Vengence - Flyers 4, Penguns 3

Friday, January 25, 2008 ·

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 last night. Now they are in first place heading into the All-Star break because they hold a game in hand. The Flyers have been 11-2-1 in their last 14 games since their horrible 6 game winless streak.

“It’s like a playoff game every night,” said Stevens of the Atlantic Division games. “It’s an old cliché that they are four point games, but they really are.”

“It’s fun to play against these teams,” added Scott Hartnell. “We all get up for these games. Everyone is doing a great job collectively. We’re fighting together, playing together, and it’s awesome to see.”

Penguin, Georges Laraque, was given a major for checking from behind and a game misconduct when he hit Downie in the corner. A scrum ensued following the hit, and on the next faceoff with two seconds left, Riley Cote was issued a 10-minute misconduct for trying to start a fight with Pittsburgh’s Ryan Malone.

Because of Laraque's major, the Flyers had the opportunity to extend their powerplay goal streak to ten games and they did when Jim Vandermeer's slap shot found the back of the net.

Pittsburgh came right back on the same power-play when they scored on a controversial short-handed goal. The goal was not only nearly off to completely off its posts, but Biron was clearly interfered with by Jordan Staal.

Less than a minute later, Mike Knuble scored the game winner.

The Flyers will return to action on Tuesday when they host the Los Angeles Kings. Don't forget to watch the All-Star game festivities this weekend.
