It looks as if the Flyers have their priorities heading in the right direction for the 2008-09 season. After signing defense men depth and a couple 4th liners that can play good physical hockey, the Flyers made sure they held onto the general.
Head coach John Stevens signed an extension that will lock him up through the 2010-11 season. He has built up a tight chemistry with the core of this team when he coached them to the Calder Cup with the Phantoms a few years ago. Now he is hoping to lead the same group to the Stanley Cup Finals.
“John is very deserving of this new contract,” said Paul Holmgren, the Flyers GM. “He is a very energetic coach who brings a lot of enthusiasm and passion to the game and we look forward to working together over the next few years.” [Comcast Sportsnet]After a heart breaking loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals last year, the Flyers and the fans will accept nothing short of a Finals berth. And with the improvements made and return of Simon Gagne, that doesn't seem out of the question.
