The Philadelphia Phillies appear seriously interested in free-agent pitcher Kris Benson. Benson is looking for a one year deal with incentives, so it wouldn't exactly be a high risk, but it could provide a medium-high reward. Benson could be a more efficient fifth starter than Adam Eaton. Benson has thrown privately for Phillies scout Chuck LaMar twice in the last week.
We have interest," assistant general manager Ruben Amaro said last night. "We're talking to his agent."Benson plans to throw again on Saturday, but it will not be a private workout. He has a career record of 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA.
Kris worked out for the Phillies, and initial reports are the Phillies were pleased," Clifton said. "He'd love to continue discussions with them, and he'd love the chance to be part of that staff in '08. He really likes that team."
