after every goal to fight his nervousness.

Okay, there's my rant. Now onto the positives. The Flyers brass will have all season to evaluate the team and to make a plan. Regardless of their bad play this series and losing 4-1 to the Penguins, you have to think fatigue set in and the Flyers just no longer had it. They looked completely outplayed through much of the series and much of the credit goes to Pittsburgh. There were positives, however. The Flyers are young enough and they're built to improve and dominate in the future. The team currently puts out 15 former first round picks and they have a nice mix of veterans and young kids. Their core of centermen in Richards, Carter, and Umberger are all 26 and under, though both Carter and Umberger are restricted free agents. The Flyers also have a number of young defensemen to move forward with Kimmo Timonen in Braydon Coburn, Randy Jones, and Ryan Parent. Those four defensemen will be part of the Flyers top-2 pairings for years to come. And oh yeah, Simon Gagne returns next year. The Flyers also have wingers Claude Giroux (Quebec league MVP) and JVR waiting in the wings.

The Flyers will compete next year, but they need to find a way to be more consistent throughout the year. Winning 7 straight and then losing 4 straight is not good hockey even if it turns out to be a positive record in the end. It makes luck or the way the puck bounces a bigger factor in their season. Congratulations to the Flyers even if they finally met their match. Throw out the conspiracies, they were not real. The Flyers were outplayed and it had nothing to do with the Flyers wanting to promote Sidney Crosby. We may hate him here in Philadelphia, but he is still a phenomenal talent. The Flyers defeated the streaking Capitals with Ovechkin and they beat the last Canadian team standing in Montreal. Clap your hands for your team. I know the loss hurts, but there is a lot to be proud about. Next year is less than five months away.

Let's Go Flyers!

No Offense but...Rod Barajas?

Nothing is worse than when a waste of money signing for the Phillies gets released when the season is over and comes back to get revenge...or lucky. Last night, Rod Barajas, now of the Toronto Blue Jays hit a grand slam and solo home run to help the Jays beat the Phillies 6-3.

Adam Eaton's bad second inning cost him a chance to win and outside of that inning he did not pitch overly poorly as he threw 5 innings, giving up 4 earned on 8 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3. The bullpen did well until the 9th inning when Tom Gordon gave up 2 earned on 1 home run (Barajas) and 4 hits.

The offense only had 6 hits last night as Jimmy Rollins had 3 of them. A.J. Burnett did a good job of shutting down the Phillies. Rollins upped his average to .329 on the season, while knocking in 2. He continues to hit well since returning to the team.

Today, we have Kyle Kendrick going against Shawn Marcum, another pitcher who has pitched very well for the Jays this year. The game is at 1:35 on CW17.

Timonen Seems Hopeful

Update: Kimmo Timonen will play according to NBC.

Kimmo Timonen skated solo yesterday at practice and remains hopeful that he will be able to play in Game 5 tomorrow. [Daily News]

Kimmo is one of the best puck-moving defensemen in the league," Flyers goalie Martin Biron said yesterday. "He's good, and he's even better on the ice when you don't notice him, because he does the little things right all the time. He makes guys think twice. It's no secret he's an All Star. There's fans around the league that have probably never noticed him, but when you play against him or you play with him, that's when you appreciate his full value. I think that our defensive corps really looks at the way he plays, to be able to settle the game, and settle our emotions or anything out there."
Timonen's addition to the lineup; however, may not mean the removal of Ryan "Bernie" Parent. Parent played in games 3 and 4 and he has played extremely well and better than his counterpats, Lasse Kukkonen and Jaroslav Modry. Parent has been able to make the simple plays as well as making the passes to move the puck up the ice. Parent played well alongside of Jason Smith and allowed Smith to lay some hits because Parent is such a stay at home defender. Parent is your standard defensive-defenseman, which is what they need right now.

The Flyers have to try and maintain the aggressive mentality that they had through the first two periods of game 4. They have to be extremely aggressive on their forecheck early and they have to put one in the net early to take the Pittsburgh crowd out of it.

Jayson Werth Dominates!

Friday, May 16, 2008 · 0 Comments

Jayson Werth tied the Phillies single-game record for most rbi's with 8 tonight, while also hitting three home runs (3-run, grand slam, and solo) in his first three at-bats. Werth got another at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, but he popped out. Including Werth, the top of the lineup batted 9-20 with 10 R and 10 RBI. Ryan Howard was able to extend his hitting streak to 8 games with an rbi-single, despite striking out twice and walking once.

Jamie Moyer pitched well for the Phillies surrendering 3 earned on 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5 in 6 2/3 innings. Moyer had great control through tonight's mist and was able to hit his spots. Chad Durbin pitched in relief and continued his great performances out of the bullpen allowing no runs or hits in 1 1/3 innings. Clay Condrey pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game. Jamie Moyer improved to 3-3 on the year.

Interleague Play/Pitching Performances

Memorial Day is near as interleague play starts off this weekend for the Phils. They will be visited by the Toronto Blue Jays. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Phillies are by far the worst team in the National League East during interleague play. Over the past 11 years, the Phillies are 86-98 (.467). Every other National League East team is over .500 during the same time period.

As of today, the Phillies have the strongest strength of interleague schedule just to make matters worse. Their opponents are the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Angels, A's, and Rangers, which are all around .500 or above. It is not all bad news though. Last year, the Phillies were 8-7 in interleague play, so maybe they're turning the corner. Let's hope so.

To win against the American League, the Phillies are going to need exceptional starting pitching. Currently, the Phillies starting rotation ranks pretty low in the majors with regards to their 4.69 ERA (22nd), 12 wins (22nd), 276 hits allowed (29th), 164 Ks (15th), .281 opponents batting average (24th), .811 Opponents' OPS (29th), 36 HRs allowed (29th), 1.44 WHIP (20th), and 1.93 K/BB ratio (15th). As you can tell, the starting rotation outside of Cole Hamels has been pretty poor thus far. The only stat the Phillies rank highly in is starter's losses, which are bailed out by the offenses late comebacks or just poor run support. The Phillies felt that the addition of Brett Myers to the rotation would be enough, but it is obvious that that assumption has been incorrect thus far.

On the other hand, the Phillies' bullpen is the best in baseball, pretty substantially as well. Their 2.63 ERA leads the majors. The Phillies bullpen also ranks high in other categories. 11 wins (2nd), 11 saves (T11th), 106 hits (6th), .226 Opponents Batting Average (3rd), .632 Opponent's OPS (3rd), and 1.32 WHIP (10th). The bullpen does have some areas where they need to improve immensely because they are currently living and dying and their opponents low "batting average of balls put in play." The pen walks too many guys and they don't strike out enough hitters to counteract the walks. Their 1.49 K/BB (23rd) and 6.47 K/9 ratio (23rd) are both near the bottom of the league. If the bullpen wants to maintain their success, they need to work on cutting down their walks. Another rather astonishing stat is that their bullpen has allowed 14 stolen bases (3 caught stealing) in only 126.2 innings. The starters have also allowed 14 stolen bases (12 caught stealing) in 249.1 innings. The bullpen guys need to do a better job at holding runners.

Here's to hoping the offensive numbers continue to increase and that the Phillies finish over .500 during interleague play for the second straight year.

Coburn and Timonen Could Play in Game 5

Good, no great news Flyers fans. Apparently not only Braydon Coburn may return to the lineup on Sunday, but there is also the possibility of Kimmo Timonen returning. [Comcast Sportsnet]

"If I feel (Friday) that I'm good to go for Sunday, then I'm good for Sunday," Timonen said after Thursday's win. "There is nothing to prevent me from playing. I may have numbness in my toes, but if I can deal with that then I can play.

"We took another ultrasound, and based on that the doctor said I have a green light to give it a try. The doctor feels that there is no chance the clot is going to get loose or break up or anything like that. It's a great sign. A week ago they were afraid it was going to get bigger and cut loose."

Timonen's return would be extremely huge as he is considered the Flyers' best defenseman and by some even their best overall player. Timonen's return would be an extreme boost to the character of the team as well as the power-play and penalty kill units.
Coburn had hoped to play in game 4 after practicing Wednesday, but the swelling did not subside enough in his left eye. Now, the Flyers have 2 nights off before game 5, which could help increase the chances of Coburn and Timonen's returns to the lineup. Of course, the Flyers should put neither player at any risk that could effect their future, which I think was a big reason why Coburn did not play tonight.

Flyers Win Game 4

Thursday, May 15, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well, the Flyers sent their fans home happy at least for tonight. The Flyers beat the Penguins 4-2 tonight to extend the 7 series to at least a game 5. The Flyers came out roaring in the first period with a great backcheck and smooth breakouts. They scored 3 goals from Joffrey Lupul, Daniel Briere (PP), and Jeff Carter (PP).

The Flyers maintained the pressure through the second period as well as they continued to play physical and just skate circles around the penguins, but the game remained 3-0 heading into the third. However, the Flyers came out a little flat/conservative with the big lead and their conservative play has lead to problems in the past. Two Jordan Staal goals tied it up late in the third, but a Joffrey Lupul empty netter ended the scare and ensured a game 5.

The atmoshphere at the Wachovia Center was absolutely electric. In the final period, you would have thought that we were eliminating the Penguins tonight with the fans reactions late in the third. Anything can still happen. The Flyers won 4 straight against Montrael and they can win 4 straight here. All it takes is 1 more 1in at home and 2 in Pittsburgh. Definitely no easy task. Game 5 is Sunday on NBC @ 3. Let's Go Flyers!

King Cole

Cole Hamels absolutely dominated the Braves tonight while the offense did their home run trots around the bases to shut out the Braves 5-0. Hamels threw a 4-hit, complete game, shut-out while striking out 6 Braves.

The offense, including Hamels 2-4 effort, was boosted by solo home runs from Pedro Feliz, Ryan Howard, and a 2-run home run by Shane Victorino. Pedro Feliz also added an RBI single. Howard extended his hitting streak to 7 games and it seems like his bat is finally to starting to truly come around. Howard's homer tonight was his second in as many days as well. It is the first time he has homered in consecutive games all year.

The highlight of the game however was a 9th inning double play turned by Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.

My Apologies

I apologize. I've been away from the computer since last night and I was unable to recap the Phillies game. However, here are some notes from today in the Philadelphia sports world:

  • Brett Myers needs to find his fastball as much as the Flyers need to find Vinnie Prospal and Danny Briere.
  • Ryan Howard is beginning to heat up a little and hopefully rock bottom has been hit and there is now only a way to go up.
  • Flyers-Penguins may become the possible Winter Classic game in 2009 after the events possibilites at Yankee stadium are fading.
  • Go Flyers. Go Flyers. Go Flyers.

Stay Classy Philadelphia

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 · 4 Comments

After last night's game, I just did not have the motivation to write a recap. My recap would have consisted of one word. "Outplayed" The Flyers were completely outplayed and a lot of the physical unforced errors that Flyers committed, were actually forced mentally by the game plan of the Penguins. The Penguins stars have shined and our top line has disappeared.

What can you do? Whether or not you feel that game 4 is the end, cheer your heart out. The Flyers are our team and they will continue to be our team. The team's accomplishments this year were amazing and the fans were well rewarded for sticking with the team through their miserable 2007 campaign. Don't boo this team tomorrow. Stand on your feet for the entire game and maybe they'll surprise you. We've seen all year that the team is incredibly streaky. One win could be a huge boost of confidence and anything can happen. It doesn't matter when you win the four games in a best of 7 series, but as long as you win 4, you move on.

If we do lose tomorrow, continue to cheer. The Flyers are currently built to be successful again for years to come. We all thought the Flyers would rebound and make the playoffs this year, but not many of us felt that they'd win to series to clinch a birth in the conference finals.

The window isn't closing. We're just beginning to open it wider and wider.

Phillies win 5-4

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 · 0 Comments

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, the Phillies battled back throughout the game to take a 5-3 lead. Jayson Werth went 3-4 and had 4 RBIs. After an ugly first at-bat, Ryan Howard bounced back and had 2 hits in his next 3 at-bats and also added an RBI.

Kyle Kendrick's shaky first inning was followed by a bases loaded scare in the second inning, but from then on he continued to pitch scoreless innings until he left after the 6th. J.C. Romero and Tom Gordon both pitched scoreless innings respectively. Phillies closer, Brad Lidge felt his first scare of the season as he gave up his first earned run, but he did get to save for the Phillies 5-4 win.

Note: The Phillies game sold out even while the Flyers played Game 3 across the street. Howard extended his season-long hitting streak to five games. Victorino and Burrell had two hits each.

Left-Handers, Left-Handers, and Left-Handers, Oh My!

The Phillies are slated to face three straight left-handed starters for the Atlanta Braves.

Tonight: Jo-Jo Reyes against Kyle Kendrick
Tomorrow: Tom Glavine against Brett Myers
Thursday: Chuck James against Cole Hamels
As a team, the Phillies are currently hitting .235 against left-handed pitching. Reyes is coming off a start where he left early due to a blister on the index finger of his pitching hand. Also, their are many negative trends going into this series and one or more will have to reverse. The Braves are awfully terrible on the road this season (5-14) and Tom Glavine is still winless during his second tour with the Braves. For the Phillies, their blunders against left-handed pitching will have improve if they want any chance of winning this series and remaining close to the Mets and Marlins. Will all this left-handed pitching finally help Ryan Howard break him out or pound him deeper into the mud he's stuck in? Only time will tell. It should be noted that the Phillies are 8-6 against left-handed starters, but their on the field production needs to improve.

Braydon Coburn is Out for Game 3

Braydon Coburn's eye is still swollen shut and he will miss Game 3 against Pittsburgh. [ESPN]

"I feel fine," the 23-year-old said. "My eye is swollen shut, so it makes it a little hard to do things. Besides that, I feel all right. I think as soon as my eye opens up, we'll re-evaluate what's going on.

He later mentioned that as soon as his eye opens up, he will return to playing. Once Coburn is able to return, he will wear a shield to protect the injury. Ryan Parent will replace Coburn in the lineup. Parent will likely begin the game paired with captain Jason Smith.

The Flyers will have to bring their best game tonight and so will the fans. I'd expect some high energy early on, including big hits on Pittsburgh's stars, especially to seek revenge on Malkin's cheap hit on Danny Briere. I am predicting that the Flyers sneak away with a 3-2 win today. I really expect the crowd to play a huge factor for the Flyers. I also expect the Flyers to even the series. Call me a homer, but it is just a gut feeling. I don't see quit in this team.

Andy Talks about the Wide Receivers

Monday, May 12, 2008 · 0 Comments

[700 level]

Andy Reid provided similar commentary to what he's always said about the wide receivers. He likes what he has, a healthy LJ Smith will provide a spark, etc. He said they went after Randy Moss because you can add a player like that, you might as well try.

Personally, I did not think the WR corps was all that bad. The passing game put up great numbers before McNabb's injury and 2006. Once McNabb started to inch closer to 100%, his passing numbers started to improve. In games 9-16 last year, McNabb completed 64% of his passes for 10 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions, for a QB rating of 95.3. The Red Zone problem were a multiple of things and not just the passing game. At times the play-calling was horrendous to go with bad plays by the line. Obviously the entire offense had some work to do inside the red zone. Even Brian Westbrook struggled inside the red zone, where he only averaged 2.4 yards and scored only 5 touchdowns.

On another note, Kevin Curtis who caught 77 passes for 1110 yards, was one of only two Eagles receivers since Irving Fryar in 1997 to go over 1000 yards. You know who the other one was.

Reggie Brown or L.J. Smith truly have to have that breakout year that we've been looking for, right?

NFL Draft Picks: S Quintin Demps

Pick #117: Quintin Demps - S - UTEP

Demps' 17 interceptions were the most among active collegiate players in 2007. He also became only the 7th player in NCAA history to total more than 400 yards in interception return yards. Demps also averages 13.3 yards per punt return last season. Both the addition of DeSean Jackson and Quintin Demps should vastly improve the return game.

Positives: Has a very good timed speed, showing the change of direction to get the ball in time playing in space. Has natural hands and ball skills, timing his leaps and elevating well to consistently get to the ball at its high point. His loose hips allow him to close on the ball in a hurry vs. plays in front of him. He has good eyes and above average route awareness, making quick reads to get a jump on the ball. He plays with better urgency attacking the ball than the man. Can match up and cover tight ends, running backs, and wide receivers when working underneath.

Negatives: His frame is built more like a cornerback - lean with adequate playing strength. He lacks the ideal recovery ability and doesn't show a second gear to recover when beaten. He is better as a downhill player and does not show great range to chase down ballcarriers in long pursuit. Tends to do what is asked, but nothing more. Sometimes he needs to be pushed. Attacks ball carriers at their feet instead of getting in good position to make a wrap tackle. Do not expect him to move to corner because he lacks the speed to cover the quicker wide receivers. While playing some corner in 2007, teams averaged 23 yards per completion on Demps. He will never be a quality every down starter because of his lack of size to be a free safety.

Pick Grade: B-

Quintin Demps could become to be a very valuable special teams player, but he'll really need to bulk up if he wants to help the Eagles defensively at the safety position. Demps does have great ballhawking skills, but I would not expect him to be more than a good Special Teams contributor for the next few years. He is not Brian Dawkins future replacement.

Broken Down by Innings

With baseball's loveable/hateable 162 game schedule, it can perfectly be broken into 9 innings where each inning marks an 18 game stretch. During the Phillies "first-inning" of the season, they finished with a 8-10 record and they were 3 games out of first place.

The "second-inning" proved much better as the Phillies notched a 12-6 record and moved to within 1 game of first place and even held the top spot in the division for a few games. During that stretch Chase Utley, Pat Burrell, and Jayson Werth were extremely hot as they had some nice power numbers. Ryan Howard continued to slump and so did the starting pitching near the end. They've also played most of those two innings without Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins in the lineup. The second inning started when Jimmy Rollins went on the DL and lasted until he came off this past friday. Interesting, but Eric Bruntlett did well in Rollins absence.

The Phillies have started their third inning of the season with a series loss to the San Francisco Giants. The good news is that Jimmy Rollins is finally back in the lineup for good and should provide a much needed spark for Ryan Howard. With Rollins and Victorino back at the top, Howard will likely have more men on base when it is his turn to hit. Teams will not be able to shift as much because Rollins and Victorino's speed will keep the opposing defense honest.

Currently, the Phillies are 10-8 at home and 11-10 on the road. The Phillies will face Atlanta and Toronto at home this week and the pitching match-ups seem a little favorable to the Phillies, so we'll see what happens. If the Phils do not go 4-2 during this stretch, I'd consider it a failed homestand. It is very important for the Phillies to start winning more games at home, especially against the Braves (4-13 on the road) and Toronto (7-12 on the road).

The Phillies bullpen continues to be one of the best in baseball even with being somewhat overused. However, J.C. Romero has allowed home runs in 2 of his last 3 appearances. Both home runs gave the lead to the San Francisco Giants. Tom Gordon has pitched considerably better since the first week and Brad Lidge continues to be absolutely dominant. The Phillies however need better production from Jamie Moyer, Brett Myers, and Adam Eaton. The entire rotation needs to cut down on their base runners allowed per inning.

Offensively, the Phillies truly need to get more production out of Ryan Howard and the 6-8 hitters. Pedro Feliz has provided some pop, but Geoff Jenkins has become a strike-out machine with 26 compared to 6 walks. Ryan Howard currently has more strike-out than hits, RBI's, and home runs combined. Gregg Dobbs has been hitting considerably well again after starting slow, and I'd like him to get some of Jenkins platoon numbers in right field.

Claude Giroux: Super Star

Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers has been named the QMJHL playoff MVP. Giroux had 17 goals and 34 assists, totaling 51 points in just 19 games. Giroux's Gatineau Olympiques won their record-setting, 7th President's Cup trophy.

The most valuable player award was handed out to superstar forward Claude Giroux by Raymond Bolduc, the QMJHL Director of Hockey Operations. He collected seventeen goals and thirty-four helpers during the Olympiques’ magic run. Moreover, Giroux recorded at least one point in ten straight playoff games, a QMJHL record.

Gatineau will travel to Kitchener to represent the QMJHL at the Memorial Cup, which is held from May 16 to 25. I cannot expect Giroux to not be with the Phantoms or the Flyers next season. He has incredibily too much talent. Giroux was selected 22nd overall in the 2006 NHL draft.

Eagles Draft Pick: G Mike McGlynn

Pick #109, Mike McGlynn - OG/OT - Pittsburgh

The Eagles did not draft Jeff Otah, but they did draft Pittsburgh's other offensive tackle in Mike McGlynn. McGlynn was a 4 year starter at Pittsburgh and he had 100 knock-downs/key blocks last year, including 17 resulting in touchdowns while making 13 more blocks down field. McGlynn was a versatile offensive lineman who can play both right tackle and right guard. He was graded 90% or better for blocking consistency in four consecutive games in 2007. Better than Jeff Otah.

Positives: Demonstrates excellent athletic ability, displaying good initial explosion off the line. He is very nimble or a lineman and while he had just adequate timed speed, he gets out on traps and pulls in a hurry, maintaining balance throughout his stride. Also, McGlynn shows potential at becoming a center. He has an ability to retain plays and know all of the position assignments up front, he could be a natural calling blocking assignments at center.

Negatives: Needs to add more muscle tone to his midsection, but has the natural playing strength to dominate, especially when blocking in-line. Has adequate initial quickness getting off the line of scrimmage, but compensates with tremendous hand quickness to lock on, steer out and control his man. He needs to continue to improve his hand punch. He needs to show better consistency opening his hips to stay on blocks longer.

Draft Grade: B+

Flyers Fall Again

The Flyers put together a much better effort in Game 2, but they still lost to the Penguins 4-2. Maxime Talbot scored midway through the third period and Jordan Stall added a late empty netter for the decisive goals.

Bad luck seems to be on the Flyers side currently as Braydon Coburn was struck in the face with a puck two minutes into the game. He was unable to return and it is unknown if he'll be able to play in Game 3. His left eye is swollen shut right now.

Already without Kimmo Timonen, the injury played a toll on the Flyers in the third period as their blue line pairings were incredibily fatigued and the Flyers played much of the game in the neutral zone or their end. At one point, the Flyers had only one scoring chance in 16 minutes.

The game's scoring started on a Pittsburgh power play when Sidney Crosby's shot deflected in off Lasse Kukkonen's skate. Early in the second period, the Flyers evened the score when Jeff Carter planted a snap shot in the back of the net, also on the power play. The special teams scoring continued as Marian Hossa punched in a Marty Biron rebound to give the Penguins a 2-1 edge, but Mike Richards intercepted a Evgeni Malkin pass with less than a minute left and beat Fluery high for his second short-handed goal of the year.

During the Flyers 3 power play opportunities, they only managed two shots on net. There is no way you can expect to win a game when their minimal power play chances are not working. In comparison, the Penguins had 11 shots on 6 opportunities.

Game Notes: R.J. Umberger's 6 game point streak came to an end. Derian Hatcher played a game high 28:31 seconds.

First Star: Sidney Crosby
Second Star: Maxime Talbot
Third Star: Mike Richards

Not sure why Sergei Gonchar (3 assists) do not get any consideration.

Romero Fails to Hold Lead as Phillies Lose

Sunday, May 11, 2008 · 0 Comments

Giants beat Phillies 4-3

Adam Eaton was rescued in the sixth by Chad Durbin. Durbin entered the game with runners on second and third with no outs. He forced a line drive double play and recorded a strike out to get out of the inning with the Phillies still on top 3-2.

That all changed in the eighth when JC Romero gave up two runs, and the game, to the Giants.

Jimmy Rollins went hitless for the Phillies in five at-bats. Ryan Howard recorded a rare triple, his first of the year. The normal Howard also struck out twice.

The Phillies offense was absent the last two games as they only recorded six hits after a four-hit game yesterday.

Notable Phils:
Eaton - 5IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 4K, 5BB
Rollins - 0-5
Howard - 1-4, 1R, 1RBI, 3B, 2 SO

Poor Effort By Moyer Leads to Phillies Loss

Saturday, May 10, 2008 · 0 Comments

The Giants beat the Phillies 8-2.

The Phillies got off to a good start as Ryan Howard homered for the 7th time this year in the second inning. But that lead quickly diminished as Jaimie Moyer got rocked in his start. Moyer gave up two runs in the 2nd and then gave up three in the third. He gave up six runs total.

Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn each homered for the Giants.

Tim Lincecum pitched a stellar game versus Philadelphia, who only managed 4 hits. Both of Lincecum's runs were given up by solo homers by Howard and Chris Coste.

Notable Phils:
Howard: 1-4 with 1 run, 1 RBI, HR
Coste: 1-3 with 1 run, 1 RBI, HR
Madson: 1 IP; 2 K

Rollins Sparks Phils in Return

The Phillies beat the Giants 7-4.

After Cole Hamels gave up three runs in the fourth inning and the Phils went down 4-1, many gave up and turned off the TV (I won't mention any names). It seemed the Phillies were going to play down to a weak opponent again.

That was not the case. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-out, two-run homer to bring the Philies within 4-3. The Phillies tied the game up in the sixth off an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Carlos Ruiz.

Then in the eighth, the Phillies scored off of Rollins' and Gregg Dobb's RBI doubles, giving them 3 runs. Brad Lidge pitched another scoreless ninth, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Notable Phils:

Rollins - 3-5 with 1 run, 3 RBI's, double, HR
Hamels (4-3) - 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Lidge (S, 9) - 1 IP, 1 H, 3K

Flyers lose 4-2, down 1-0 in the Series

Friday, May 9, 2008 · 0 Comments

Too Many Turnovers!

The Flyers brought their 'D' game to Pittsburgh tonight as they coughed the puck up often, mostly unforced, as the Penguins took advantage of the many turnovers to put four of them in the net. If this team wants any chance to bounce back in game 2, they really needs to handle the puck better.

Another adjustment that needs to be made is that Randy Jones needs to return to the second PP line and the Flyers need to move Coburn to the top PP line. Coburn's slapshot off the one-timer is needed on that top line specifically with Mike Knuble screening Fluery in front. The powerplay had some good chances on their first opportunity, but looked absolutely clueless the rest of the way, including that costly turnover on Malkin's 15-foot, cherry-picking, slap shot goal. (Sorry, I just had to say it.)

As expected, things started to heat up late in the game and it may carry over into game 2. I'd expect Stevens to shuffle the defensive pairings a little, at least I'd hope so. The Flyers will need to come out strong and pepper Fluery with plenty of shots, something they did to start this game, but their attack faded until late in the third period. We'll see what happens, don't count us out yet. Game 2 is Sunday @ 7:30, but sadly on Versus. Their announcers are intolerable.
