Eagles Draft Picks: DE Bryan Smith

Thursday, May 1, 2008 ·

Pick #80, Bryan Smith - DE - McNeese State
Bryan Smith is a small defensive end prospect who will most likely have to be moved to outside linebacker if he wants to make any impact on the field. He was the most dominant edge rusher in 'Football Championship Subdivision' over the past two seasons, but his 6'2" 228 frame is too small to play defensive end.
Positives: Good burst off the snap and shows the balance to sink hs shoulders and drive around the offensive tackle. Reads the action quickly and flashes the change of direction to flatten out and beat backs to the edge. Flashes strong use of hands to disengage from blocks.
Negatives: Only flashes the athleticism necessary to transition to outside linebacker, but he has no real experience. Lacks the strength to hold up to effective blocking. He was not viewed as an intriguing enough prospect to be invited to any high level all-star games.

Draft Grade: D- if they expect him to play any DE. C if they project him to move to OLB. Would have like S DaJuan Morgan with this pick instead and he went two picks later.
