Philadelphia Sports Update

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 · 0 Comments

Sorry, I have been really busy with work lately.

Philadelphia Flyers
- The Flyers have rebounded from a 6 game unbeaten streak (2 points total) to win 5 of their next 6.
- Simon Gagne will likely return to the lineup tomorrow against the New York Rangers, along with Sami Kapanen, Scottie Upshall, and Jason Smith.
- Antero Niittymaki has gone 3-0 in his last 3 starts with a GAA of 1.00 and a save percentage of .975. He has been rewarded with another start against the Rangers.
- Joffrey Lupul will miss significant time with a mild concussion and a spinal-cord injury.
- The Flyers top Forsberg's list if he feels good enough to make a return to the NHL. -- Not sure if it worth ruining the future by trading away someone to free up cap space. Unless that somebody is Derian Hatcher.

Philadelphia 76ers
- The Sixers have lost 4 straight game to fall to seven games under .500. -- Granted 3 of those games were against the West.
- They play tonight in Toronto.
- I expect trade rumors to pick up again regarding Andre Miller because there is no point in keeping him if this team cannot squeeze into the playoffs.

Philadelphia Eagles
- Running back, Brian Westbrook, has been named to the NFL All-Pro team. He, a first teamer, is the only Eagle to make either the first or second team.
- McNabb has asked for help and can you blame him? Brian Westbrook should be right behind him. Though I think Kevin Curtis really came along during the end of the season, they need a play-maker and down-field threat. McNabb also needs to help himself and start worrying about improving his accuracy and release.
- GM (with no final say) Tom Heckert is interviewing for the GM job in Atlanta.
- The Eagles have begun their Season Rewind Section: Week 1 vs. GB

Philadelphia Phillies
- Jayson Werth was signed to a 1 year, $1.7 million contract.
- Other than that, the Phillies have been really quiet lately.
- Ryan Howard will be on the cover of "MLB 08 The Show"

City 6 Updates
- Villanova Wildcats - 11-2 (1-1) in the Big East. Next Game: Saturday @ Cincy
- Rumor has it that top prospect, Tyreke Evans will commit to Nova.
- Temple Owls - 6-6 (0-0) in the A10. Next Game: Tonight vs. Duke
- La Salle Explorers - 4-9 (0-1) in the A10. Next Game: Saturday @ St. Bonaventure
- St. Joes - 7-4 (0-0) in the A10. Next Game: @ UMASS
- Drexel - 8-7 (1-2) in the Colonial. Next Game: Tonight @ Northeastern
- Penn - 5-9 (0-0) in the Ivy League. Next Game: Tuesday vs. La Salle

City 6 Round-Up

Gonzaga 70, St. Joseph's 65

In front of a standing-room-only crowd, St. Joes forced overtime against 19th ranked Gonzaga, but could not pull of the upset. The Hawks trailed by seventeen early and led by six late, but finally lost in overtime 70-65. They shot 1 for 7 in extra time.

"I never thought we had the game in our grasp," Hawks coach Phil Martelli said of the six-point edge. "On offense, we were not very good. I thought we were good when we were able to run, but even some of the run-outs were broken plays and not efficient enough for as much time as we spend running the floor."
St. Joseph's falls to 3-2 on the season. They host Penn State tomorrow.

Temple 90, Ohio 88
Coming out of the final huddle, his team down by a point with 7.6 seconds left at the Liacouras Center, Temple senior Chris Clark passed along a tip to teammate Mark Tyndale: that he would knock down the shot if he got a pass.

"I didn't hear him," Tyndale deadpanned at Temple's postgame news conference.

But after Tyndale took the ball straight up the court and quickly got double-teamed, he saw Clark open on the left wing - with nobody within 12 feet of him. As promised, Clark knocked it down, hitting an open three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left that gave the Owls (3-4) a 90-88 thriller over Ohio University (2-2) in their home opener and ending a string of early-season heartbreaks.

Temple plays Towson next Thursday.

George Mason 85, Drexel 38

Drexel shot 15 of 50 (30 percent) from the floor to watch George Mason set a school record for margin of victory over a CAA team.

Drexel hosts Creighton tomorrow.

Villanova was screwed. The Wildcats fell to the NC State Wolfpack 69-68 after the Old Spice Classic officials called a complete phantom foul on a 3 point attempt. Villanova played terrible, outside of freshman standout Corey Fisher, and still almost won.

Drexel took a share of the Philly Hoop Group Classic as they knocked off Loyala 54-52 to win the Liberty Bracket. They improved to 5-1 on the season. Seton Hall beat Virginia to win the Independence bracket.

A small introduction...

We Hate to Lose began in October 2007. The initial purpose of the website was to provide news updates and commentary on all four major sports teams in Philadelphia. Because of time-constraints, in April of 2009, I decided to post only on my first-love, the Philadelphia Phillies.

My name is Justin Evans and I hope you enjoy the site.
