Eagles Draft Picks: DT Trevor Laws

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 ·

Instead of just handing out a grade right away, over the next few days we're going to look over the Eagles draft picks. We will provide a grade at the end, but be aware, I liked the draft more than the average Eagles fan. Maybe, I've turned over a new leaf and I am just planning to wait things out. It is extremely hard to judge a draft just by the names on paper. You cannot evaluate someone on the job until they do it. So, we will have a post-draft grade, a post-training camp grade, and a post-season grade. All scouting analysis will be taken from NFL.com.

First up, DT Trevor Laws. Laws played defensive end in the Irish's 3-4 defensive scheme, but he is a defensive tackle in the 4-3 defensive scheme (where he spent his first 3 seasons). Laws is an intelligent player with a high motor and has the ability to read plays well. Last year, he led D-1 in tackles for loss.

Positives: Has outstanding strength and excels at using his upper-body power to slap away blocks on a consistent basis. Plays at a low pad, showing lateral range to make plays down the line. When chasing from sideline to sideline, he refuses to give up on the play.

Negatives: While he keeps his hands active, but he struggles to disengage when blockers get their hands into his jersey. He plays with good field vision, but his lack of height causes him to get caught up in trash. Shows only adequate ability to control the line of scrimmage and anchor.

Overview: Most people think that Laws was picked a little high, but he is a decent fit for the Eagles 4-3 scheme. Also, lets face it Laws will not be a starter. He will be in the defensive tackle rotation and that will alow him to play a high motor for longer. He will have to improve his technique a little more from the inside as most scouts seem to think he may struggle there.

Pick Grade: B-

A small introduction...

We Hate to Lose began in October 2007. The initial purpose of the website was to provide news updates and commentary on all four major sports teams in Philadelphia. Because of time-constraints, in April of 2009, I decided to post only on my first-love, the Philadelphia Phillies.

My name is Justin Evans and I hope you enjoy the site.
