If the signing Raul Ibanez didn't end your hopes for retaining Pat Burrell, the era is officially over now. According to ESPN, Pat Burrell and the defending AL champion Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a 2 year, $16 million deal. Yep, $2 million a season less than what we're paying for our new left fielder, Raul Ibanez. We didn't sign Burrell because we were worried about his raise. Hmmm.
Would the Phillies have still signed Ibanez if they knew Burrell would sign for less than the $14 million he saw this year? Probably, because Burrell has been signed to play DH, which most likely lead to the cheaper contract. No one, including the Phillies felt they could devote much of a contract to a player who was really just a home run and walk machine, but didn't offer much else with his slow foot speed.
For Pat Burrell, the cheers turned to boos, but finally returned to cheers when people finally realized how valuable he was, regardless of his batting average. Below is the final hit for Pat Burrell in a Philadelphia uniform. It will likely go down as one of the biggest, most "clutch" hits in Phillies history. It took him all series long for him to get his first World Series hit and it came in the biggest way.

gonna miss u pat
I'm gonna miss him. It seemed as if the organization hated him for the longest time, dating back to all the times they wanted him to lift his no-trade clause. I really don't see Ibanez playing up to Burrel at all next year but I sure would hope ot be proven wrong. Good luck Pat!
