Schilling wants back in pinstripes!

Saturday, October 13, 2007 ·

The Philly Inquirer is reporting that the Phillies would be on Curt Schilling's short list of teams to pitch for if he does not resign with the Boston Red Sox.

Curt Schilling has always expressed interest in wanting to finish his career with the Phillies. Also, a one year contract would be a perfect fit for what the Phillies are trying to do financially, especially for a 41 year old pitcher and most especially when long-term contract extensions for Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels are looming. Hamels and Schilling at the top would be nice. There is also talk that the Phillies would pursue closer Mariano Rivera if he reaches the market. If this happens Myers could be moved back to the rotation or remain in the bullpen and become a perfect set-up man.

Discuss.

Everyone knows he's not the same guy as when he left here, but if gives our staff much more credibility, takes a ton of pressure off of Cole who at 24 is looked at as "the guy", and the fans here love him as much as any player in the past 15 years.

And though I get Myers as a closer, it feels like such a waste of his stuff. If we were able to get a guy like Rivera and move Brett back, we suddenly have one of the most dangerous staffs in the NL. Of course, we thought that last year with Garcia and Lieber too...

Here are two scenarios if they sign both Schilling and Rivera.
1-They move Brett back to the rotation and they have Hammels,Schilling,Myers,Moyer, and Kendrick(if not someone else)Which is a pretty decent rotation if Schilling is healthy.
Or they keep Myers in the pen and now that is a big strength since both he and Rivera canpitch more than one inning. It sure sounds good but you have to wait and see...(no duhknow)

Mariano Rivera barely pitches more than 1 inning a game anymore.

If they could get both I think you'll see Romero (he loves it here and they love him) as the setup man, if not we'll see Gordon in the setup role for Rivera again.

If they can get Schilling as well, you will see a rotation of...

Schilling/Hamels
Hamels/Schilling
Kendrick
Moyer
And dare I say it...Eaton (if Myers does not return to the rotation. If he does he will be the third starter.)

I would love to see Curt back in Philly because I think he can still contribute to this team.

I don't think I would like to see us spend the money on Rivera but I would love to see them spend it on improving the pitching staff in Schilling. Remember we have Madson coming back next year so we do have atleast 1 bullpen upgrade.

I also want to see our money being spent on Mike Lowell. He is a big name thirdbasemen and it would be nice ot have one of those back in Philly after the departure of Scott Rolen.

I hope they get both of them and I do think it's very possible. And Eaton will be our 5th starter, regardless. They are paying him 8 mil a year so he will play....unless he dies.
