The Sixers will be sending Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth, and a future first round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves to clear cap space, so the Sixers can make a run at either Elton Brand or Josh Smith. [Comcast Sportsnet]
The move would free up nearly $2-4 million in cap space, but it'd leave their bench pretty thin as Carney was one of their better options off the bench in terms of a shooter. It is not clear of what the compensation will be because the source spoke in anominity due to the fact no deals can be announced as official until tomorrow.
Also, the ESPN's sources say that the Sixers are very much in the mix to land Elton Brand. Though he is higher in age, I'd actually prefer Elton Brand's style over Josh Smith's. Elton Brand is a career 20 and 10 guy, who also gets 2 blocks per game and nearly 3 assists. He does not have the same athletic ability as Smith, but he shoots at higher percentages and he is a better rebounder, which will help lead the Sixers out on the fast break.
We'll see what happens tomorrow as it is the first day that teams can officially sign players. Elton Brand already has a 5 year offer of between 85 and 95 million sitting on the table from Golden State. Is the weak Eastern Conference enough to lure Brand away from the West Coast? He did grow up on the East Coast.
