Jevon Kearse Gets the Ax, Reed Signed, Hanson Tendered

In a series of moves today, the Eagles cut former pro-bowl defensive end, Jevon Kearse, signed safety, J.R. Reed to a one-year contract, and gave cornerback, Joselio Hanson, a one-year tender offer. If another club signs Hanson to an offer sheet, the Eagles have seven days to match it. If the Eagles fail to do so, they will receive a second-round pick as compensation.

Jevon Kearse played 4 seasons with the Eagles, but missed 19 games during that span and never had more than 7 1/2 sacks in a season.

This was move we all knew was going to happen. Kearse in-efficient play during much of his Eagles career has been criticized with the rest of the Eagles' lack of defensive pressure. Kearse would have been due around 8 million if he played and his cap hit for his release will be somewhat around 4 million.

With regard to Reed, he played well enough last year to earn a tryout in training camp to make the team full time as a back-up safety. Hanson is slotted to be the teams nickel cornerback next season.

Eagles to Release Kearse

Jevon Kearse's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed that the Eagles will be releasing the defensive end. Rosenhaus said that they wanted to restructure his contract with the Eagles, but they were unsuccessful.

“Yeah, we expect Jevon to be released,” Rosenhaus said outside the media room at the NFL scouting combine. “I expect Jevon to be a free agent. We tried to work out a [contract] restructure with the Eagles. We thought he had a wonderful career there, they’re a great organization. We weren’t able to do it.”

We all knew that Jevon Kearse would most likely be released after his injury-plagued career with the Eagles. I don't mind the move at all with Kearse owed a lot of money and also getting up in age. I'd also love to see Darren Howard released as well, along with McDougle. They certainly need to address the position in the offseason. Trent Cole is a stud, but there is not any emerging stars currently on the roster to play opposite of him. Juqua Thomas has some spurts, but he's not a full-time starter. I'd expect them to look at a mid-level free-agent or possibly Justin Smith who had a down year last season with the Bengals.

Jevon Kearse's Home Up for Sale

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end, Jevon Kearse, has put his home up for sale because of the likelihood that he will be released prior to next season. His Moorestown, NJ home has an asking price of 3.1 million dollars.

Jevon Kearse Philadelphia career totals are: 24 sacks, 86 tackles, and 6 forced fumbles in 45 games.

I'd rather the Eagles keep Kearse and get rid of Darren Howard instead. Either way, they cannot look at Abiamiri and Juqua Thomas as replacements. Trent Cole however has earned the starting role.

Jevon Kearse's Final Game?

Is this Kearse's final game as an Eagle? It is quite a possibility especially with the play of Trent Cole. I'd prefer to keep Kearse and drop Darren Howard, however they both have not been great the last two seasons and have large salary cap numbers. The problem is if we cut Kearse, I see Lurie just pocketing the money and not putting it to use like normal.

Philadelphia Eagles:

Kearse said he would "love" to stay in Philadelphia, but understands Sunday could be his last game as an Eagle. Kearse signed with the team during the free agency period prior to the 2004 season.

"Yeah, it did cross my mind, but I'm trying not to look at it like that. If it's reality, it's reality. But I've got to wait and see," Kearse said. "I know the last game is Sunday, then we have our one-on-one meetings with Coach (Andy) Reid and then after that, see where it goes. But, right now, my main focus is really to just get healthy and not give anybody else or any other team a reason or any kind of excuses or whatever."
