NLDS Preview: Phillies-Brewers

Tuesday, September 30, 2008 · 1 Comments

A streak has to end. Neither the Phillies nor the Brewers have won a playoff series in a long time. The Phillies are better defensively, better offensively, and they have a better overall pitching staff. The NL East Champions should win. However, the Brewers are a team who's bats can get hot real fast and whenever CC has the opportunity to possibly pitch twice in a short series, it is going to be tough.

A Broad View:

Phillies
In the regular season, the Phillies averaged about 4.9 runs per game and allowed only 4.19. Their +119 run differential was third in the majors only behind Boston and Chicago. Their 799 runs scored was 93 off of last year's pace. Earlier in the year, they were on pace to surpass the 892 runs from last year, but their offered faltered much of the summer, luckily heating up just in time for the September stretch run. Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Pat Burrell all had struggling streaks when the weather was hot, but at least Utley and Rollins are getting back to normal. The Phillies have two year in and year hot MVP candidates in Utley and Howard. Hopefully, hopefully they tune their game to become October MVPs. No one in baseball is hotter than Ryan Howard is right now.

The pitching has been the best it has ever been in a long time, both in regards to the starters and the bullpen. Pitching was the question earlier in the year, but it truly carried this team through some tough times. The Phillies are going to continue have to rely on good pitching, but also hope that their situational hitting improves. When the weather cools down, home runs are tougher to hit with consistency.

Brewers
The Brewers come into the postseason averaging 4.6 runs per game while allowing 4.25. However, their rotation has taken a hit because Ben Sheets will likely be unavailable for the entire series. Yovani Gallardo is a stud prospect, but he hasn't pitched during most of the year. He injured his knee in May and his only start with the Brewers since was last weekend. C.C. Sabathia will pitch on 3 days rest for the fourth time in four starts in Game 2. While it is likely that he'll continue to be effective, question marks will still arise.

Both the offense and bullpen struggled in September, but finally returned to mid-season form in the final week of the season. The Brewers are another team that relies heavily on the long-ball. Both powerful lineup could put up big numbers, but it is hard to expect any 10-8 slugfests in the cold Philadelphia and Milwaukee weather.

Offense
Batting Average:
Phillies - .255
Brewers - .253

On-Base Percentage:
Phillies - .332
Brewers - .325

Slugging Percentage:
Phillies - .438
Brewers - .431

Home Runs:
Phillies - 214
Brewers - 198

Walks:
Phillies - 586
Brewers - 550

Strikeouts:
Phillies - 1117
Brewers - 1203

As you can tell, the Phillies have the edge in the major categories. Well, how about the "clutch" situations.

With runners in scoring position, the Phillies still seem to have an edge as well.

Batting Average:
Phillies - .263
Brewers - .245

On-base Percentage:
Phillies - .365
Brewers - .337

Slugging Percentage:
Phillies - .443
Brewers - .405

Walks:
Phillies - 219
Brewers - 192

Strike Outs:
Phillies - 299
Brewers - 312

On paper, the Phillies have a better offense. In their most recent 4-game series, the Phillies outscored the Brewers 26-10. The Phillies are a better situational team, but they will have to improve to completely hold off a Brewers lineup that could heat up really quickly.

Phillies Team Leaders:
Avg: Shane Victorino - .293
OBP: Chase Utley - .380
SLG: Ryan Howard - .543
HR: Ryan Howard - 48
RBI: Ryan Howard - 146
R: Chase Utley - 113
SB: Jimmy Rollins - 47

Brewers Team Leaders:
Avg: Ryan Braun - .285
OBP: Prince Fielder - .372
SLG: Ryan Braun - .553
HR: Ryan Braun - 37
RBI: Ryan Braun - 106
R: Ryan Braun - 92
SB: Corey Hart - 23

Pitching:
With the addition of C.C. Sabathia, the Brewers had one of the best 1-2 rotation in baseball with he and Sheets. Well, Sheets is likely not going to pitch. So now, the Brewers new 1-2 punch is Sabathia and Gallardo. Don't slouch on Gallardo. He has question marks, he's young, but he has amazing stuff. The rest of their rotation is a question mark as they're still not sure who will pitch game 3.

The Phillies have one of the better National League aces in Cole Hamels who's recored had a lot to do with the Phillies lineup's inability to score runs for him. Hamels leads the league in innings and may be feeling some fatigue, but he'll have 8 days in between starts. Hopefully he is refreshed. Myers have seemed to have found himself since being sent down, but he has been unable to spot his fastball in his last two starts. A problem he had before he was sent down. Hopefully he gets back to whatever he was doing before those two starts. To pitch game 3, the Phillies well send out 45 year-old vet, Jamie Moyer. Moyer was 16-7 for the Phillies this year with a 3.71 ERA. Unreal.

Well, let's compare them. First the Starter's.

Innings:
Phillies - 966.2
Brewers - 983.1

ERA:
Phillies - 4.23
Brewers - 3.86

W-L:
Phillies - 59-47
Brewers - 59-48

Opponent BA:
Phillies - .264
Brewers - .259

Ks:
Phillies - 670
Brewers - 725

Walks:
Phillies - 322
Brewers - 314

WHIP:
Phillies - 1.36
Brewers - 1.31

HRs Allowed:
Phillies - 123
Brewers - 119

The Brewers have the edge, however these numbers both include Kyle Kendrick, Adam Eaton, and Ben Sheets. Three starters who will not pitch in this series. I remind you though, Gallardo has the type of stuff that shut down the Phillies last year with the kids in Colorado. As you can see, the Brewers rotation was able to go deeper into games.

The bullpens:

Innings:
Phillies - 483
Brewers - 472.1

ERA:
Phillies - 3.19
Brewers - 3.83

W-L:
Phillies - 33-23
Brewers - 31-24

Opponent BA:
Phillies - .251
Brewers - .249

Ks:
Phillies - 411
Brewers - 385

Walks:
Phillies - 211
Brewers - 214

WHIP:
Phillies - 1.38
Brewers - 1.39

Blown Leads:
Phillies - 15
Brewers - 26

The Phillies definitely have the bullpen edge, though they struggled in August and early September. The Brewers bullpen isn't as far off as some may have thought. They still got the job in the grand scheme of things, but those 26 blown leads are not good news for the Brewers fans.

Both of their fielding defense are not great, but they're not terrible. They have a few holes, but rarely do they absolutely kill their respected teams.

Final Analysis:
I don't like making predictions, but I have to, Phillies in 4 or 5. If it gets to 5, the Brewers will likely send out Myers against Sabathia, unless the Phillies plan to use Blanton if there is a game 4, pending on what the series is at. I think both teams are mirror images of each other, but the Phillies experience last year, as little as it is, should deem a huge factor.

Play ball!

Brad Lidge Named NL Comeback Player of the Year

After converting 41 straight saves for the Phillies this year, Brad Lidge was named the NL Comeback player of the year.

Since his downfall from the "home run", Lidge worked his way back to an elite level of closers and he was the only one who was perfect with his save opportunities this year. Cleveland's Cliff Lee took home the honors for the American League.

Let's just hope he continues his perfection.

Rotations Set?

Monday, September 29, 2008 · 0 Comments

The Phillies have announced that Cole Hamels will pitch game 1 on Wednesday, Myers for game 2 on Thursday, and Moyer for game 3 on Saturday.

Yes, Moyer is more consistent than Myers, but the Phillies seem to prefer to not use two lefties back to back. Also, Moyer, an experienced pitcher, is who you'd want pitching game 3, the first one in Milwaukee.

If the series reaches game 4, Blanton could start, or relieve Cole Hamels on short test. If somehow there is a game 5, Brett Myers would likely get the ball in Philly.

The Brewers are likely going to start young-phenom Yovani Gallardo who just returned from the DL. C.C. cannot pitch until game 2, but he likely will make his fourth straight start on 3 days rest. Sure, he's been successful, but you cannot expect that run to last forever. Ben Sheets is likely out for the NLDS and Jeff Suppan or Dave Bush would pitch game 3. - Milwaukee Brewers

Hopefully the excitement of finally making the playoffs in Milwaukee makes them tight for the postseason like we saw against Colorado last year for the Phils.

Check in tomorrow for a full series preview.

Inside the Eagles - Week 4 Edition

Hmmm, I am really not sure how to write this piece. A part of me just wants to write about forty expletives and be done with it, but I figured that would not appealing -- and well most of you have already said those expletives.

Coming off a huge win against the Steelers, I felt that this game prior to a division rival in Washington, would be a trap game. Well, it happened. The often predictable Eagles offensive play-calling in the red zone cost them again. They were a horrendous 2-13 on third-down conversions and they failed to score a touchdown when they had first and goal inside the 5 twice. They did have 3 drives that close and punched it once, with the same running play they tried 4 straight times late in the fourth quarter.

Before this article gets completely negative, I want to remind everyone that it is still only week 4 and plenty of top tier teams have lost games they were supposed to win this season.

Click after the jump to read more analysis.

Remember DeSean Jackson is just a rookie.
People want to rip apart DeSean Jackson after his fumble in Dallas and muffed punt last night. The muffed punt hurt the Eagles, but you have to remember, Jackson was not even supposed make close to this much of an impact this season. He had 143 total yards last night and a touchdown. He's been drawing coverage which has opened up the field for guys like Hank Baskett, Greg Lewis, and Jason Avant. He's been an NFL pro for four weeks. Do you think he didn't learn about the touchdown mistake? After scoring yesterday, he handed the ball right to the referee. He's a rookie and his sky is the limit. Devin Hester, Brian Mitchell, Dante Hall and so on have muffed punts in the past. Yes, the turnover hurt, but the Eagles defense forced turnovers to turn the page and the offense failed.

Andy Reid hates running a quarterback sneak.
In our first first and goal with short yardage to go, Andy called a nice run by Buckhalter and they scored. The next two opportunities were as follows.

Late in the third quarter:
1st and 2 at CHI 2 (5:08) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to H.Baskett (N.Vasher).
2nd and 2 at CHI 2 (5:03) D.McNabb up the middle to CHI 6 for -4 yards (M.Anderson).
3rd and 6 at CHI 6 (4:31) D.McNabb pass incomplete short left to J.Avant (N.Vasher).

If you do not remember, that bootleg pass too low for Baskett. McNabb being tripped up and falling on the ground and then the slant pass to Jason Avant.

Late in the fourth quarter:
1st and 4 at CHI 4 (5:40) C.Buckhalter right guard to CHI 1 for 3 yards (K.Payne).
2nd and 1 at CHI 1 (5:03) T.Hunt right tackle to CHI 1 for no gain (K.Payne, M.Brown).
3rd and 1 at CHI 1 (4:19) C.Buckhalter right guard to CHI 1 for no gain (A.Ogunleye).
4th and 1 at CHI 1 (3:40) C.Buckhalter left guard to CHI 1 for no gain (A.Brown).

We all remember this. Why is Andy Reid so afraid to run the quarterback sneak? It takes less time for the defense to be able to get penetration. Andy has always been against running a quarterback sneak and it really boggles my mind. I understand that Donovan McNabb is banged up and some said he may have even had to leave the game last night, but you never ran it in the past Andy. And no, the end zone tries were not the only times where you chose not to.

3rd and 1 at CHI 32 (6:13) C.Buckhalter right tackle to CHI 32 for no gain (A.Brown, K.Payne).
4th and 1 at CHI 32 (5:29) D.Akers 50 yard field goal is No Good, Wide Right, Center-J.Dorenbos, Holder-S.Rocca.

In the second quarter, Andy Reid felt that he shouldn't have tried to use the quarterback sneak on either third or fourth down. David Akers has been horrible in his recent career on any kick deeper than 45 yards. I'm not quite sure why he still ha faith in him. In turn, the Bears used to great field position, drove down, and scored a touchdown.

Andy Reid needs to throw away the 100 page playbook and call a play that every playbook has, the QB sneak.

The Eagles need to improve on third down.
Last night the Eagles were 2-13 on third down. This year, they've only converted 39.6% of their third down opportunities on the season. Yes, missing Brian Westbrook, Kevin Curtis, Reggie Brown, L.J. Smith, and Shawn Andrews have not helped, but the play-calling and non-execution by players capable of converting these opportunities is the real problem. The Eagles have depth, so let's not make the excuse that so and so was not out there. They have to improve over the next 12 games if they even want to sniff the playoffs.

Praise or Disappointment for the Defense?
Yes, the defense allowed 24 points last night. Yes, they allowed 3 passing touchdowns by Kyle Orton. Yes, they failed to stop Matt Forte on third and long deep in Bears territory to force a punt. However, the defense had 4 sacks, forced 4 turnovers, and cause many other hurries and deflections to disrupt Kyle Orton in the second half. The Bears converted only a handful of first downs after the break and scored only 3 points. The game was there for the Eagles offense to take the lead, but they didn't.

The offense's misfortunes early on gave the Bears good field position, which they capitalized on. The average NFL team should be able to put up points with a short field. The Bears are slightly above average.

If the Eagles have to be carried all year by the defense again, there is no way they're going to make the playoffs or at least far in the playoffs. Defense wins championships, but the offense still needs to do their part.

Final Analysis:
The Eagles are 2-2. They were a victim of a trap game, they've become the victim of another NFL trap game. Most realists felt the Eagles would be 2-2 after this week, but losing to Pittsburgh instead of Chicago. The season is far from over, so while this loss sucks, there is plenty of time left to rebound. The Eagles will continue division play next week against the Redskins. Next week is a must-win, even in week 5 because their opponent is a Redskins' team on fire. I don't like saying a week 5 game is a must-win, but it is in this case.

Eagles-Bears Preview

Sunday, September 28, 2008 · 2 Comments

The 2-1 Eagles play their second nationally televised game of the season when they travel to the Windy City to take on the 1-2 Chicago Bears. Our Birds are coming off a 15-6 win over the Steelers, while the Bears blew a 10 point lead and lost in overtime to the Bucs.

Bears Offense vs. Eagles Defense
The Eagles defense looked great against the Steelers last week and the Bears don’t exactly have the best offense, ranked 15th in the NFL. The Eagles defense is second in the entire league, even with the Dallas game. Kyle Orton is not a very good quarterback, and if the Eagles pressure him like they did to Ben Rothlesberger, the Chicago offense will be stalled. The Bears also have rookie HB Matt Forte, who has averaged over 100 yards in his first three games. However, the Eagles have the best rush defense in the entire NFL, allowing about forty yards per game.
Advantage: Eagles

Eagles Offense vs. Bears Defense
The Eagles both have Donovan McNabb & Brian Westbrook listed as Questionable today. While McNabb is likely to play, Westbrook most likely will not. This will affect the Eagles offense, as seen last week. Correll Buckhalter will have to pick up the slack if Westbrook is out. The Bears boast LBs Brian Urlacher & Lance Briggs as well as CB Charles Tillman and DE Adewale Ogunleye, but this Bears defense is not the same as it used to be, being ranked 18th in the NFL.
Advantage: Eagles

Special Teams
Devin Hester is listed as Questionable, and if he’s out for the Bears that will be a huge blow for their special teams. Bears’ kicker Robbie Gould has been used a lot in the last few years, and he has not let them down. David Akers is Mr. Automatic and Sav Rocca is developing into a very good punter.
Advantage: Push

Injuries
Eagles:
Out: DE Victor Abiamiri
Doubtful: OG Shawn Andrews, TE L.J. Smith, WR Kevin Curtis
Questionable: HB Brian Westbrook, QB Donovan McNabb
Probable: FB Tony Hunt, C Jamaal Jackson, DT Dan Klecko

Bears:
Doubtful: OT Chris Williams
Questionable: DT Tommie Harris, KR Devin Hester, WR Brandon Lloyd
Probable: DE Alex Brown, CB Nathan Vasher

Other Information
The Eagles have won their last four in Chicago, and Donovan McNabb has never lost in his hometown. However, the Bears defeated the Eagles in Philadelphia last season, 19-16. While it is rainy and gloomy in the Philadelphia area, it is expected to be clear in Chicago. The Eagles are only 3 point favorites in this game.

Keys to the Game
1. Don’t slouch on defense. Do the same thing they did to Pittsburgh.
2. Put the game out of reach early.
3. Win the Trench Battle on both sides of the ball.

The Prediction: Eagles 23, Bears 13

College Football Sunday Outlook

The "white-out" worked again to perfection in Happy Valley against Illinois. Penn State Derrick Williams' 241 total yards including a rush, a receiving, and a return touchdown helped Penn State improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2005 with a 38-24 victory.

Williams had the break out game that everyone at Penn State had been waiting for over the last four years. He's going to need more as the Nittany Lions begin a tough 5 game stretch, with four road games including at Wisconsin and at Ohio State. With the big win and the top 10 collapse, I'd expect Penn State to rise to 6 or 7. Just something to look at it, though I don't believe it hold a lot of value. Oregon State just dominated USC. Penn State beat Oregon State by 31.

Temple lost their homecoming game 7-3 at Lincoln Financial Field. It has been a tough year for Owls as 3 of the 4 losses have been by 4 points or less. 3 of those 4 games, they've held late leads. With quarterback Adam DiMichele going down last week against Penn State, it's going to be an extremely tough road for the Owls to get back into MAC championship contention. Temple travels to Miami of Ohio next week.

Lastly, there was a huge Football Championship Subdivision upset. #19 Villanova beat top-ranked Richmond 26-20 at Villanova Stadium. Nova ran the ball for 226 yards against Richmond. The big win will likely move Villanova way up in the standings. Villanova travels to William & Mary next weekend.

Final NHL Game at the Spectrum

Yesterday, a game was played, but that took the backseat to the end of a landmark. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the final NHL game at the Spectrum. It truly was a surreal experience. It was the first and last game that I've ever seen there. I wish I could say that it brought back memories for me, but you could tell how loud the place used to get. The "Let's Go Flyers!" chants were amazing (check out the videos). See pictures here.

The pre-game ceremony was an awesome experience to see live. The crowd was so loud and really into it. I am currently in the process of trying to upload the entire ceremony for everyone to see from Section 321A.

It was awesome the Flyers scored all 4 goals at the end I was sitting at. I was such a fun overall experience and it was emotional for a lot of people. Mike Richards received the jersey with the 'C' and scored 2 short-handed goals for the 4-2 victory. Such a hell of a player with plenty more room to grow.

Back to Back National League East Champions

Saturday, September 27, 2008 · 0 Comments

Ground ball up the middle, diving grab by Jimmy Rollins, flips it to Utley, fires it to first, double play. Phillies repeat as National League East Champions and clinch their second straight playoff berth.

A hell of a game. Today, I was at the complex for most of the early day because I went to the Flyers (spectrum game) which I will discuss later. I got home right before the Phillie started scoring and only a few hours later, the celebrating began.

I'm not going to give a recap on the game. You know what happened. You watched what happened.

Brett Myers has just guanteed that the Phillies will not go 3 and out.

Anyway, I want to say something. Sometimes I do get negative. I will voice some knee-jerking remarks, but overall, I love the team. They have great chemistry and everyone seems to know their role. Sometimes shit happens when people are placed out of their role, but that is not necessarily their fault. I live and die with this team more than any other Philadelphia team. I don't know why, but it has always been Phillies first for me.

The Phillies have won 90 wins for the first time since 1993 and we all know what happened then. I will see you guys there on Wednesday and I will be screaming my lungs out.

Let's go Phillies!

Win and they Clinch

Friday, September 26, 2008 · 1 Comments

The Phillie did their job and beat the Washington Nationals 8-4 on a misty night in Philly. Ryan Howard provided the early fireworks with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first. Chase Utley followed the Ryan Howard show up in the 2nd with a 3-run double to give the Phillies a 6-1 lead. Howard followed immediately with a double of his own to give the Phillies a 7-1 lead.

The Nationals pushed it to a 7-4 game, but the Phillies added a run late on a passed ball to make it 8-4. The bullpen recorded the final 9 outs after Blanton went 6 innings giving up 4 runs, but only 2 earned. And then it was time to scoreboard watch...

The Mets lost to the Florida Marlins 5-1 tonight, lowering the magic # to 1. If the Phillies win tomorrow, they're in. If they win tomorrow, they can give Hamels rest and use him in game 1 of the playoffs. If they win, everyone can relax. If they win, my heart will not explode. Thank you Florida Marlins. For two straight years, we've appreciated your effort for us.

In other playoff news, the Brewers took a 1 game lead over the New York Mets by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1. Yes, the Mets collapse has taken full circle again as they are on the outside looking in, on the final weekend.

Also, it should not matter, but the Phillies clinched at least a one game playoff for the division. Jamie Moyer will take us to glory tomorrow.

Magic Number Remains at 3

Both the Mets and Brewers won last night in late-inning fashion to move only one game behind the Phillies for both the division and final playoff spot. Getting nervous? I wouldn't feel nervous if the Nats did not give us games all year. The Phillies have only gone 9-6 against the worst team in the National League.

It is very highly unlikely that the Phillies or Mets will play tonight because of the weather, likely forcing teams to scramble and play either a double-header on Sunday or games on Monday.

This is for all the marbles or at least a playoff spot? How do you feel? The Phillies controlled their own destiny with plenty of ease in the final week, but now they have to scoreboard watch and rely on the help of the Florida Marlins and Chicago Cubs.

If the Phillies fail to make the playoffs, I truly am not sure about what I am going to do. No, I won't be jumping off any bridges, but it may be the tipping point to where I totally stop caring about baseball or this organization anymore. I really don't think I can continue to handle the depressing nonsense year after year.

Well, they're going to make the playoffs, right? There's too many stars on this team for it to not to happen. They're going to field properly and cut the shit out with the pathetic at-bats they put on display against the Braves.

Dawkins Wins Defensive Player of the Week

After speaking about his age, Brian Dawkins showed the Philadelphia media he can play at a high level. He didn't just impress the media and the fans but also the NFL as they recognized him as Week 3's NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Dawkins racked up 10 tackles, a sack, a forced and recovered fumble. On the sack, he flew over an offensive lineman and smack the ball out of Ben Roethlisberger's hand. He then recovered to scoop up the loose ball, setting up an Eagles field goal that secured their 15-6 win over Pittsburgh.

This is Dawkins' 3rd career Player of the Week award as he won it in 2002 versus Houston and 2006 versus the Giants.

McNabb, Smith, Andrews, and Westbrook Absent

Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, L.J. Smith, and Shawn Andrews all sat out of practice this morning with injuries. [Philadelphia Eagles]

Donovan McNabb will definitely play and Brian Westbrook is still questionable. Smith and Andrews, both with lower back problems, will likely miss Sunday night's game in Chicago. The injury to Andrews would hurt the Eagles if third year guard Max Jean-Gilles was not able to step in and play well. When Andrews went out on Sunday, Jean-Gilles did just fine.

Brent Celek will most likely start for L.J. Smith, and with Smith's recent play the past few years, it may not be much of a downgrade. I'd expect to see Schobel as well as he'll likely be out there on situations where they need him to block.

Buckhalter will start if Westbrook misses the game.
And here is the rest of it.

Pretty Please, Phillies

Dear Phillies,

Recently, I purchased playoff tickets. I spent $40 a pop on two standing room only tickets for my father and I. I just want to let you know that for some odd reason, I am not nervous. I know you're going to win the division and we will face the Dodgers on Wednesday, October 1st. I don't know why I feel this way. Often, more times than not, I am one of the least faithful fans out there. It really has nothing to do with you as a team either. Sure, I have voiced my frustration with the Phillies' ownership. I mean, seriously, who hasn't.

I'm really sorry that I do get down on you guys. It's just, well, I've never seen a title. I was born in January of 1984 and like the rest of us born after the summer of 1983, we've never been alive for a Philadelphia parade. I'm not asking you to win the world series, I'm not expecting it. Somehow, win your way into the playoffs. Win the division. Be the first back-to-back NL East Champions since the Braves did it 14 times in a row. Establish something. This city needs you. I need you. I love and die by the Phillies more than any other Philadelphia team. Yes, I am critical and at times I have to be. With sometimes there being hundreds of zombie-like fans at the park, I have to speak up and say something, right?

It's just tough love. No hard feelings. You have to promise me that you will make the playoffs. Promise me you will try your best to win the division. I want to see a Phillies playoff game live for the first time ever in my life. Please, continue your ways of making that dream come true. Let me be honest, I had to spend money on Cubs-Marlins and Marlins-Yankees games in the past just to say I experienced playoff baseball. Now, please give me the opportunity to experience Phillies' playoff baseball.

Sincerely,
Justin

Phillies Falter

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

Figures, I bought playoff tickets today and now I am getting nervous. The Phillies magic # remains @ 4 after tonight's disappointing loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The Mets won 6-2, but the Brewers are losing at this moment 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th.

If the Brewers do indeed lose, the magic # to clinch a playoff spot goes to 2.

Up 1.5, the Phillies still control their own destiny.

This team needs to put up more runs for Cole and his next start will likely be Sunday if the game matters.

4 games left.

Sorry there will be no real recap tonight, I have some other business to take care off.

NFL Power Rankings Week 3

We're back for week 3 and I will unveil my new power rankings. There may be some surprises.

1. Dallas Sucks (3-0) - I hate to put them first, but it is hard to argue against them now. They're 2 for 2 against top NFC teams. Last week: 2

2. New York Giants (3-0) - Yes, the Bengals took them to overtime, but they still pulled out the win. They'll fall sooner later. Last week: 3

3. Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) - The defense held a very good Pittsburgh offense in check. We won't see that performance every week, but even a portion of it would still be nice. Last week: 4

4. Tennessee Titans (3-0) - They have the best scoring defense in football right now and a very good rushing attack. Last week: 5

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) - The Eagles shut them down and now they're without Willie Parker this week and they have a beat up Big Ben. Last week: 1

6. Denver Broncos (3-0) - Their defense still sucks, but their offense is going to be hard to handle. Last week: 7

7. Green Bay Packers (2-1) - Yes, they lost at home to Dallas, but everyone would likely lose to Dallas right now. Last week: 6

8. Buffalo Bills (3-0) - Hey, they came back to win and improve to 3-0. They're currently in the driver's seat in the AFC East. Last week: 10

9. San Diego Chargers (1-2) - They're the best 1-2 team in football and could still very easily finish the season 11-5 if not better. Last week: 12

Pat and the Kids

Update: The Mets lost 9-5 to the Cubs.

The offense got it started early again when Rollins and Utley hit back-to-back doubles to go up 1-0 in the first. Shane Victorino scored in the 2nd on a Ruiz ground-out.

J.A. Happ was once again able to put together a good big league start, though his only blemish was a 2-run home run that he allowed with 1 out in the 7th inning to tie the game. That home run was only one of the 5 hits he allowed and he also struck out 5. After Happ got another out, Rudy Seanez came in to get the final out of the inning.

The eigth however looked a little scary. Kelly Johnson led off the inning with a double, but reached third base on an error. Omar Infante hit the next ball hard, but lined it to Rollins. Then, Seanez got Francoeur to chase a low pitch that he grounded to Rollins. Rollins fired the ball home to get Johnson out at home. Scott Eyre got Casey Kotchman to line out to center to end the inning.

The bottom of the inning was all smiles. Greg Dobbs lead off the inning with a pinch-hit single. Pinch-runner Greg Golson reached third base on a terrible pick-off throw by Jeff Bennett. After a Rollins ground out and intentional walk to Chase Utley, Jayson Werth hit a soft grounder to third. The speedy Golson slid in before the tag at home to make it 3-2. Howard followed it all up with a deep fly ball to left, but it was Pat Burrell who sent the crowd into a frenzy. Pat the Bat sent a 3-1 pitch deep into the left field stands to boost the Phillies lead to 6-2.

With Brad Lidge unavailable, Ryan Madson pitched the ninth to close things out.

Division Magic # = 4
Wild Card Magic # = 3

The Flyers opened up their preseason schedule with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils. In a penalty filled game, or penalty filled first period, the Flyers started the scoring early when Mike Richards scored the first of four even-strength goals. Steve Downie also added a first period goal to head into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Steve Downie later scored in the third period for his 2nd goal of the night and Scottie Upshall capped the night off with an empty netter. The Devils lone goal came off a turnover by highly-regard prospect, Claude Giroux. Martin Biron played the first two periods and played well, stopping all 20 shots that he faced. Maxime Quellet played the third and stopped 8 of 9 shots he faced.

Notables who were not in action: Randy Jones, Glen Metropolit, Joffrey Lupul, Mike Knuble, Lasse Kukkonen, Kimmo Timonen, and Danie Briere.

Inside the Eagles

It was an old-time football game that we rarely see in this era of football. It was a battle of two heavy weights. Arguably the best in the AFC (after-Brady) against one of the best in the NFC. Eagles-Steelers, the battle for Pennsylvania. The Eagles were a 4-point favorite and they pulled out a 15-6 victory with a stout defensive effort.

The Offense

It's really hard to judge the offensive performance. First, the Eagles were playing a great Pittsburgh defense. Secondly, without Westbrook for most of the game, the Eagles had to completely alter their game plan.

Early on, things looked alright as Buckhalter had a great TD reception as he leaped over a Pittsburgh defender to get into the end zone. However, the offense slowed down after McNabb suffered a chest contusion. They were able to move the ball, but their drives would stall. McNabb started the game 15 for 15, but went 9-20 the rest of the way. The throws he was making pre-injury looked far less accurate after his injury. You could tell that he was tight. With the lead, the Eagles probably should have tried to run a little bit more, but they settled on the pass, even with an injured quarterback. However, it was hard to run with both Tony Hunt and Brian Westbrook both being injured.

We saw a little bit of the Kevin Kolb experiment that ended with an interception and a completion on a risky pass, though he put it in the only place it could go. However, I still wish we drafted Eric Weddle instead of Kevin Kolb. Hank Baskett had a career day for the Eagles with 8 receptions for 85 yards. Hopefully this can continue as he was a great possession receiver and made some great catches to extend their drives.

Defense

I don't know how to describe the defense. Perfect comes to mind, but even that may underestimate the performance. The defense was absolutely amazing. Jimmie Johnson's blitzes put a great of pressure all day on the Steelers. With the Eagles corner not having to worry about the best receiver in football, they felt safe leaving them out in man-to-man coverage. 9 sacks! 9 fucking sacks! I thought that type of goal could only be achieved if the opposing offensive tackle was Winston Justice (who is still on our roster for unknown reasons). One of the sacks even forced Big Ben to be sacked for a safety.

Once again, the Eagles slowed down the rushing attack of their opponents. I told you last week that was not a good measure of our defense and it proved correct. 33 rushing yards. 45.7 yards allowed for 3 games. The young linebacking group is continually doing a good job at stuffing the run.

Asante Samuel made a great interception and in his second straight week showed his playmaking abilities. I cannot remember the last time I saw an Eagles defensive back go up for the ball the way he did an actually made the catch. Brian Dawkins had a much better week. He was all over the field and a big part of their great run-stopping ability. He made the play of the game when he jumped across the field to not only sack Big Ben, but he also forced and recovered the fumble.

Special Teams

Quinton Demps had two good kick returns, but the star of the special teams was Sav Rocca. He booted a 64 yarder, but also pinned the Steelers inside their own 10 twice. One of the punts later lead to an Eagles safety.

Offensive Star - Hank Baskett
Defensive Star - Jimmie Johnson and the entire defense.
Special Teams - Sav Rocca

Turning point - 6 sacks in the 2nd quarter set the tone early and forced the Steelers to adjust their blocking assignments, which often forced Heath Miller to stay in to help out.

Phillies Extend Lead to 1.5

Sunday, September 21, 2008 · 2 Comments

Sorry guys, I am going to make this pretty quick. John was supposed to write the recap, but he failed.

Anyway, Jamie Moyer notched his 15th win of the year by doing what he has done so often in his career, beat the Florida Marlins. With the 5-2 win combined with a Mets loss, the Phillies widened their division lead to 1.5 games. They also improved to 20 games over .500 for the first time all year.

Jamie Moyer pitched 6 innings of allowing only 1-run to improve to 11-1 all-time against Florida. He find himself in a few jams, but got out of them with ease.

Chase Utley got the offense started with a 2-run home run in the third. In the fourth, Carlos Ruiz and Jamie Moyer both reached base with 2 outs and Jimmy Rollins got his third hit of the game to increase the lead to 3-0. After Durbin/Romero struggled and allowed a run in the 6th, Pedro Feliz stepped in with a huge hit. If you didn't see the game, Greg Dobbs left the game with a cramp in his right calf. Well, good timing because Charlie Manuel had to make a double-switch and Pedro Feliz went yard to make it 5-2. Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge shut down the rest of the game, though Brad Lidge needed 29 pitches.

Brad Lidge improved to 40 for 40 in save opportunities. He has clearly outdone himself.

Ladies and gentlemen, the final home stand of the 2008 season is here. J.A. Happ and the Phillies will host Jair Jurrjens and the Braves tomorrow @ 7PM.

Phillies Retake First

Saturday, September 20, 2008 · 1 Comments

Joe Blanton pitched well tonight, going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs in the Phillies 3-2 win. He gave up 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 9. The bull pen also pitched great, giving up 3 hits in 4 innings, striking out 7. Brad Lidge closed the 9th, earning save number 39.

Shane Victorino had a solo home run and got 2 hits. Gregg Dobbs also had 2 hits including a double. Chase Utley drove in a run as well as Dobbs and Victorino. Utley also had the only other hit for the Phillies, whose offense was terrible.

The Mets lost 4-2 to the Braves, puting them .5 games back to the Phillies. The Brewers also lost to Cincinnati, putting them 2.5 games behind the Mets for the Wild Card. The Phillies also hold a 3 game lead on Milwaukee in case the give up the division. The Mets still have an extra game in hand.

Pitching Probables for tomorrow:
J. Moyer (14-7, 3.86), C. Volstad (5-3, 3.07)

Fish End Phils Streak

Brett Myers was due for a poor outing and the hot Marlins were the ones to hand it to him. Myers (10-12) lasted only 4+ innings, giving up 10 runs on 9 hits as the Marlins beat Philadelphia 14-8. Kyle Kendrick also pitched in relief in the 8th, giving up a home run.

The Marlins exploded in the first inning with 5 runs and then scored 5 runs in the 5th before Myers could even record an out.

On the offensive side of the ball, Ryan Howard hit his 46th home run of the season, going 1-4 with 3 RBIs. Greg Dobbs and Shane Victorino also had homers, both solo shots.

The Mets won yesterday, moving to half a game ahead of the Phillies. The Phils have 8 to play and the Mets have 9. In the Wild Card, the Phillies are still 2 games ahead of Milwaukee, who also have 8 games to play.

Probables today are:
J. Blanton (7-12, 4.82), A. Sanchez (2-4, 5.87)

Shawn Andrews got downgraded to Doubtful for Sundays game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Andrews has been experiencing back spasms and was taken out of last Monday's loss to Dallas

"He hasn't recovered as fast as we'd hoped," coach Andy Reid said Friday. "We'll see how he is in the next couple of days."

He will be replaced by Max Jean-Gilles, who replaced Andrews during training camp when Andrews was depressed.

Reggie Brown is also expected to play Sunday. Also Jamal Jackson has missed practice all week due to personal reasons but is expected to play Sunday.

Hatcher on LTIR; Flyers Sign Aubin

Thursday, September 18, 2008 · 0 Comments

Comcast Sportsnet reports that D Derian Hatcher has been officially placed on Long-term Injured Reserve. Hatcher needs more time to rehabilitate his injured right knee.“We've talked a number of times, as recent as this past Wedensday,” general manager Paul Holmgren said.

“We spent a great deal of time with Derian. He wants to play. He knows he is not ready to play right now. Whether he will or won't play will be seen down the road. In the interim, we are going to see if there is something that he can do to help the coaches or find some niche here to help keep him busy.

“It is basically his knee. It is a situation where surgically speaking they really can't do anything. It is a question of strength in his knee. I would say there is a ray of hope. We will see how it goes.”
The doctors have pretty much told Hatcher that it is in his best interest to give it up, but you do have to admire his desire to keep going. He has stated that if he cannot play, he would like to stay with the Flyers as a scout or a coach.

In other news, the Flyers have signed goalie Jean-Sebastian Aubin to replace Antero Niittymaki, which may be out 4-6 weeks after hip surgery. Aubin is 31 years old and a veteran, but he's not very good. He will not in any means come close to challenge Biron for a starting job. Hopefully he found magic similar to Ty Conklin last year for the Penguins if we need him.

And here is the rest of it.

Dawkins Speaks About Age, Future

Brian Dawkins sat in front of a group of reporters for 6 minutes Wednesday and left them speechless. He was questioned about his performance in last Monday's loss to Dallas, his age, and his future.

On his age and future:

“I guess it’s the age question today,” he said. “I play the game the way that I play the game. … I am 34 years old and proud of it. Thank you Jesus for allowing me to get to 34 playing in the NFL. I am going to continue to play this game at a high level as long as I can. I am going to protect my body, make sure that I’m out there on the field for my guys, and I am going to play ball. “I’m going to play ball at 34. I’m going to play ball at 35, and whatever else comes after that, I’m going to play ball. So if I give up a deep ball and if you want to say I’m slow, go ahead. Guess what? The next time I’m going to try to make the same play again at 34 or 35 years old.”

Oh Happ-y Day

Wednesday, September 17, 2008 · 0 Comments

J.A. Happ threw 6 scoreless innings for the Phillies to help continue the Phillies winning ways and to get his first major leagu win. The lineup batted around in the first inning, having 4 cross the plate. Ryan Howard knocked in the game's first run and Carlos Ruiz provided 2 RBIs for the Phils. Matt Stairs also hit his first home run as a Phillies in the 6-1 victory.

Happ threw strikes early and often relying on his defense to get a majority of the outs. Happ rarely find himself in a jam as he allowed only 4 hits and walked 1. He located his pitches well and proved at least for tonight to be a positive replacement for Kyle Kendrick. Chad Durbin pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Clay Condrey finished off the ninth.

Currently, the Brewers are leading the Cubs. The Mets are struggling with the Nats in the ninth, but with a 4-run lead, they'll likely hold on. There will probably be no movement in either race after tonight, however, there are now less games to be played.

The Phillies will have their ace, Cole Hamels, on the mound tomorrow to face off against Mike Hampton. Hopefully Hamels fairs better against the Braves this time around.

NFL Power Rankings WEEK 2

From here on out, I will be posting my version of the NFL's power rankings. We know this is a pro-Eagles page, so I will try my best not to be biased. So, here we go.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0) - another year, another great defense. Their first real test will be Sunday in Philly.

2. Dallas Cowboys (2-0) - They beat us. What can you say? They're good. I think the secondary injuries will soon take a toll, but their offense is filled with playmakers.

3. New York Giants (2-0) - Spagnulo is still putting together a great defense and Eli may have finally turned the corner.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) - Probably too high, but it is hard to not put them here after their impressive effort in Dallas. Best run defense in football.

5. New England Patriots (2-0) - No real test yet, but they have a coach who always finds a way to win. Margins may shrink, but I'm not sure about the win.

6. Green Bay Packers (2-0) - Good offense, below average defense. Big test against Dallas.

7. Denver Broncos (2-0) - Best offense in football, but remind me of West Virginia football. Not a good enough defense for the big game.

8. Indianapolis Colts (1-1) - Losing Bob Sanders will extremely hurt their poor run defense.

9. Carolina Panthers (2-0) - They're playing great football right now without Steve Smith. We need them to lose 14 straight!

10. Buffalo Bills (2-0) - Not great in any department, but they're good enough to make a run at the Patriots.

To see the rest, click below.

11. Tennesse Titans (2-0)
12. San Diego Chargers (0-2)
13. New Orleans Saints (1-1)
14. New York Jets (1-1)
15. Arizona Cardinals (2-0)
16. Chicago Bears (1-1)
17. Washington Redskins (1-1)
18. Tampa Bay Bucs (1-1)
19. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2)
20. Baltimore Ravens (1-0)
21. Minnesota Vikings (0-2)
22. San Francisco 49ers (1-1)
23. Cleveland Browns (0-2)
24. Houston Texans (0-1)
25. Atlanta Falcons (1-1)
26. Seattle Seahawks (0-2)
27. Oakland Raiders (1-1)
28. Cincinatti Bengals (0-2)
29. Miami Dolphins (0-2)
30. Detroit Lions (0-2)
31. Kansas City Chiefs (0-2)
32. USC Trojans
33. St. Louis Rams (0-2)

Richards: Born a Captain.

Mike Richards has been handed the 'C'. Outside of maybe Kimmo Timonen, Mike Richards is easily the best choice for captain, regardless of his age. Leadership qualities are a human characteristic, not an obtainable skill or an age restricted duty. Sure, some people may not realize that they're ready to lead, but they will always carry those certain qualities.

“It’s obviously a privilege to be part of such a traditional organization, and be captain of it,” he said. “I am going to do my best to do it. We have a lot of great team leaders right now on our team, and you don’t have to change anything. I think everybody really helps out around the dressing room. There are so many leaders, you just kind of have to do your own thing and more worry about yourself and help out where things are needed.” - Philadelphia Flyers
Richards is the 17th captain all-time for the Flyers and the fourth in as many years; however, Richards is in the first year of his 12 year extension, so he'll likely carry the 'C' for many years to come. Kimmo Timonen and Simon Gagne will be the assistant captains.

Also, is there a possible line change?

John Stevens is tinkering with moving Danny Briere to right wing and he'll play along side Mike Richards and Simon Gagne. Jeff Carter would center line two and Glen Metropolit would likely center the third line. The biggest questions coming into camp will be where Steve Downie and Claude Giroux play if they make the lineup.

Howard Homers the Phils into First!

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 · 0 Comments

Do you remember the post about Mr. September? Ryan Howard did it again. First in the top of the 7th, he tripled in a run to make the game 7-5 and scored on a 2-out RBI single by Shane Victorino. In the top of the eighth, Howard went yard for a 2-run home run to give the Phillies a 8-7 lead.

After Ryan Madson pitched a perfect bottom of the 8th, Lidge found himself in some trouble. After walking the bases loaded, Brad Lidge got Gregor Blanco to strike out to end the game. The Phillies now hold a half-game lead over the Mets (same amount of losses) and possibly a full game lead over the Brewers for the Wildcard.

Starter Jamie Moyer struggled with his control as he walked 4 and hit a batter. I think pitching on short rest got to him, but hopefully he is rested enough to pitch in Florida on Sunday. Howard knocked in 3 runs on the night and Jayson Werth also hit is 23rd home run on the year. The Phillies had an early 3-0 lead, but lost it in the third. Carlos Ruiz gave the Phils a 4-3 lead in the fourth with a homer, but the Braves scored 4 in the 6 to take the 7-4 lead. The rest of the game was all Howard related and he was a double short of the cycle.

Everything about this game could help continue the momentum to aid the final push toward the playoffs. The Braves are not going down without a fight and the Phillies will face Jair Jurrjens tomorrow. Jurrjens has pitched well against the Phillies, only allowing 3 runs in 15 innings of work (2 starts). JA Happ will make his fourth start for the Phillies.

Tuesday Morning Quarterback

After sleeping on the four point loss to the hated Cowboys, an objective analysis is needed. This was a game that was expected to be an “L” by most at the beginning of the season, but our Birds didn’t go down without a fight. Let’s take a look at some of the positives.

We Hung In Against a Super Bowl Contender
As much as we hate to admit it, Dallas is the class of the NFC. However, in this measuring stick of a game, the Eagles showed they can hang with the big boys and gave Dallas a run for their money.

DeSean Jackson Looks Like He’s For Real
Other than him flinging the ball away before he crossed the goal line (and dancing like he was having a seizure), Jackson had another 100+ yard game. He becomes the first rookie in 68 years to have over 100 yards in his first two games. And if you knew the answer was Don Looney in 1940 before ESPN said it, you get bonus points.

Burning Questions
Shawn Andrews left the game with an apparent back injury, but when did it happen? Max Jean-Gilles filled in admirably, but the Eagles Offensive Line in the fourth quarter looked tired and lost at times. Could Andrews have helped?

What was Andy Reid, and McNabb, thinking on some of those playcalls in the fourth quarter? The obvious evidence of idiocy was the final play of the game when the Eagles tried to lateral twice and still fell short. On the play prior, McNabb was sacked for a seven or eight yard loss, when he should have just simply thrown the ball away. It would have been an easier 4th down, and we would not have had to use our last timeout.

Why were Lito Sheppard (and Sean Considine) covering Terrell Owens? T.O. blew past both for an easy score early in the game. Wasn’t Asante Samuel paid a King’s Ransom to cover the best WRs?

Is Tony Kornheiser from Dallas? The whole game all we heard from him was “Dallas is so great, etc.” Did he not realize the Eagles were also playing, and trading leads? The way he made it seem was Dallas was winning 41-0. He was more annoying than all the shots of T.O., Jerry Jones, Tony Romo and mentions of Jessica Simpson combined, which I think was around 250 times.

Final Analysis
The Eagles are 1-1, and have put a lot of points on the board. There were a lot of positives to come out of the game that were overshadowed by the final result. Next week will be a test, hosting the 2-0 Steelers. We still have one more game against the Cowboys, at home, a few days after Christmas. Looking at the remaining schedule, if the Eagles can get out of September at 2-2, they should be in good shape. There is no need to panic right now.

Justin's Side Write-Up

Here are some notes I took while I was listening to the main teacher tell her students about a chameleon, or something along those lines.

- The Eagles offense is legit. Scoring thirty points on the road in Dallas is impressive. Sure, we could bicker about some of the red zone opportunities, but they still scored and scored often. Besides the fourth quarter that has often haunted McNabb, he looks 100% and in 2004 Super Bowl form. He ha great velocity on the balll, and better accuracy then in the past (67.5% yesterday). Brian Westbrook is still Westbrook and amazing. DeSean Jackson put in another impressive effort and he is already in an early battle with Darren McFadden for offensive rookie of the year. He was also the second rookie ever to begin his career with back-to-back 100 yard performances. Hopefully, DeSean becomes a little smarter with his fumble blunder that cost he and fantasy owners around the world a touchdown. Thankfully, Dallas did not pick up the ball and the Westbrook got the touchdown a play later. At least we know the talent is there. Be Smarter DeSean!

In the fourth quarter, the offensive play-calling was a little questionable, but things were going to right previously it was hard to argue that much with the gameplan. I'm not a big fan of Reid's gimmick plans as they often don't work (see fake reverse hand-off) and the hook and ladder. McNabb was able to throw deep over the middle all game. I know they had no time outs left (would have McNabb threw the ball out of bounds), but they should have attacked the middle of the field more often. Also, what happened to the screen pass or TE bubble screen? The team put up 30 points offensively, and that should be enough to win any game.

- Defensively, I'm not sure if this game is even worth judging. Sure big plays happened everywhere, but they happened for both teams...and both teams have stellar defenses. It was just one of those heavyweight bout type of games and almost everything offensively was going to work for either team. In the first half, the Eagles did a great job of shutting down the run, but the killer was when Lito Sheppard and Sean Considine were beat on the big touchdown to TO. Sean Considine IS HORRIBLE and does not deserve a roster spot, but I am not going to expand on that. There was some good news, the Eagles did force two turnovers and scored a defensive touchdown. Finally, the defense was in the right place at the right time for at least some points. Also, 14 points off two turnovers is the best you can do and the Eagles did that. I'm afraid Brian Dawkins is not the cover guy he used to be and all of the injuries may have taken a toll on his speed and agility. Hopefully he returns to old form.

- Special Teams were not very good. The Cowboys often had good field position and even broke a kick off return for a touchdown, regardless of the blatant hold on the return. I'm not even sure if the hold would have mattered that much. Good field position for a great offense is never a good combination.

David Akers was successful in his 3 field goal attempts and Sav Rocca averaged 51.7 yards a punt.

I think there were 3 possible turning points or points where I got a bad feeling in my stomach:

1 - When Dallas drove down and kicked a field goal with little time left in the first half. Knowing they were getting the ball to start the half, I thought the field goal would provide huge momentum.

2 - When the Eagles had first and goal on the one, but failed to punch it in after a false start penalty. I wish Andy would bring back the QB draw because teams seem to rarely even look for it anymore (though McNabb's running ability in the game will make teams worry again). Having to settle for 3 instead of 7 proved to be the defecit.

3 - The most obvious, the fumbled exchange between McNabb and Westbrook. The Eagles were driving well and had a good chance to put points on the board. The Eagles offense was never able to rebound.

Final Thoughts:

I knew the Eagles had the team to beat the Cowboys, but I felt if this game was played ten times, each team would win five times. There are so many playmakers on both sides of the ball that this game could have gone either way and it's hard to be upset with the effort. Sure, shit didn't go our way this game, but the Eagles DO have a better coaching staff and have always proved to make adjustments against the Cowboys during the second game of the season. It's week 2, I'm optimistic even after a loss to Dallas.

Sweeping their Way into the Wild Card

Sunday, September 14, 2008 · 0 Comments

The Phillies won both ends of the double-header today to complete the sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. In a series comparable to the 4-game series last year against the Mets, the Phillies offense came alive scoring 26 runs in 4 games and the pitching staff only allowed 10.

Some fans were skeptical of this series and other kept the faith. I'll admit, I was skeptical. I thought after that Florida series, the fight might be gone, but the Phillies have yet to give up and they now find themselves tied for the Wildcard and tied in wins with the Mets (83), but two more losses. The Mets will play tomorrow and the division lead will shift a half game in the Phillies favor or not.

I attended the day portion of the double-header and it was a great game. Things didn't start out too well when Blanton gave up a 1st-inning 2-run home run to Ray Durham, but the Phillies fought back from a 3-1 deficit, specifically when Ryan Howard hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 6th. The crowd was ecstatic from then on and Joe Blanton didn't need the bullpen until the 8th inning. After what looked like another off-start, Blanton did "eat some innings."

In the bottom of the 8th, Pat Burrell knocked in the go-ahead run on a line drive to left field. Jayson Werth just barely got in before the tag with a great slide. Too add insurance, Shane Victorino hit a 3-run home run to push the lead to 7-3, which would be the final score. You could almost feel that this win would absolutely destroy the Brewers' morale and when leaving the stadium, everyone felt that the team would complete the sweep.

Some fans even stayed and those who did erupted when the Mets blew their ninth inning lead to lose 7-4 to the Braves.

In the night cap, the rally towels were out. Jimmy Rollins got things started early with a double. He would later score on a double play ground out by Chase Utley. In the second inning, the Phillies had a run knocked in by Brett Myers of all people with an RBI single to right. I think he was pissed off that Coste was intentionally walked to get to Myers. Rollins followed it up with a 2-RBI single himself to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead. Later in the game, Burrell hit a moon-shot home run and Jayson Werth was walked with the bases loaded to give the Phillies a 6-0 lead. The 6 runs, well 2 runs would be all they needed.

Brett Myers was absolutely phenomenal on 3-days rest. He did everything we could ask for and more. Brett Myers threw his second complete game since August 20th allowing only 2 hits, one being a solo home run to Prince Fielder to lose the shut out. Myers threw ONLY 95 pitches and struck out 4 Brewers. Brett had great command on all his pitches, especially his change-up, which seems to be getting better and better. When Myers was designated for assignment, he had a 5.84 ERA. After tonight, he has a 4.06 ERA. He and Hamels have finally become 1A and 1B.

Other good news? Pat Burrell went 3-7 on the day with a home run and hopefully he finally comes out of his slump. He almost dipped below .250, but his go-ahead single in the day game ended that possibility.

The Phillies are off tomorrow before the begin a 6 game road trip in Atlanta and Florida. The Phillies need to find a way to go at least 4-2 or 5-1. There is little room for error right now. Every game is a must-win from here on out. With 12 games left, I would think the Phillies need to go 8-4 or 9-3 to make the playoffs.

Cowboys-Eagles Preview

Get your popcorn ready, T.O. The 1-0 Philadelphia Eagles will have an answer for your comments Monday night and it will not be in the form of words. Terrell Owens, the infamous wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, had plenty of comments all week, from saying he got "too big" in the city of Philadelphia for McNabb to claiming the '08 Cowboys are better than the '04 Eagles and most recently saying that the Eagles can't cover him 1 on 1.

Remember Mr. Owens. Your Cowboys have only beaten Philadelphia once in the 2 years you have been in your new home and you have failed to be effective in those losses.
Records: DAL (1-0); PHI (1-0). Dallas leads series 54-43.
Scheduling: 8:30 on ESPN. Game is in Dallas
Last week: Dallas beat Cleveland 28-10. Philadelphia beat St. Louis 38-3
Last time met: December 16, 2007 - Eagles beat the Cowboys 10-6 in Dallas.
Ratings after the jump:

Assessing the Offenses:
Dallas: Tony Romo is coming off of a great win over the Browns last week. Despite having injuries to the receiving corps, Romo was able to create 4 scoring drives, throwing a TD to Owens. Jason Witten and Patrick Crayton stepped up as well to help Dallas' offense. On the ground they have Marion Barber and rookie Felix Jones. They combined for 142 yards on 25 carries and 3 TDs last week. This Cowboys offense is very capable of putting up points. Their 2-RB attack can be a bit of a problem against a young Eagles front 7. Their offensive line is one of the best in the league.

Philadelphia: Donovan McNabb is healthy and hungry. He played phenomenal last week, shaking any suspicion of him being washed up. DeSean Jackson was spectacular in his first NFL game showing that he has the ability to be a play maker in the NFL. Injured receiver Reggie Brown is listed as questionable for Monday but he will likely be playing. TE LJ Smith is healthy as well and his presence could be very well needed when Dallas sends the blitz. The big story will be how will Brian Westbrook exploit the Cowboys defense. The entire league knows about him so he is definitely not going to be a secret to Dallas. One way he pay exploit the defense is the attention he will receive. Seeing him lined out wide can take attention off of Jackson, Smith, and Brown, opening up the field to all 3 of them. The offensive line looked good, not allowing a sack.
Advantage: Even

Assessing the Defenses:
Dallas: Dallas has a good front 7, with the line led by end Marcus Spears. The line backers are very good with Greg Ellis, Bradie James, Zach Thomas, and Demarcus Ware. It can be a long day for the run game and an even longer one for the offensive line of the Eagles if they can't get a push. The secondary for Dallas is good but there are question marks with Adam Jones. He is listed as the nickel for Dallas but plays on 3rd down when they move Anthony Henry to the free position because of Roy Williams lack of success as a pass defender.

Philadelphia: The Eagles young line backing corps was the story last week as they shut down Stephen Jackson. This week, they will face a tougher challenge as they see Dallas' two backs in Jones and Barber. The defensive line is pretty strong despite not having Victor Abiamiri in the rotation. Trent Cole is still the leader of the line and expect him to do some damage versus that line. The secondary is going to be the big story on defense. Will it be T.O versus Lito Sheppard, who has the most experience versus him, T.O. versus Asante Samuel, one of the best corners in the game who shut down Tory Holt last week, or T.O. versus Sheldon Brown. All 3 have the ability to cover him and it is going to be known that all day one of those 3 corners will get help from the safety position. If the Eagles send the heavy blitz like they have in the 3 games they won against the 'Boys, then expect T.O. to disappear early and the offense unable to get rolling against the Eagles. Jim Johnson loves planning against Dallas and expect to see a special game plan for Owens.
Advantage: Eagles.

Special Teams:
Dallas: Nick Folk is the best kicker in the league. Felix Jones is very fast and very dangerous in the open field. Miles Austin and Adam Jones are both in the equation as returners for the kick off and punts as well.

Philadelphia: David Akers shook off some rust hitting a field goal last week. He isn't top in the league anymore. Sav Rocca is turning into a very good punter as he dropped 3/4 kicks inside the 20 last week. He will be the one to keep the returners for Dallas at bay. Philly has a good trio of their own in Jackson, Lorenzo Booker, and Quinton Demps. Jackson almost brought one back last week. Give him room and he's gone.
Advantage: Eagles

Coaching:
Dallas: Wade Phillips is good. He knows how to prepare his team for big games.

Philadelphia: Andy Reid and Jim Johnson know how to beat Dallas. Expect them to show what they know on Monday.
Advantage: Even

Prediction: Eagles 27, Dallas 24

Phils Continue Chase With Win

Saturday, September 13, 2008 · 0 Comments

Shane Victorino said Cole Hamels' last start was a fluke. Well he was right. Hamels went 6.1 strong innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. He also struck out 4. Manny Para got absolutely shelled in his 1.1 innings pitched, giving up 5 runs.

Jimmy Rollins went 3-5 with a homer, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Chase Utley went 2-4, scoring 2 runs and driving in 1. It's about time he contributed. Ryan Howard also drove in 2 and Jayson Werth and Victorino added 1 a piece.

There's not much left to report on the game. The Phillies are now 2 games back in the Wild Card and 2.5 behind the Mets. They Mets split today so they gained a half game on the Phillies, who play a double header tomorrow.

Probables:
1:35 - D. Bush (9-10, 4.23), J. Blanton (7-12, 4.86)
7:35 - J. Suppan (10-8, 4.63), B. Myers (9-11, 4.22)

Phillies Win All 3 Coin Flips

The MLB decided who would be the home team in all 1 game tie breakers if they became necessary. The Phillies won all 3 flips. They will host Milwaukee, Houston, and St. Louis if they have to decide the Wild Card between them.

They will also host the Mets for the East if both teams are NOT guarenteed play off spots. If both are then the team with the best head-to-head record will win the division and the other will be the Wild Card team, which in this case, the Mets will win the division.

Mr. September?

Friday, September 12, 2008 · 1 Comments

Dare we dub Ryan Howard as, "Mr. September?" Yesterday, Howard stated his case by taking Ben Sheets deep twice, once for a homer and once off the very top of the wall in center field. In ten games this month, Howard is hitting .368, reaching base at a 41.5% clip, and slugging 1.000. Twelve of his 14 hits this month have been extra base hits (6 home runs, 6 doubles). He's also knocked in 15 runs this month, soon to surpass his August total of 19. He's homering in every 6.5 at-bats. He's well, the September Superman.

Has he posted similar production in the past? You better believe it. In his short career, Ryan Howard has absolutely murdered the ball in September. In 463 plate appearances, Howard has posted a line of .314/.436/.712. He's also homered 39 times and knocked in 96 runs. He's homered every 9.7 at bats. He an OPS of 1.149, Unreal. He's been everything we could ask from a clean-up hitter, in September, in the clutch.

Earlier this year, many of us, including myself, felt that teams have figured Ryan Howard out. We have been impatient with his impatience, but I think it is about time to accept who Ryan Howard is. Ryan Howard will strike out. An out is an out and Ryan Howard will make outs about 70-75% of the time. It happens and it comes with the player. To ask Ryan Howard to hit .300 would be asking the same from Mike Schmidt. Your average power hitter will hit between .250-.275 and generally the swing in average will be due to Ks and sometimes in Howard's case, the shift.

The year Ryan Howard hit over .300, very few teams played the shift on Howard because they respected his ability to homer opposite way. Now teams have come to understand that just about everything Howard hits on the ground will goto right field. It's a usual problem with power-hitting lefties. Howard's bat speed is so fast that he just about naturally pulls the ball. Now he will hit for power the opposite way and just about every single time he waits back a little bit more and goes with the pitch to left. However, Howard is what he is and you should accept that.

Ryan Howard is going to knock in plenty of runs for this team. He would have likely had more RBI opportunities if the men in front of him didn't slump in July when Howard was hot. Philly, we have one of the best power hitters ever, is he really worth trading? Even his glove has picked up of late. He has always been known to be able to move and flash his leather. He does have some problems with balls right at him, but most of his errors come from his throws. Someone needs to teach him how to throw. Lately, you can tell he has gone for the safer out instead of making a throw because I think he is hesitant about his own throw.

Honestly, I don't know what the Phillies are going to do with Howard. If the past speaks about the future, the Phillies will probably trade him to a team willing to pay Howard and receive prospects that offer little to the team. So, keep him. Pay him not only for his ability on the field, but his marketability off the field. You need a masher in the lineup and Howard is just that. Get over his average. Average is a good stat, but probably one of the last stats you want to look at on a player, especially a player similar to Howard. Howard's home runs are generally game-changers, not stat fillers.

Moyer Wins 14th vs. Milwaukee

Jamie Moyer looked good again as his performance as the Phillies won 6-3. Moyer (14-7) went 5.2 innings giving up only 4 hits, 2 of them being a solo and 2-run homer by JJ Hardy and Prince Fielder, respectively. He also struck out 5 and walked 1. Brad Lidge pitched the 9th for his 36th save in as many chances.

Ryan Howard had another monster game as he went 2-3 with a 2 run home run in the first, his Major League leading 43rd, and then he hit an RBI double that bounced off the top of the padding in center field.

Jimmy Rollins and Pedro Feliz also had 2 hits. Chase Ultey and Pat Burrell both continued with their struggles as they went 1-8 with 3 strikeouts combined.

The Phillies moved to within 3 games back of New York, who had the day off yesterday. Cole Hamels will take the mound tonight and will be facing Manny Para.

Oh, Kyle Kendrick?

Despite a nice offensive effort, the decision to use Kyle Kendrick backfired just about every way a Phillies' fan thought it would Kyle Kendrick lasted two innings, giving up 7 earned. He looked pathetic. Actually, he looked worse than pathetic. He's a pitcher with no out pitch who got by when he got ground balls. His sinker no longer sinks and he's now become worthless.

The Phillies find themselves behind 9-1 early and they fought back to make it 10-8 with runners on second and third with one out in the sixth. However, the Phillies could knock in the 6th and 7th runs of the inning. It's a shame that the Phillies score 8 runs and lost. It really is and I pin this loss whole-heartedly on Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee. JA Happ did not exactly fair much better, but he did fair better than Kendrick. The rest of the bullpen pitched well enough for us to attempt the comeback, but it was just short.

For the second straight night, the Phillies starters put together a piss-poor effort, which made the team use their bullpen earlier than they'd like. I'm sorry, Blanton's effort was not piss-poor, but just poor. With no off days the rest of the week, the Phillies are going to need a near complete game from Brett Myers tomorrow.

Offensively, it was nice to see the offense pound out another high-scoring effort, but this one was all for not. Ryan Howard hit is 41st home run on the year and he's running away with the home run crown now.

Mo' Years for Cheeks

Coach your team to the playoffs for the first time post-Iverson and you're rewarded with not one, but two extensions in the same calendar year. That's right, 76ers coach, Maurice Cheeks signed an extension on time of the extension he signed in February. The terms were not disclosed. [Comcast Sportsnet]

“Over the course of my time here, Coach Cheeks and I have developed an excellent working relationship, one which I look forward to continuing with him as we move forward in an effort to achieve our collective goals,” Stefanski said in a statement released by the team.

“You couldn’t help but to be excited about everything that was going on, particularly the Elton Brand signing,” Cheeks said. “You think about our team before Brand. It’s a hard working team. It’s a team that gets along and then you plug in Brand. Putting Brand with those things I just talked about makes it exciting. Then you fill it in with all these other pieces, with Theo Ratliff, Marreese Speights and Royal Ivey and those type of players, so you couldn’t help but to be excited about those things.”

Definitely, another good move by the Sixers. This Sixers team is together, minus maybe Andre Miller, for the next four to five years. The core of this team before Elton Brand has bought into Cheeks defensive system. Cheeks is 113-133 in 3 seasons with the Sixers, but with higher expectations, his record should rise as well. The Sixers are expected to be a force in the East.

The Offense Prevails!

Jayson Werth's 3-run home run in the bottom of the 7th proved to be more than just insurance, it was necessary for the Phillies to win. After Joe Blanton struggled to reach the 6th inning again because of poor control, the offense had to be in top form to pull out a win.

Jimmy Rollins set the table by going 3-5 with 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. Ryan Howard went 2-4 and knocked in 2 himself. However, it was Jayson Werth's home run off the first Joe Nelson pitch he saw that provided the finishing, and winning touches.

The pitching was well, not great. Even Brad Lidge struggled to earn his 35th save in 35 chances. J.C. Romero allowed a 2-run home run in the top of the 8th immediately after Werth's home run. The Phillies pitching staff issued 4 free passes in the game and each one scored. Blanton has allowed 14 walks in his last 20 2/3 innings pitch (4 starts). That's right, Blanton, the big acquisition, has averaged slightly over 5 innings recently, down the stretch, when's he been labeled an "innings-eater." Well, sorry Mr. Gillick, he's been far from it. Somehow, someway, Joe Blanton raised his record to 2-0.

Quote: Terry Francona is a Dick

From Boston.com, when asked about the Eagles:

And what about the Eagles, the team whose city Francona shared during his occasionally tumultuous tenure managing the Phillies?

“You know how I feel about that,” Francona said. “I want every team in that city to lose. Pretty honest about that. I remember driving down to spring training [the year the Patriots beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl]. They were coming back from Jacksonville. I must have drove by 50 cars that had Eagles paraphernalia. They’re all dejected. I’m honking my horn.”
You know what? I'm sorry Philadelphia gave your first opportunity to manage. I'm sorry you're making money of a great Boston team put together by someone else. Even Charlie Manuel could win with the Red Sox. You're a fucking puppet, "Tito." You were joke in Philly and you're still a joke in Boston.

Near Trifecta

Sunday, September 7, 2008 · 0 Comments

Philadelphia nearly experienced a trifecta of victories today, but the Phillies failed to sweep the day-night double header.

First, the Eagles opened up the season with a bang as they domintated the St. Louis Rams 38-3. DeSean Jacksonuncorked his season hype by totaling up 197 total yards. Donovan McNabb looked like the McNabb we used to love as he threw for 361 yards and 3 TDs. Seven different receivers found the ball make way to their hands today.

The defensive unit was stellar, holding the Rams to only 166 yards of total offense. Check in tomorrow to read our Monday Morning Review of the game.

The Phillies won the first half of the double-header 6-2 by a strong start from Jamie Moyer. The Phillies offense got a big lift from Greg Dobbs who delivered again; this time with a 3-run home run in the fourth. Moyer only allowed 2 hits in 7 innings of work.

Tonight's game was a different story as Johan Santana and the Mets overcame an early 1-0 Phillies lead in the first. The Phillies failed in an opportunity to tie the Mets for first and now they find themselves 2 games back. However, not all is negative. They still won the series, which is something they did not do at all this year. Ryan Howard hit his 40th home run, but it wasn't enough for the Phils behind a below average start from Cole Hamels. Hopefully this division race continues right down to the end.

Monday Morning Review

In the season opener for the 2008 Philadelphia Eagles, they flew high. The Eagles took care of the visiting St. Louis Rams, winning easily 38-3.

Offense: Donovan McNabb shook any suspicion of being rusty, washed up, or what ever the critics dubbed him to be. He was sharp, accurate, agile, and poised, showing shades of the McNabb we all remember. He threw for an impressive 361 yards and 3 TDs, completing 21 of 33 passes. Kevin Kolb looked decent too in his debut as he threw 5/6 for 53 yards.

Brian Westbrook was excellent too, taking a lot of attention away from the receivers. He ran for 91 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass from McNabb on a shovel pass in the first.

Offensively, I would have liked to have seen the Eagles establish the run a little more, but they could not help but continue to exploit the pass defense of St. Louis. McNabb looked great on the deeper routes as he put the ball only in spots where his receivers could make the play on it. The offense will face a big test next week in Dallas. [JE]

The position that impressed the most were the wide receivers. DeSean Jackson, Greg Lewis, and Hank Baskett all had over 100 yards receiving. Baskett had the only TD of the receiving corps. His TD came on a 90 yard pass in the 2nd quarter. LJ Smith had 5 catches for 39 yards and a TD. Westbrook had the first TD thrown by McNabb.

LJ Smith proved quickly how much he was missed in the red zone last year with a nice touch down catch in the first quarter. For the Eagles offense to continue to be prosperous, they will need a healthy TE of Smith's caliber. Multiple weapons on the field at once helped out the young receiving corps. [JE]

The offense as a whole had 522 yards, 414 passing. The offensive didn't allow one sack, keeping McNabb on his feet most of the game. As a whole, this unit looked very good, good news going into a big week 2 match up versus Dallas.

Defense: The Eagles defense may be their best of the three units. Today they shut down arguably a top 10 QB, a top 5 RB, and a top 10 WR. The defensive line got good pressure on Marc Bulger, forcing him to make bad throws and forcing the o-line to jump early. They racked up 4 sacks, with Quinton Mikell, Stewart Bradley, and Dan Klecko getting a sack and Mike Patterson and Darren Howard splitting one.

Could the Eagles secondary be nicknamed the "super secondary"? Asante Samuel made his presence felt early as he knocked down a few passes and nearly had two interceptions. The defense had no turnovers, but they forced St. Louis to punt 10 times.

Stewart Bradley led the team in tackles, a sign that he is going to be a force in the run defense as they held Stephen Jackson to 40 yards on 14 carries.

Normally, we've been used to the bend, but don't break defense that had to rely on turnovers or allowing only field goals. Today, the defense didn't even bother to bend, they just dominated. They only allowed 166 total yards and just flat out controlled the tempo and made the Rams try to adapt to their gameplan. [JE]

Special Teams: DeSean Jackson showed how dangerous he can truly be when he is given room to run with the 60 yard return he had in the 4th. Sav Rocca dropped 3/4 kicks inside the 20, thanks to Quinton Demps back-to-back stops at the 2. He also boomed a 59 yarder. David Akers made went 1/1, hitting a 23 yarder.

Both coverage teams did great today as they didn't give St. Louis good field position. [JE]

Eagles Best number: 361 (number of passing yards by McNabb)

Eagles Worst number: 77 reception yards allowed to TE Randy McMichael.

Eagles Best Play: McNabb's 90 yard touch down pass to Hank Baskett on third down.

Eagles Worst Play: Bulger's pass to Randy McMichael for 31 yards, setting up St. Louis' only score, a field goal

Offensive Player of the Game: Donovan McNabb

Defensive Player of the Game: Stewart Bradley

Special Teams Player of the Game: DeSean Jackson

Next Week: The Eagles is the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. It is an early match-up to help determine the king of the NFC.
