Flyers Win, Briere Injured

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 ·

The Flyers, seeking to end their three game losing streak, headed to Long Island for an afternoon Veteran's Day game with the Islanders. The Flyers had a lackluster performance in the first two periods, but left New York with a 3-1 win.

Danny Briere scored the first goal of the game at 13:40 of the Second period, but left the game after that period. It was described as a "lower body injury" and he will be re-evaluated after the team travels to Pittsburgh. It does not appear to be serious but we will have to keep an eye on the situation.

The penalty kill held off eight Islander power plays, including two 5 on 3 disadvantages. They also added a shorthanded goal of their own. Mike Richards knocked in a Simon Gagne rebound to make it 2-0 and to give the Flyers their league-leading 6th shorthanded goal of the season.

Martin Biron played a fantastic game, turning away 35 of 36 Islander shots; the lone Islander goal coming from Trent Hunter with 3:40 left in the game. His counterpart, Joey MacDonald also played a good game for the Islanders.

Kimmo Timonen added an empty net goal in the very late stages of the game to seal the win for the Flyers.

New acquistion Matt Carle, playing in his second game with the team, lead the team with almost 27 minutes played, and spent time on the Power Play and Penalty Kill. He played well this afternoon and seems to have chemistry with rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa.

With the win, the Flyers now improve to 5-6-3, and still remain in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers now travel to Pittsburgh for a Thursday game with the Penguins.

Scott Hartnell did not play in the third period as he was benched by Coach John Stevens, as a "message to the team." Hartnell, the subject of recent trade rumors, says the benching had nothing to do with the rumors.

Ryan Parent, Randy Jones, Ossi Vaananen, Riley Cote & Darroll Powe were the Flyers scratches.
