Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, JR. has said that the Phillies have some interest in Japanese right-hander Junichi Tazawa. The 22-year old top prospect is not on a Japanese major league roster because he went undrafted after announcing his plans to play in the United States.
"We know of him," Ruben Amaro Jr. said yesterday before departing the general managers meetings. "We've seen him, but we haven't made an offer." [Philadelphia Inquirer]
If the Phillies plan to make an offer for Tazawa, they will not need to compensate anyone in Japan like when the Red Sox had to bid on the rights to negotiate for Dice-K. The Braves feel that Tazawa could be a major league starter. You can decide by watching video of Tazawa after the jump.
In other news, the Phillies announced that they will be negotiating shortly with left-handers Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre. It seems like the entire Phillies fan base wants to see Jamie come back and he'll be relatively inexpensive. If he does return, I'd expect him to move to the 5th spot in the rotation.
Scott Eyre did well for us as a left-handed middle reliever and in his short time here, he talked about liking to pitch in Philly. I feel that both moves would be good moves and they should both be pretty inexpensive in terms of market standards.
However, the Phillies seem to be in no rush to negotiate with left fielder Pat Burrell. On one hand, it is sad because I'd love for him to stay a Phillie forever, but if I have to chose between Pat Burrell and using the free money toward Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard, I choose the latter.
Just a reminder, Tazawa highlights after the jump.
