End of an Era...or Two?

Sunday, December 28, 2008 ·

Last night, GCobb happened to be on the radio on my trek home from Philadelphia and he was asking callers to voice their opinion on what they would prefer to happen.

1. Would they want the Eagles to lose to Dallas if it ensured the departure of Reid and/or McNabb?
2. Who do they think will be gone regardless of a win or loss? McNabb or Reid?
3. What would be the best scenario?

After the jump, I will answer each question and I will try to be as objective as possible.

01. Plain and simple, I can and will never root for the Dallas Cowboys. You just can't. There is no guarantee that a loss will end either era and most of us know that it will most likely not end Reid's. There always seems to be some form of a scapegoat year after year. This year, the lack of a running game will because the line didn't do well enough blocking and that we were without Shawn Andrews. I mean, seriously, you should all know how this Eagles front office and regime works.

Regardless, we cannot root for a Dallas win and having to see them possibly in the playoffs for over a month. That would sicken everyone more than anything. At least it should.

Do you really think the Reid era will end? Do you truly want it to end? What do you want, continuous seasons where will we win more than we lose or do you want a Championship. The new coaching field out there is rather thin and it is highly doubtful that they will outdo Reid.

Personally, the more that I think about it. Like McNabb, Reid just needs better people around him. Surrounding him with say Marty Morhningweig is NOT the best of ideas. Marty was terrible running his team and he has been terrible as a coordinator. Consider Congress and the Presidency, if everyone feels the same way, it is almost like a Monarchy. We need someone who will challenge Reid's brain farts.

He definitely needs a real GM, a real director of personnel, and a real offensive coordinator. The play-calling definitely needs a drastic change, but the organization also needs to do a better job of adding depth to the roster...and using that depth. There is no reason why the Eagles do not use Buckhalter more often to spell Westbrook. If they want to extend Westbrook's health through the life of his contract, they need to start using other players to filter in for him. They're just killing his body game after game. Every other team in the NFL has no problem filtering in backups. Depth is becoming a problem with this team.

Also, they still need to add a go-to possession receiver. Yes, DeSean Jackson has been great this year, but he's not exactly lighting up the end zone and they still lack that red zone target...at least they prefer not to try it with Hank Baskett. The receivers work great against a zone defense, but they did not get the seperation they need in man coverage.

Also, McNabb was probably at his finest when he had a real tight end, which is something this team has lacked since Chad Lewis. They need someone who can block and catch. Why does this team want to run the West Coast offense if they lack the personnel to do so.

That is my biggest pet peeve with Reid, the way he manages the personnel and he fucking tells you after every loss about he failed. Well, do something about it.

02. I am truly on the fence with this one. I mean, I wonder how McNabb would be with someone else calling the plays. I'd almost like to give him one year with someone else. The entire regime would need a change though because as I mentioned above, if they keep the same players surrounding McNabb, he'll still be looking for the same targets. Likely having the same results.

03. One caller had quite possibly the best result. A tie would all, but likely make sure both teams will miss the playoffs. How hilarious would the Reid era be if it ended with a 2 tie season.

Hey, it could happen, right?

Lastly, we have the optimistic view. The cup is half full and if both Tampa and Chicago lose, combined with an Eagles win, the Eagles will be in the playoffs. Yes, somehow, someway the Eagles will be in the playoffs.

Hey, that could happen too, right?

How can you blame Marty for the offense when it is clearly Reid that is calling the plays?

1) agree. can never root for Dallas, ever!
2) agree as well. I don't think it's entirely McNabb's fault and I think a year with a new guy would be sufficient in whether or not DM needs to go too
3) the best scenario is for them to win because it would atleast mean they kept Dallas out, didn't give up on, and maybe they stole some of NY's magic that they used last year.

Brandon,

They both call plays, but they run the same schemes.

Whatever though, it is working so far today.

A small introduction...

We Hate to Lose began in October 2007. The initial purpose of the website was to provide news updates and commentary on all four major sports teams in Philadelphia. Because of time-constraints, in April of 2009, I decided to post only on my first-love, the Philadelphia Phillies.

My name is Justin Evans and I hope you enjoy the site.
