Flyers Fall Again

Monday, May 12, 2008 ·

The Flyers put together a much better effort in Game 2, but they still lost to the Penguins 4-2. Maxime Talbot scored midway through the third period and Jordan Stall added a late empty netter for the decisive goals.

Bad luck seems to be on the Flyers side currently as Braydon Coburn was struck in the face with a puck two minutes into the game. He was unable to return and it is unknown if he'll be able to play in Game 3. His left eye is swollen shut right now.

Already without Kimmo Timonen, the injury played a toll on the Flyers in the third period as their blue line pairings were incredibily fatigued and the Flyers played much of the game in the neutral zone or their end. At one point, the Flyers had only one scoring chance in 16 minutes.

The game's scoring started on a Pittsburgh power play when Sidney Crosby's shot deflected in off Lasse Kukkonen's skate. Early in the second period, the Flyers evened the score when Jeff Carter planted a snap shot in the back of the net, also on the power play. The special teams scoring continued as Marian Hossa punched in a Marty Biron rebound to give the Penguins a 2-1 edge, but Mike Richards intercepted a Evgeni Malkin pass with less than a minute left and beat Fluery high for his second short-handed goal of the year.

During the Flyers 3 power play opportunities, they only managed two shots on net. There is no way you can expect to win a game when their minimal power play chances are not working. In comparison, the Penguins had 11 shots on 6 opportunities.

Game Notes: R.J. Umberger's 6 game point streak came to an end. Derian Hatcher played a game high 28:31 seconds.

First Star: Sidney Crosby
Second Star: Maxime Talbot
Third Star: Mike Richards

Not sure why Sergei Gonchar (3 assists) do not get any consideration.
