Flyers Trade Ryan Potulny

The Flyers have traded forward Ryan Potulny for defenseman Danny Syvret. The Flyers solely made the trade based on need, which is clearly defense. The Flyers are already extremely deep at forward, so there was not much room for Potulny who will now likely get a chance to play in Edmonton.

Syvret is a soon to be 23 year-old defenseman who has been stuck in the Juniors and the AHL. Syrvet is a little undersized, but he can be a decent player to come up if there is an injury or suspension. He's not likely to a full-time starter or stay up for long periods of time in a season. Below is the scouting report from Hockey's Future:

The worst thing you can say about Syvret is that he will never be 6’3 and 215 pounds. His strong skating is rarely noticed, as he doesn’t get caught out of position much and with a talented group of forwards in front of him, he doesn’t have to carry the puck up ice. He makes good passes and knows when to take the safe play off the glass. He didn’t have much of a shot in his first two seasons in the league and tended to pass the puck off to teammates, but in his final year in the league he has developed a strong one timer and has been excellent at moving off the point deep into the offensive zone and burying some chances. Syvret is not big, but has strong legs and takes care of his own end with his smarts, positioning and skating ability. Despite the knock on him for his lack of size, he has never missed an OHL game due to injury and he plays big minutes for London.

Future

Syvret has begun the 2006-07 campaign in Grand Rapids and will fight for every minute of ice time he gets.
