For those who may have missed it, here is the Asante Samuel press conference:

Philadelphia Phillies Commentary... World.Fucking.Champions
Howard Eskin from WIP reported from Spring Training that Adam Eaton's back is acting up again. Do you think this is good news or bad news? Kris Benson is expected to be available in mid-April and the way the Phillies schedule looks, they likely will not have to use a 5th starter until then.
It's sad when we rather watch our $8 million pitcher sit in the dugout than get a chance out on the mound.
The Eagles have signed former Patriot cornerback, Asante Samuel, to a 6 year deal. The rumored money is $54 million and the contract involves incentives that could push it to $60 million.
Personally, I like the deal as it is a little cheaper than the rumored $10 million a year he was looking for. The Eagles were the first to call and they were the only team that Samuel visited today. He is a play-maker on defense and the Eagles felt that he was the #1 free-agent available.
Donovan McNabb reiterated in NFL live that he wanted to add play-makers, but he mentioned they don't only have to be on his side of the ball and Asante Samuel will fill the play-maker void. Samuel had 16 interceptions over the last two seasons with the Patriots and has 5 in 14 career playoff games.
Andy Reid said that Asante Samuel will be the starting left-cornerback, the same position as Lito Sheppard, so it looks more and more like Sheppard will be moved. I would prefer Sheppard to shift to the right corner and Sheldon Brown to safety, but that situation seems very unlikely to happen. It is more likely that Lito Sheppard will be moved for a draft pick and because he will be moved after the signing of Samuel, his value may have dropped. Teams will know the Eagles are definitely looking to shop him now.
The Eagles also expect to improve the defense tomorrow by signing free-agent defensive-end, Chris Clemons. Clemons is a little under-sized, but he had 8 sacks last year in 16 games, but only started 2 games. He primarily played outside linebacker in the Raiders 3-4 defense. Clemons' agent Don Henderson, made it sound like the Eagles may be his only team he'll visit.
"They're the first team we're going to visit, and maybe the last," Henderson said. "We're excited about Chris coming to Philadelphia."Clemons could be a nice boost, but I think he's a little small to be a full-time starting defensive-end. He'll likely be their defensive end in passing situations as he as a good burst of speed off the end.
In a series of moves today, the Eagles cut former pro-bowl defensive end, Jevon Kearse, signed safety, J.R. Reed to a one-year contract, and gave cornerback, Joselio Hanson, a one-year tender offer. If another club signs Hanson to an offer sheet, the Eagles have seven days to match it. If the Eagles fail to do so, they will receive a second-round pick as compensation.
Jevon Kearse played 4 seasons with the Eagles, but missed 19 games during that span and never had more than 7 1/2 sacks in a season.
This was move we all knew was going to happen. Kearse in-efficient play during much of his Eagles career has been criticized with the rest of the Eagles' lack of defensive pressure. Kearse would have been due around 8 million if he played and his cap hit for his release will be somewhat around 4 million.
With regard to Reed, he played well enough last year to earn a tryout in training camp to make the team full time as a back-up safety. Hanson is slotted to be the teams nickel cornerback next season.
The long-awaited announcement finally took place as the MLS awarded Philadelphia an expansion team that will begin play in 2010. The team will play in a new 20,000 seat stadium in Chester, PA.
"We are thrilled to welcome Philadelphia to Major League Soccer," said Commissioner Garber. "Philadelphia brings in one of the most passionate sports markets in the country and provides a natural rivalry with the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United.Personally, I think this great news for a city that embraces all their professional sport franchises and even race horses. I am surprised that Philadelphia was not awarded a franchise sooner, but their indoor team, the Kixx, has two championships since 2002 and has led the league in attendance three times. The new franchise should have no problem filling seats.
The MLS Philadelphia club will play their home matches in a 20,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Chester, just 13 miles from downtown Philadelphia and easily accessible from Interstate 95 and public transportation via the R2 SEPTA train and SEPTA buses.
Quarterback:
2007: For having such a heavily criticized season, Donovan McNabb had his 3rd best quarterback rating in his career with 89.9. His best play however came in between the 20s as he and the rest of the team struggled greatly inside the “Red Zone”. Inside the “Red Zone”, McNabb only completed 48% of his passes and threw only 12 touchdowns in 69 attempts. Donovan McNabb also did not have one rushing touchdown at all last year. Some would argue that McNabb did not have a premier red zone target, and while that was true, his decision making was definitely poorer in red zone situations. McNabb did finally look healthy in December and it led to the Eagles owning a 3-1 record during the month. The biggest question is whether or not McNabb will ever be or remain 100% healthy.
AJ Feeley has a little above average game against New England, but it tends to force throws. If McNabb goes down again you have to think that Kolb is going to get more of an opportunity to play rather than Feeley. You have to know what you’re going to have after McNabb’s either moved or his contract ends in 2010.
Draft or Free Agency: I would not expect the Eagles to address the quarterback position through the draft or free agency.
Running Back:
2007: Brian Westbrook proved that he is a top 5 back in the league with 1,333 yards rushing, 2,104 total yards, and 12 total TD’s. Westbrook also set a franchise record with 90 receptions. Correll Buckhalter backed him up with 313 yards and 4 TD’s. Tony Hunt was rarely used as the third back. I’d expect Westbrook to be used more often in 2008…or I at least hope so.
Draft or Free Agency: I think the Eagles still lack their short yardage back and hurt them in the red zone last year, specifically, in the game against Seattle where they failed to score at the end of the half. I’d expect them to grab a guy if he is there, but personally I’d like to give a more experienced guy another shot. I’d expect Ryan Moats to be released this year.
Wide Receiver:
2007: What an ironic season for this group of wide receivers? In a season where they were criticized so much, we saw Kevin Curtis put up one of the best single-seasons in recent Eagles history. Curtis finished the season with 77 receptions, 1,110 yards, and 6 touchdowns. The disappointment of last year was Reggie Brown who finished with 61 receptions, but only 780 yards and 4 TDs. The Eagles offense really suffered with the lack of a downfield threat. Kevin Curtis is a good route runner. Brown can get open, but neither has the ability to get separation downfield. The tight end position was virtually nonexistent this season for the Eagles and that put a lot more pressure on the wide receivers as teams could focus less on the normal over the middle routes for a West Coast Offense tight end. Jason Avant developed into a somewhat decent slot receiver, but he’d have some good games and not get a catch in another.
Draft or Free Agency: Personally, I expect the Eagles to address this position whether it is through the draft or free agency. Some rumored names have been Randy Moss (who is likely to re-sign with New England) and Javon Walker who is coming off an injury plagued year and is likely to be cut. If the Eagles miss out on these guys, they could look at Bernard Berrian (Bears) and Bryant Johnson (Cardinals), but I’d expect them to look hard at Andre Davis (Texans) who is a downfield threat, but also a near-premier kick-off returnman. In the draft, if the Eagles want to go for a WR early, I’d expect them to look at Limas Sweed (Texas) and Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma) who are both guys with size. If they’re looking for a downfield threat/returnman, I’d expect them to look at Dexter Jackson from Appalachian State in a later round.
Offensive Line:
2007: The Offensive Line gave up far too many sacks (49) last season, but they did well in the rushing game (4.7 yards per carry). Against the Giants they allowed 12 sacks in one game, largely due to Winston Justice who replaced William Thomas for the game. The consistency of the line varied as they had some series where McNabb virtually had no time to throw at all.
Draft or Free Agency: I expect the Eagles first round pick to be another offensive lineman. Jeff Otah (Pittsburgh) and Chris Williams (Vanderbilt) are two guys the Eagles may look at if they fall to them. Both William Thomas and Jon Runyan are free agents after next season. Through free agency, the Eagles could go after guards Alan Faneca (Pittsburgh) or Jake Scott (Indianapolis) which would likely push Herremans or Andrews outside to tackle.
Defensive Line:
2007: The Eagles were tied for 9th in sacks last season with 37, largely due to Trent Cole’s career best 12.5. Against the rush, the Eagles were 8th in the league only allowing 3.8 yards per carry. Mike Patterson had 4 sacks and led all defensive tackles in tackles. Broderick Bunkley may very well turn into that stud we expected on draft day, but he has yet to become that sack-hungry defensive tackle he was at Florida State. The biggest disappointments on the line were high-priced Jevon Kearse and Darren Howard. Howard had 1 sack on the season and only 8 total tackles. Kearse will likely be cut and it is rumored that Howard will likely see a lot of time at defensive tackle.
Draft or Free Agency: I expect the Eagles to address the defensive end position once again. One guy they may look at is Justin Smith (Bengals) who had a down year last year, but he makes a lot of tackles and averages around 7.5 sacks a season. After drafting Abiamiri last year, I would not expect the Eagles to draft another defensive end.
Linebacker:
2007: The linebacker corps was a huge surprise last year. Omar Gaither proved that letting Jeremiah Trotter was not that bad of a choice, as he tried his best to become that defensive leader the Eagles lacked without Trotter and oft-injured Dawkins. He led the team with 102 tackles. I think Gaither’s future with the team will likely be at weak-side linebacker, however. Takeo Spikes was second with 86 and proved to be a good acquisition. Chris Gocong was solid, but he needs to his ability to cover tight ends. When Stewart Bradley was given a shot, he did very well. Bradley could wind up being the middle linebacker of the future.
Draft or Free Agency: I do not expect the Eagles to address this position at all because they like back-up Akeem Jordan. They may add a veteran for depth, but I would not expect anything to change the starting line-backer look.
Defensive Backs:
2007: Let’s face it, they didn’t cause turnovers. It didn’t help with Lito Sheppard, Sean Considine, Brian Dawkins, and Will James all missing games at points. Sheldon Brown and Quinten Mikell led the secondary in tackles with 68 and 74 respectively. Lito Sheppard failed to be the shut down corner he is supposed to be, as he would often be off the field, even if he started the game, because of injury. Brown had only 3 interceptions while Sheppard had 2. A lot of the secondary’s inefficiencies were due to the lack of consistent defensive pressure from the front seven, but the Eagles overall were 10th in passing yards allowed, which isn’t too bad.
Draft or Free Agency: The Eagles are rumored to be looking to sign Asante Samuel (Patriots), but there has been recent talk that he’ll sign with New Orleans. If the Eagles don’t sign Samuel, they’re expected to make a run a Safety Gibril Wilson (Giants) to play safety and take over for Dawkins as this is likely his final season. As far as the draft goes, if the Eagles look to go defensive back in the first round, they should look at corner Aqib Talib (Kansas), Mike Jenkins (South Florida), and Dominique Rogers-Cromartie (Tennessee St.). A few mock drafts predict them to select Rogers-Cromartie. If they want to reach on a safety in the first round, they can look at Kenny Phillips (Miami).
Special Teams:
2007: The Eagles Kick-off coverage has been horrible over the last few years as they often give their opponent great starting field position. Some of that can be attributed to David Akers less powerful foot, but most of it can be attributed to the special team talent they have lacked over the years. With regard to punt coverage, the Eagles net punt average was 36.4 yards, which stood as 28th ranked in the league. Some of it had to do with Rocca only averaging 42 yards a punt, but the other half of it had to do with their poor coverage. As far as Akers goes, I hate to break it to Eagles fans, but I think his time as a kicker is starting to come to an end. Akers made only 75% of his kicks last season and was 2-10 from 40 yards or more. As far as the return game goes, it is nonexistent for the Eagles in both kickoffs and punt returns.
Draft or Free Agency: You have to expect that the Eagles will address the return game with a non-project type player in either free agency or the draft. I mean, they have to right? It has become a damn shame that the Eagles coaching staff undervalues the return game so much. I’m not sure if Rocca is exactly the answer as the punter and I’d expect the Eagles will bring someone in to compete for a job. If the Eagles are done with Akers, they could look at Josh Brown (Seattle) or Rod Bironas (Tennessee) who is a restricted free-agent.
Overall, the Eagles definitely have some holes to fill, but they were ranked top ten in both team offense and defense. A lot of bounces did not go their way last season and you hope those things change.
Brett Myers has been named the Phillies opening day starter and Cole Hamels is perfectly okay with it. Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee selected Brett Myers as the opening day starter, not only to get Myers focused on becoming a starter again, but also to set the rotation up with a righty and a lefty.
"We wanted to set our rotation up with a righty and lefty," Manuel said. "We lined the rotation up the way we wanted to go. I talked to Hamels and he seemed like OK with it. I told him he was our No. 1 starter last year and had a big year. That's the way we wanted to set our rotation up."It appears that Kyle Kendrick will be third in the rotation followed by Jamie Moyer and Adam Eaton.
"The only thing that played into it was how we wanted to go," Manuel said. "To me, we have two guys who are pretty equal and we can go either way. Both of them to me are No. 1."And get this, Hamels actually prefers to be second in the rotation right now.
"It's not a big deal to me," Hamels said. "It just gives me two days off. My understanding going into Spring Training was to go out and play. I wasn't [sure if] I was going to be the No. 1 guy because Brett was coming back, and I like the fact that he is coming back. He and I can work off one another."The way it is setting up, Hamels will likely match-up against Santana and the other aces in the National League during the first month anyway. I don't mind it, and maybe it will boost Myers confidence and preparation for the 2008 season. We all know what we're going to get out of Hamels, but Myers return to the rotation is somewhat of a question. Once you get into the schedule of pitching every 5 days, it doesn't even matter anyway.
"There's a lot of hype that goes with Opening Day, and for myself, it's not a big deal," Hamels said. "I have plenty of years; I'm trying to chase after Jamie Moyer. Eventually I'll get one of those. I haven't really been involved in Major League Baseball for too many years. It'll be my third year, and second year going into the season for Opening Day. It's all new to me still."
The 76ers started the game shooting 15 of 17 to jump out to an early lead and they never looked back. When their shooting started to cool down, their defense started to pick up to give the Sixers a 102-89 victory over the Orlando Magic. Andre Miller and Willie Green led the Sixers with 26 points each. Miller also added 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Willie Green added 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Andre Iguodala added 24 points in 7 assists.
When Andre Miller was on the floor the Sixers were +20 in scoring and what about the kid? When Thaddeus Young was on the court, the Sixers were a +17. Samuel Dalembert and Reggie Evans gave up some rebounds to Dwight Howard, but they only allowed him to score 14 points.
The 76ers have been playing great team basketball and that has led to them winning 10 their last 14, 8 of their last 10, and 7 straight at home. They now currently hold the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference, 1/2 game up on the Nets and 1 1/2 games back of the Wizards for the 6th seed. The Sixers are beginning to get not only hot at the right time, but more consistent from game to game.
Tonight, the Flyers battled back from an early 3 goal deficit to earn their first victory in their last eleven tries. The Flyers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 with a shoot-out victory as Daniel Briere scored the shoot-out winner in his former home arena.
Derek Roy and Clarke MacArthur took advantage of two Flyer's turnovers and scored 11 seconds apart. Immediately after MacArthur's goal, coach John Stevens called a time-out. Eight minutes later, Jason Pomminville scored to put the Sabres up 3-0, but Jeff Carter quickly scored a break-away goal due to a pretty pass from Mike Knuble 17 seconds later. Less than 2 minutes later, Scott Hartnell scored his 20th goal on the season. The score remained 3-2 until RJ Umberger tied to the game on the power-play with a little more than 7 minutes left in the third.
Both team were held scoreless through the rest of regulation and overtime. Ales Kotalik scored for Buffalo in the shoot-out. Carter and Briere scored for the Flyers. It seemed fitting that the Flyers earned their first shoot-out win on the season, previously 0-4, to end their 10 game losing streak.
If you missed the game, you can watch the replay tomorrow on Versus at 5 PM.
Tough games ahead when they host Ottawa on Thursday and then face both NY team this weekend.
The Flyers acquired center Vinny Prospal from the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman Alexandre Picard and a second or third round draft pick in 2009. [TSN]
Prospal currently has 29 goals and 57 points through 62 games. The thirty-three year old centered the line of he Lecavalier and St. Louis.
Picard is a 22-year old defenseman who was a third-round pick by the Flyers in 2003. He is a restricted free agent in the off-season and he became expendable with the signing of Kimmo Timonen and the emergence of Braydon Coburn, Randy Jones, and Ryan Parent. Picard was second on the Phantoms in scoring with 38 points (8 goals, 30 assists) in 53 games.
Prospal on his return to the team who drafted him:
"It is something that I kind of expected - not to go to Philadelphia - but being traded," Prospal said in a release. "My name has been mentioned all around the paper and there has been a lot of rumours. They had a decision to make and they basically dealt me away.I'd expect Prospal to likely play alongside Briere and Umberger until Mike Richards and Joffrey Lupul return."I am glad that I am going to an organization that I already have been involved with. Philadelphia is a great place to play because they have awesome fans and I was drafted by Philadelphia, so I am basically coming back to where I started."
It was a tale of two halves. On Senior night (though Senior-less), Villanova fell to Marquette 85-75 at the Wachovia Center. The biggest problem for Villanova was too many turnovers, 23 to be exact, in the game. Another problem has been freshman guard, Corey Fisher's lack of discipline as he tries to attempt terrible shots and undisciplined passes.
This loss extremely puts a dent in their battle back into National Tournament contention, but they're not exactly dead yet. They will have to win their next three games against Louisville, South Florida, and Providence.
Put away your Peter Forsberg jerseys, well unless you own an Avalanche version, because he has just sign with Colorado according to TSN. He has signed a year deal to return for the rest of the season.
"Over the last several months, I have worked extremely hard in order for this to be possible. I am looking forward to putting this jersey on again," said Forsberg. "I have so many great memories of my playing days in Denver. I'm excited about helping my new teammates and former teammates in the coming weeks, and hopefully I am able to do that in the very near future."
This should be almost dead news because Flyers' fans pretty much knew he wasn't going to return with us and their recent tailspin definitely ended those chances. As far as trading before tomorrow's deadline, I still do not believe it is not worth it for the Flyers to mortgage their future for some rental player because we'd be getting back into the way Bobby Clarke ran things and well all know what that did for us. Absolutely nothing.
We all remember this event. Hopefully, Boulerice keeps is temper tamed from now on. Boulerice will take Richards' roster spot, but hopefully not for long. He doesn't really offer anything more than being a "tough guy."
The Philadelphia Inquirer suggests that the Eagles may look into signing Safety Gibril Wilson who was not given the franchise tag by the New York Giants. The addition of Wilson would be a lot cheaper than adding Asante Samuel, which will likely cost $10-12 million per year and a signing bonus around $20 million.
Adding 26-year old Wilson, would give the Eagles flexibility in the draft because there are not many quality safeties, but there are few first-round talented corners. Another plus, is that Wilson has knowledge of Jim Johnson's system because he played for Steve Spagnoulo, a former Eagles assistant.
Even if Dawkins is completely healthy and returns to form this year, Wilson would likely play alongside of him because Considine is nothing special and Mikell, though makes plays, is not really a full-time starter. Wilson was somewhat a defensive playmaker last year with 4 interceptions. I think he'd be a nice pick-up for the Eagles.

Phillies newly acquired closer, Brad Lidge, is scheduled to have arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee Monday and could miss the regular-season opener. The surgery will likely sideline him for 3 to 6 weeks.
"Ideally, if everything went right I wouldn't miss any of the season because that would be four weeks," Lidge said. "But that will be based on how it feels."Charlie Manuel said Tom Gordon will be the closer if Lidge misses any time. If someone was going to get hurt, it is better off being the closer. Hopefully the offense can string along some 11-4 wins so Lidge will not even be necessary. We'll see what happens though. Let's pray for the best and hope Ed Wade has not find another way to fuck the Phillies.
"Right now, if we had to do this during the season, then obviously you're missing a big chunk of the season," Lidge said. "I definitely need a few bullpen sessions, but I feel like my arm is ahead of schedule so after a week I should be able to throw again."

Yesterday, Villanova ended the UConn Huskies 10-game winning streak with a 67-65 victory. The Senior-less Wildcats are really starting to grow up recently and they've credited the loss to Georgetown. Villanova is back to .500 in the Big East and hold a 17-9 overall record. If they can win 3 of their next 4 games and do well in the Big East tournament, they could find themselves possibly receiving an at-large bid in the NCAA tournament even after suffering a 5 game losing streak this season and have 2 losses arguably determined by two horrible calls.
Freshman Corey Stokes and sophomore Scottie Reynolds led the Wildcats with 18 points each as Villanova led for most of the game. Villanova hosts Marquette tomorrow night at the Wachovia Center.
While one Snider lead franchise is falling from the playoffs, another one is trying to get into the playoffs. Last night, the Sixers rallied back in overtime to defeat the Miami Heat for the third time this season 101-96 in overtime. The Sixers scored the final ten points in overtime to hand the Heat their 11th straight loss.
"We could have easily just given in, but we fought through it," Miller said. "We found a way to dig it out."Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala combined for 48 points and 15 assists. Iguodala nearly had a triple-double, but he was one assist shy [24 pts, 12 boards, 9 assists].
The Flyers were just seconds away from earning their first win in their last ten attempts, but they gave another game away as Jay Bouwmeester floated the puck in with 3.7 seconds and it somehow found the back of the net to force overtime. Olli Jokinen scored the game-winner on the power play with a little over a minute left in the over-time period to defeat the Flyers 2-1. The Flyers are now 0-8-2 in their last 10. The Flyers lone goal was scored by Daniel Briere on the power play.
That game result was not the only loss that the Flyers would feel as they lost Assistant captain and young star, Mike Richards, to a torn hamstring. The injury will force him to miss around three weeks.
The ten game losing streak ties the worst in franchise history. What should the Flyers do? I know we all want to see the playoffs this year, but I am not sure if a move they make for a rental is worth it. The Flyers need to keep their young core together and they should not make any moves unless they can sign their acquired player to a long-term deal. This is only the second or third time in Flyers history where the team has had to rebuild. I prefer Paul Holmgren not to make any Bobby Clark type moves to mortgage the future. I think the Flyers only real expendable player right now is Jeff Carter and he could bring in some talent. I'm tired of watching his pathetic attempts on breakaways, but realistically he is a restricted free-agent in the off-season and I am not sure the Flyers want to re-sign him. Lets not forget he was virtually traded with a first round pick to Toronto for Thomas Kaberle a few days ago, but Kaberle refused to waive his no-trade clause. There's 20 games left on the season. If we don't see some wins, I'd like to see some heart out of this team.
Jevon Kearse's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed that the Eagles will be releasing the defensive end. Rosenhaus said that they wanted to restructure his contract with the Eagles, but they were unsuccessful.
“Yeah, we expect Jevon to be released,” Rosenhaus said outside the media room at the NFL scouting combine. “I expect Jevon to be a free agent. We tried to work out a [contract] restructure with the Eagles. We thought he had a wonderful career there, they’re a great organization. We weren’t able to do it.”
[Wilmington News Journal]
We all knew that Jevon Kearse would most likely be released after his injury-plagued career with the Eagles. I don't mind the move at all with Kearse owed a lot of money and also getting up in age. I'd also love to see Darren Howard released as well, along with McDougle. They certainly need to address the position in the offseason. Trent Cole is a stud, but there is not any emerging stars currently on the roster to play opposite of him. Juqua Thomas has some spurts, but he's not a full-time starter. I'd expect them to look at a mid-level free-agent or possibly Justin Smith who had a down year last season with the Bengals.
Phillies closer, Brad Lidge, limped off the field this morning after he caught his spike in the mound while throwing live batting practice.
Lidge had just started to throw batting practice when he stopped after he threw a pitch. Manager Charlie Manuel, pitching coach Rich Dubee and athletic trainer Scott Sheridan conferred with Lidge on the mound. Lidge then limped back into the Phillies' clubhouse with Sheridan.Apparently, the injury is not serious, but Lidge did feel some irritation in his right knee, which he had surgery on to repair torn cartilage. He has previously said that the knee is not 100%, but he'd be able to pitch opening day.
Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson was arrested Saturday and charged with marijuana possession after cops found a mother vehicle on the side of the road with damage caused by a minor accident. The police said they smelt burning marijuana coming from inside and Patterson admitted it was his. Keep in mind, this all this took place around 6 a.m.
He was with his brother, Tyrone, who has several outstanding warrants for his arrest and police said Tyrone resisted arrest. Mike Patterson was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams and released pending a court appearance. [Camden Courier Post]
I wonder what Goodell and his Gustapo will do with this. I think it is safe to assume Patterson will see some type of fine or suspension, but as far as we know, it is only his first offense. I think it'll be funny if he gets 4 games similar to Shawn Merriman and Rodney Harrison who were suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs. Whatever Patterson does get because of this is warranted and hopefully it also involves and ass-kicking from Brian Dawkins.
The Flyers have claimed Patrick Thoreson off waivers from Edmonton. Thoreson is a 24 year old forward. He currently has two goals and one assist with a minus-14 rating in 17 games.
Not sure how this move helps at all, but maybe it could turn out to be something nice.
TSN's Scouting Report on Thoreson:
Assets: Oozes hockey sense. Has enough versatility to play anywhere up front. Owns both two-way ability and offensive skill.
Flaws: Is a little on the smallish side (5'11"/188 lbs) and must adjust to the more aggressive game in the big league. Is more of a play-maker than goal-scorer.
Career potential: Top six forward.
If he really is a true two-way forward, that could be a big lift for this team. I wonder who's spot he'll replace in the line-up. Hopefully not Giroux, at least not yet.
Update: Thoreson seems like a guy with issues. Here is a Norwegian interview he had recently.
Right now I'm irritated and frustrated. I feel that Edmonton has given up on me. It's over here now since they they're sacrificing me like this.
There was a lot of talk, but it was all bullsh1t. They pissed on me. I played well. The explanation was that others needed match practice.
-Do you feel you're good enough for Edmonton?
-I'm not in doubt for half a second.
-How do you then explain that they waived you?
-The NHL is all politics. Everything is about the highly drafted players. I'm not drafted, and do not have a high profile.
We'll have to see if anyone else wants me. My agent is making calls. I don't know what will happen.
-What do you think the chances are that someone will claim you in the next 2 hours?
-20 per cent.
The Flyers lost their ninth in a row last night. What's to blame? Bad defense, failed clears, few quality scoring chances, suddenly weak powerplay, unlucky bounces, bad officiating, bad coaching. John Stevens game plan has not seemed to work and it looks like most teams are starting to understand the blueprint for beating the Flyers. Recently, the Flyers have a lot of trouble entering the other teams zone. Also, the Flyers have been a lot less aggressive in their own zone recently in terms of their tough play. Hopefully, they rebound soon because currently they are out of the playoffs and sitting in last place.
Also, the leadership question is starting to come into effect. The Flyers have often taken far too many stupid penalties. If Stevens needs to bench a guy for a game to wake him up, he should do so. It is past the point of starting to get ugly.
ESPN has reported that Ryan Howard has won his arbitration case and the Phillies will have to pay him $10 million for the 2008 season, the highest figure ever awarded to a victorious player and it ties the arbitration record of Alfonso Soriano in 2006.
The Phillies were previously 7-0 in prior arbitration cases.
So, what does this mean for the future. I'd like think that Ryan Howard understands that from a business perspective and the past, $7 million, was relatively the correct number that the Phillies should have offered. Personally, I think if they offered closer to $8 million, or at least higher than Miguel Cabrera's $7.4 million, the backlash would likely not be as bad. Ryan Howard has never given any real signs that he'd like to remain with the Phillies after 2011.
Also, no player has ever been awarded this type of money, with this little of service time. There is no map for the type of long-term money he'll likely see. My prediction is that if he is not signed to a long-term deal before next season, the Phillies will likely keep him through 2011 and then move him.
I know, who is Northwood University? Well, Northwood is my alma mater. It is a small private school in Palm Beach, Florida. Anyway, my school won their second straight conference title and they've only been a program for two years.
What's the Philly connection? Their head coach is former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino. They are currently ranked 13th in NAIA.
Tonight, the Flyers host the San Jose Sharks who come into Philadelphia losers of 5 straight. Our Flyers have lost 8 straight. Someone has to win tonight, right? Currently, the Flyers sit in the 8th playoff spot as both they and Buffalo have 66 points. There are 22 games left in the season, so the playoff scenarios are far from over.
Newly acquired defenseman Jaroslav Modry will likely make his Flyers debut tonight wearing the #25.
As the Sharks come to visit, a former Flyer favorite, Jeremy Roenick, makes his return to the Wachovia Center. What was your favorite Roenick moment? I think this was mine.
Last night, the 76ers absolutely dominated the New York Knickerbockers with a 124-84 victory. The Sixers had 102 after three-quarters. It was so bad that the Knicks fans who traveled to the game and some Sixers fans chanted "Fire Isiah!"
The Sixers had 9 players that played at least 20 minutes and not one player played more than 32 minutes. It was an all-around team effort. For the game, the Sixers had 36 fast-break points and 16 steals, 20 of those points came in the first quarter. It seemed like almost every other possession the Knicks were turning the ball over as they had 23 on the game.
Rookie Thaddeus Young had a career-high 20 points on 8-11 shooting to go along with 8 rebounds all off the bench as Reggie Evans got the start against Knick forward Zach Randolph. The Sixers starters shot 60% from the field.
They return to action Friday when they travel to Orlando. The Sixers currently remain in up a game on Atlanta for the 8th and final playoff spot.
In other news, GM Ed Stefanski said that there are no Sixers trades in the works before today's 3PM deadline.
"There's no deal on the table now that anyone should get excited about and think we're going to make," said Stefanski, the president/general manager.
The Sixers and coach Maurice Cheeks agreed to a one year contract extension Wednesday, giving him until the 2008-09 season to get Philly back in the playoffs.
“Coach Cheeks has done a very good job of installing an up-tempo brand of basketball that puts this team in a position to succeed on a nightly basis and we are excited about the future under his direction, Sixers president Ed Stefanski said.
He's a good coach in my opinion. He has this team set to win. They are a much better team without AI. Giving him another year will allow him more time with a better team.
I'm not an NBA buff but I figured this was important news.
Flyers LW Simon Gagne will miss the remainder of the regular season after consulting concussion specialist Dr. Jim Kelly.
“His advice to Simon was to shut it down for the remainder of the season,” general manager Paul Holmgren said via e-mail. “Needless to say, we are very disappointed with this news."
Rejoice fans. The Flyers have shipped defenseman Jim Vandermeer off to Calgary for a 2009 third round pick.
I think the entire city just got a little happier. In his short time here, Vandermeer was often criticized for his pathetic play on defense.
The Sixers have agreed to an extension with head coach Maurice Cheeks. It is only a one-year contract extension.
Good move by Stefanski.
Today, Ryan Howard and the Philadelphia Phillies will have their arbitration hearing. Ryan Howard has asked for $10 million and the Phillies were willing to pay $7 million.
"Maybe people are worried that I'm not all flipping out and that kind of stuff," Howard said as he slipped on his cleats prior to the Phillies' first official full-squad workout. "I'm just staying calm right now."He did not exactly assure the Phillies fan base that he'll be here for years to come [after his arbitration years], but he didn't exactly say that the result of the hearing would have a negative effect.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer,
The 76ers and head coach Maurice Cheeks are nearing a contract extension as he is in the last year of his three-year deal. His overall record with the Sixers is 96-127.
I don't mind this move. I know Cheeks is not one of the great coaches out there, but he is a guy that the team wants to play for. Some of his misfortune has a lot to do with the 76ers rebuilding process that is currently on. If the Sixers finally find a real power forward, they will become a lock for the playoffs for years to come, at least because it is the Eastern Conference.
The 76ers 5-game win streak ended last night against the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves. They hope to bounce back against the lowly Knicks tonight.
I'm sorry, I have no analysis on this game because I was watching the Flyers game.
The Flyers lost for the eighth straight time last night, this time via the shoot-out. The Flyers battled back from a two goal deficit to tie the game early in the third period. The Flyers saw goals from Kimmo Timonen [SH] on a pretty pass from RJ Umberger and Scottie Upshall when he deflected a Jim Dowd shot.
The officials in the game were absolutely atrocious. Lasse Kukkonen was cut on two different occasions from a high-stick, Jeff Carter was hooked on a break-away, and in over-time a Flyer player tripped a Senator and there was no call. I am actually at the point where I don't want to watch the games because of the officiating. The referees make between 100,000 and 200,000 a year. It is starting to look like they are too slow for the game.
Claude Giroux looked like he could become a special player after a somewhat shaky first period. Stevens awarded him with the first attempt in the shoot-out. Daniel Briere is continuing his woes as he completely whiffed on his shoot-out attempt. Timonen scored a shootout goal for the Flyers. Jason Spezza's shoot-out goal won it for the Senators.
At least they got a point. They're back in action tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks.
Lito Sheppard has denied requesting a trade. In fact, he thought it was a joke.
After a report surfaced that Sheppard is seeking a trade from the Eagles, Comcast SportsNet’s Derrick Gunn called the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback to seek its validity.[Comcast Sportsnet]
“He told me he knew nothing about this,” Gunn said Monday on the 6:30 p.m. SportsNite. “As a matter of fact, he thought I was joking until he realized that I wasn’t.”

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jaroslav Modry for an undisclosed draft pick. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Modry is 36 years old. He has 1G, 5A and is a minus 2 on the season.
Hopefully this means Kukkonen or Vandermeer will be benched. I'd like them to keep up Ryan Parent, but we'll see.
After analyzing the infield and outfield, we are now taking a look at the Phillies 2008 starting rotation. All salary information will come from Cot's Baseball Contracts. All stats are 162 game averages, unless otherwise noted.
Ace - Cole Hamels (0.4M [2007]) - 210 innings, 16-8, 3.68 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 214 Ks, 60 BBs, 29 HRs/Career Averages - 9.18 K/9, 3.54 K/BB, 1.06 GB/FB, .237 OAvg, .702 OPS
Cole Hamels is everything you look for in an ace. He has a very good strikeout ratio and a fairly low WHIP. When he does give up home runs, they are generally solo home runs because he left his change-up. His fastball has natural movement that goes in on right-handed batters. Sometimes his command is off though and he'll have a 5 walk game. Hamels has continued to try to perfect a 12 to 6 curveball that he added during last spring training. If he gets to the point where he is comfortable to use the curveball anywhere in the count, he may become even more dominating. I'd like to see Cole get a few more groundballs in our park, but when he does have his change-up down, he is getting Ks, so it evens out.
Projection: 34 starts, 203 innings, 16-6, 3.21 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 195 Ks
02 - Brett Myers (8.5M) - [187 innings, 11-9, 4.34 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 156 Ks, 65 BBs, 26 HRs] Of course his stats are skewed a little because of his role last year. Career Averages - 7.54 K/9, 2.38 K/BB, 1.48 GB/FB, .260 OAvg, .759 OPS.
The funny thing about Brett Myers is that his game starts to get rocky around the 5th-6th inning. For most of his career, he averages about 5.2 innings a start. Myers strike-out per 9 ratio has risen over the last few years and it is hard to believe he only turns 28 in August (7th season). In his last two years as a starter, Myers posted good numbers and I'd expect similar success. He also has the mentality that you'd like to see on the mound. The guy just flat out loves to pitch and play the game and he'd do it every game if he could. At times, he leaves his curve ball up a little and it gets taking deep.
Projection: 32 starts, 175 innings, 14-8, 4.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 190 Ks
03 - Kyle Kendrick - 2007 - 10-4, 3.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 49 Ks, 25 BB, 16 HR, 3.65 K/9, 1.96 K/BB, 1.55 GB/FB, .280 OAvg, .772 OPS
If Kyle Kendrick pitched a full year last year with similar success, his numbers would have looked like this: 205.7 innings, 17-6, 83 Ks, 42 BB. Don't expect those numbers. Kyle Kendrick's K/9 are incredibly low for a major league pitcher and that should throw up a red flag. In his second season, teams will now have more scouting reports on the young pitcher. Kyle Kendrick lacks a true out pitch and that can come back to hurt him with runners on base. Some positives from Kendrick is the incredible amount of ground balls he forces. With an improved defense behind him, Kendrick may see some more outs that he didn't see last year. If he can continue to have the same command, I'd expect similar to a little lower numbers than last year. I'd also expect Kendrick to be fatigued with his extended amount of innings over this season.
Prediction - 27 starts, 155 innings, 13-9, 4.35 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 90 K
04 - Jamie Moyer (3.5M) - 209 innings, 13-10, 4.21 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 125 Ks, 59 BBs, 26 HRs. Career Averages - 5.39 K/9, 2.10 K/BB, 1.11 GB/FB, .267 OAvg, .821 OPS
I think we are looking at the end of the road for Jamie Moyer this year. Ironically, his K/9 were above his career average last year, but his K/BB was below which means his command is not what it used to be. For a guy with nothing, but command, this could spell problems. Moyer was hit pretty hard last year. He was also very poor on the road last year: 6-8 5.25 ERA compared to 8-4 4.72 at home. Moyer benefited greatly from our offense last season. Put it this way, whether he is third or fourth in the rotation, you will likely see #5 starter's numbers.
Projection - 34 starts, 205 innings, 12-11, 4.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 115 Ks
05 - Adam Eaton (7.365M) - 198.7 innings, 12-10, 4.70 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 148 Ks, 73 BBs, 27 HR. Career Averages - 6.72 K/9, 2.02 K/BB, 1.07 GB/FB, .267 AVG, .776 OPS.
Over the last two seasons, Adam Eaton has seen his strike-outs fall and his walks rise. He has also seen teams have an OPS of .870 of him the last two seasons. And the Phillies gave him a $24 million deal over three years. Dear Pat Gillick, do you have a mind? or heart? The Adam Eaton signing was literally one of the dumbest moves in the history of baseball, but enough of that. What to expect from him? I couldn't tell you, but you have to think he cannot get any worse. He had a stretch in May where he pitched well, so hopefully he can find out what he did well. His only positive: He has never lost to the Mets. Yes, the Adam Eaton we have all come to dislike, has never been beaten by the Mets. Shocking. I will project him as if he would make 34 starts.
Projection (if he remains 5th starter) - 175 innings, 11-14, 5.30 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 155 Ks
The Other Guys!
Kris Benson (Anywhere from 100K to 5.1 M) - 210.3, 11-12, 4.34 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 137 K, 73 BBs, 25 HR. Career Averages - 5.87 K/9, 1.86 K/BB, 1.23 GB/FB, .267 OAvg, .749 OPS.
Benson has not pitched since 2006. He has only made more than 30 starts 4 times in his 7 year career. I am not sure what to expect with Benson. I don't mind the move because it is low risk, but it is not exactly high reward. Benson is another guy that relies on contact and has seen his strike outs fall and his walks rise. Maybe I am clueless as a fan, but I think the Phillies need two types of pitches. 1 - A pitcher with a high strike-out ratio. 2 - A pitcher similar to Kyle Kendrick with a sinker that forces a lot of ground balls. Benson is neither, but I don't want to discount the move. He could turn out to be a little better than average. If Benson makes 30 starts, his deal will be worth $5.1M. I will project his stats if he starts the season in the rotation, though I feel it to be very unlikely.
Projection - 34 starts, 175 inn, 12-11, 4.65 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 115 K
Chad Durbin (0.9M) - 167 inn, 8-13, 5.75 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 95 K, 69 BB, 28 HR. Career Averages - 5.13 K/9, 1.37 K/BB, 1.08 GB/FB, .288 OAvg, .836 OPS.
You should expect Durbin to primarily be used as a middle reliever where he posted okay to decent numbers last year. However, I would expect him to make 7-10 spot starts. You never know what you'll get with him. To be honest, he's just not good as a starter. There is no way to truly be rationale and say he'll put together a good stretch of starts.
Projection for 10 starts - 59 innings, 3-5, 5.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 30 K
Starting Rotation Decisions with Eaton - 69-53
Starting Rotation Decisions with Benson - 70-51
If the Phillies starters can find a way to win around 75 decisions, they should be in very good shape this season with regard to the division. If they win only 65 decisions, I'd expect around third place in the division. According to my projections, I see their starters taking them through another wild card race.
The 700 Level found this nice little video of Claude Giroux.
John Stevens says Giroux may get an opportunity to play alongside Briere. Stefan Ruzicka has also been called up. [Flyers]
Currently the Flyers are 7th in the conference and 4th in the Atlantic.
The Philadelphia Eagles have given permission to cornerback Lito Sheppard to seek a trade because he is unhappy with his current contract. The current contract that paid him while he missed 15 games since 2003.
A shocker. Sheppard hasn't completed a 16-game season since 2003, but is only 26 and the Birds' best cover corner when healthy. Philadelphia would take a $2.9 million cap hit to move him. The Eagles are not deep at cornerback, so it's unclear how they'd atone for losing the two-time All Pro. They will probably only make a deal if they get a bounty in return.
According to TSN, Peter Forsberg is not returning to the NHL this year.''The prospect of Peter having enough confidence in the foot-skate issue to commit to being able to play in the NHL this season isn't where it needs to be at this moment,'' Baizley told TSN. ''As a result, teams are being told it is unlikely he will be able to commit to return to the NHL this season.''

From the Toronto Sun:
"The last I heard is Peter is going to decide probably by (tomorrow) whether he's going to play," Holmgren said yesterday.
Many media outlets have said the same thing, but I am not sure if it'll ever happen with all the recent talk. I've also read reports that he will likely not sign with the Flyers, largely due to their recent rash if injuries and losses.
In other surprising news, according to HockeyBuzz, Flyers winger prospect Claude Giroux will make his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators. Claude Giroux has been playing for the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Currently, he leads the league in points with 88 (33 goals, 55 assists) in 47 games. He is rated as the Flyers third best prospect behind JVR and Downie.
As the Flyers try to end their current losing streak, they will be doing so without wingers Steve Downie and Joffrey Lupul. Steve Downie has an upper body injury and he will be evaluated during the game. Lupul has a high ankle sprain and will be out indefinitely. Derian Hatcher is still battling a sore knee. The good news is that defenseman Braydon Coburn will return to the lineup.
Lets see if the Flyers can end their current 6 game losing streak as well as attempt to not be swept in the season series by Montreal.
Niittymaki will get his 2nd straight start.
Flyers lost their 7th straight game and have been swept in the season series by Montreal.
After analyzing the infield, we are now taking a look at the Phillies 2008 projected outfield. All salary information will come from Cot's Baseball Contracts. All fielding stats are 2007 #s. All batting stats are 162 game averages.
Some things you may need to know:
Range Factor - (PO + A) divided by innings
Zone Rating - The percentage of balls fielded by a player in his typical defensive "zone," as measured by Stats Inc.
A - Outfield Assists
Right Field
Starter - Geoff Jenkins ($5M) - As a LF, .988 FPct., 2.30 RF (2nd in majors), .889 ZR (4th in Majors), 7A/.277/.342/.843, 87 R, 28 HR, 92 RBI, 147 Ks
Bench - Jayson Werth ($1.7M) - .983 FPct, 2.34 RF, .912 ZR, 7A/.259, .352, .782, 78 R, 16 HR, 77 RBI, 152 Ks, 12 SB
-Werth and Jenkins are expected to platoon. Both guys are above-average outfielders would good arms. They are not exactly Shane Victorino in right field, but they are by no means a defensive liability. Also, with Victorino able to cover more in Center Field than Aaron Rowand, expect the Phillies to be fine in right defensively with good arms.
Offensively, we should expect decent numbers, but it is hard to know what to expect as Jenkins performed below his average numbers last year and Jayson Werth performed above his normal averages. Jayson Werth seems like he performs better with consistent playing time, so we'll see what happens with him. There will be no need for defensive replacements in right, so both guys will be able to pinch-hit if called upon.
Center Field
Starter - Shane Victorino (0.41 M [2007] - As a CF in 2006 (60 starts), 1.000 FPct, 2.37 RF, .858 ZR, 6A/.274/.336/.741 76 R, 10 HR, 49 RBI, 23 SB, 65 Ks
Bench - So Taguchi (1.05M) - As a CF in 2007 (41 starts), .992 FPct, 2.82 RF, .876 ZR, 1A/ .283, .336, .727, 50 R, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 50 Ks, 10 SBs
- I know, I know, we've lost Aaron Rowand, but can you imagine that we may have actually upgraded in Center Field? It remains to be seen, but many feel that Victorino will be a better center fielder in 2008. Also, his arm exceeds the right arm of Aaron Rowand. I'd look for a better year from Shane offensively. Expect to see 40-50 steals this year from him. I'd also expect his average and OBP to rise a little more.
So Taguchi was a great addition by Pat Gillick because he is one of the best pinch-hitters in the league and he can pitch run in timely situations. Also, Taguchi can play all outfield positions and he's not that much of a loss at the plate as he'll likely make contact. He's another above average fielder on the Phillies roster.
Left Field
Starter - Pat Burrell ($14 M) - .948 FPct, 1.61 RF, .813 ZR, 8A/.258/.367/.849, 82 R, 31 HR, 104 RBI, 160 Ks
- We all know Pat has terrible range, but he does still have a decent arm when the ball is hit near him as he had 8 outfield assists last year. If his offensive numbers are somewhat similar to his second half last year (.290/.420/1.010 19 HR, 60 RBI), I would expect the Phillies to do very well. Pat will likely be spelled by Taguchi, Jenkins, or Werth. With so many veteran outfielders, I would not expect Dobbs to get many starts in left, but we'll see. Remember, this is a contract year for Burrell and he wants to stay in Philadelphia. Lets see if he posts similar rises over his average like Aaron Rowand did last year.
Flyers have lost their fifth straight and their eigth straight at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-3. Flyers drew one called penalty and it was on a delay of game penalty. The refs called nothing against the Lightning in regard to hooking.
The Flyers on the other hand suffered some lazy play from Jim Vandermeer, Jim Dowd, and Lasse Kukkonen.
Joffrey Lupul, Steve Downie (SH), and Jeff Carter scored for the Flyers.
Danny Briere had zero shots on goal. That is completely unacceptable when you're brought into be a scorer. You cannot be effective if you're not getting the puck on net. It has nothing to do with the lines. It has to do with Danny Briere, who is also a minus 20 on the season.
Maybe John Stevens needs to pull a Martin in Pittsburgh and just start benching people for a game who don't show up to play.
EDIT: There was a typo by the Feds. Bonds did not fail a drug test.
ESPN is reporting that Barry Bonds failed a drug test in 2001.
A month after hitting his record 73rd home run, Barry Bonds tested positive for steroids in November, 2001. The allegation comes in the federal perjury case against Bonds and says the all-time HR king received steroids from trainer Greg Anderson.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
SPRING TRAINING IS HERE! Pitchers and Catchers have reported today for the Phillies. On Saturday I will preview the Phillies outfield.
Sorry that I am late. I had to be in to work early this morning, but the 76ers won their 5th straight game last night and swept their homestand by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 102-88.
I am sure must of you were already aware of this game, so I will not analyze it.
The Flyers have called up defenseman Ryan Parent. In 53 games with the Phantoms, Parent has 1 goal and 7 assists to go along with 42 penalty minutes. Parent is better known as a shutdown defenseman, which is something the Flyers' blue line needs. He has played one NHL game in his career and that was late last season with the Flyers.
I assume this move will likely shift Lasse Kukkonen back to being a healthy scratch. Personally I rather Parent do well and we just waive Jim Vandermeer because he is atrocious.
Typically what I’ve been playing my whole career is more of a defensive side,” Parent said. “Everywhere I’ve been they have been working on me to move the puck a little bit better and be more of a puck-moving defenseman. My strength right now is definitely my defensive game.
The Phillies have signed pitcher Kris Benson to a minor-league deal.
The Phillies have come to minor-league contract agreement with free agent righthander Kris Benson. The contract is pending a physical.
The Phillies have seen Benson throw three times this off-season: once in December and twice recently in private sessions with Phillies scout Chuck LaMar. LaMar said today Benson only is throwing at 60 to 70 percent, which makes it seem doubtful he can break camp with a spot in the Phillies rotation.
Tonight the Philadelphia Flyers suffered their 4th straight losses, largely due to bad turnovers by defensemen, who have been playing very sloppy lately. It is really hard to get angry with Paul Holmgren, but the acquisition of Jim Vandermeer has been a pretty bad one. The guy is absolutely terrible.
Tonight, the Flyers lost to the Islanders 4-3 and had goals from Briere, Hartnell, and Lupul
They're playing PATHETIC hockey recently. Absolutely pathetic. The defensemen have been atrocious this year. You'd think that playing a team who has lost 7 straight would help you rebound from your losing streak, but nope.
They have Tampa, 2 against Montreal, Ottawa, and and San Jose over their next five games. The way they're playing now, they'll be lucky not to lose 9 straight total games.
Expect the Flyers to become very active in the trade market.
And Danny Briere? I know he scored today, but the guy is absolutely lost in his own zone and has been horrible when teams are at even strength since about November.
The Flyers have recalled Left Winger Kyle Greentree. Greentree had 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) for the Phantoms in 48 games. He will make his NHL debut tonight against the New York Islanders on Versus.
"I'm a little bit nervous, but more excited, though," he said. "I have been waiting for this chance my whole life. I think that I am ready, and it is obviously going to be a very exciting game for me. I am looking forward to helping the team win.
"I'm a big power forward. I get the puck in deep. I try and make big hits and when there is a chance to put the puck into the net, I try and do that. I just like to be a presence out there on the ice, kind of muck it up and create space for other guys."
Last night, Villanova was absolutely robbed on such a bullshit call by veteran official John Cahill to give Georgetown the win. In a game where both teams struggled to make shots, they found themselves knotted at 53 with 30 seconds left. Villanova had the ball and took the clock down. His errant pass was stolen and the official John Cahill called a phantom foul with only one-tenth of a second left. It was such an absolute joke and it was not the first time Nova was robbed this year -- see the N.C. State game.
Normally, I'm not one to blame losses on officials, but it seems over the last few months there have been a lot of questionable or phantom calls that have cost teams games.
The Sixers made it 4 straight with another great defensive effort as they beat the Dallas Mavericks 84-76. The Sixers trailed at half 53-50, but they only allowed 23 second-half points by forcing low percentage shots for the Mavericks. It is starting to seem like Mo Cheeks is finally finding a rotation that works well. Hopefully, he can find a way for their play on their home court to transform to the road.
Andre Miller kept up his play by going for 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. The entire team got involved because of his play. Rookie Thaddeus Young started again and added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Currently, the 76ers are only a half game out of the playoffs. They end their 5 game home stand tomorrow against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Andre Miller has been named Eastern Conference player of the week. During the 76ers 3-1 week, Miller averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 assists, and committed only ten turnovers. Also, he outscored opposing teams starting point guards 78-35.
Feb. 4 @ Atlanta: Had 29 points, six assists and six rebounds in a 96-91 loss.Miller's stock is at an all-time high recently. The only problem is teams have only been offering the 76ers cap space and draft picks for him instead of real prospects.
Feb. 5 vs. Washington: Recorded an 11-point, 14-assist double-double in a 101-96 win.
Feb. 7 vs. Miami: Posted 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 101-84 victory.
Feb. 9 vs. L.A. Clippers: Scored 17 points and dished nine assists in a 101-80 victory.
Flyers forward Simon Gagne is out indefinitely with his third concussion of the season. There is no time table for his return.
“It could be a couple of days, it could be a week or it could be longer. There is no timeframe on what is going on right now,” Gagne said. "I feel so-so. I am not feeling quite right. I am feeling a little bit off balance. That's the best way to describe the way I feel today.”
The 76ers beat the Clippers last night 101-80. The 76ers got out to the lead early and never looked back. They got into the lane and took plenty of high percentage shots as they shot 76% from the field in the first quarter. For the entire game, the Sixers outshot the Clippers 52.6% to 40.5%. The Sixers have now scored 100+ points in 3 straight games, all leading to wins. They have 2 games left on their current 5 game home stand. Defensively, the Sixers have held the opponent under 100 point games in 8 of their last 9 games.
Louis Williams - 18 points
Andre Miller - 17 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal
Samuel Dalembert - 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks
Andre Iguodala - 15 points 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals
Willie Green - 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
Thaddeus Young - 9 points, 5 rebounds
Throughout the next few weeks, I plan to outline the Philadelphia roster. First, I plan to outline the infield for you.
CERA - Catcher's Earned Run Average. Earned-run average of club's pitchers with a particular catcher behind the plate
Catcher
Starter - Carlos Ruiz (0.38 Million [2007]) - .997 FPct, 7.32 Range Factor, 5 passed balls, threw out 26 of 83 runners, 4.62 Catcher ERA/.260 avg/.336 obp/.738 ops, 54 R, 10 HR, 73 RBI, 7 SB, 65 Ks
Bench - Chris Coste (0.385 Million [2007]) - 1.000 FPct, 6.27 RF, 2 PB, threw out 6 of 21 runners, 4.93 Catcher ERA/.301, .351, .822, 57 R, 17 HR, 71 RBI, 73 Ks
- Carlos Ruiz made the All-Rookie Team as a catcher in a very thin class. Carlos Ruiz was very good defensively and has one of the better arms in the league. Coste provides a better bat, but the game he calls is not the greatest.
1st Baseman
Starter - Ryan Howard (TBA) - .991 FPct, 12 errors, 9.38 RF, .802 Zone Rating/ .291/.397/1.007, 101 R, 51 HR, 139 RBI, 195 Ks
Bench - Wes Helms (2.15 M) - .990 FPct, 1 error, 8.50 RF, .667 Zone Rating/.265, .326, .761, 42 R, 13 HR, 56 RBI, 96 Ks
Bench - Greg Dobbs (0.385 [2007]) - 1.00 FPct, 9.95 RF, .857 Zone Rating/ .266/.314/.724, 41 R, 8 HR, 58 RBI, 3 SB, 74 Ks
- It should not be news to you that Ryan Howard is an awful defensive first baseman. Many of his errors come from errant throws. He'll make some nice plays here and there, but you should not expect anything special. Wes Helms will most likely be designated for assignment or traded by the time opening day comes around. Greg Dobbs is an upgrade defensively over Howard, but not much. Howard's bat generally makes up for his horrific defense.
2nd Basemen
Starter - Chase Utley (7.5 M) - .985 FPct, 10 E, 5.10 RF, .874 ZR/ .300/.374/.897 106 R, 27 HR, 109 RBI, 13 SB, 100 Ks
Bench - Eric Bruntlett (0.600 M) - Numbers as SS: .961 FPct, 7 E, 4.41 RF, .822 ZR/His offensive numbers are not worth talking about. He is that bad.
- Put it this way, if Utley goes down with injury again, expect the Phillies to make another move like they did last year for Iguchi. Bruntlett by no means is a viable long-term replacement. He is an above-average fielder, however and could provide Utley, whom never wants a rest, some possible needed rest. Utley, himself, is one of the best, if not the best defensive second baseman in baseball. Utley is also one of the best all-around hitters in baseball.
Shortstop
Starter - Jimmy Rollins (7.0 M) - .985 FPct, 11 E, 4.41 RF, .824 ZR/ .277/.331/.772 112 R, 17 HR, 71 RBI, 36 SB, 93 Ks
Bench - Eric Bruntlett - See Above
- Jimmy Rollins is coming off an arguable gold glove year. Personally, I think Tulowitzki should have won it and would have if he were not a rookie, but the hype was all about Rollins. Rollins is an above-average short stop. His range is not the absolute best, but he has a very strong arm and makes some fantastic plays. Bruntlett has very similar numbers as Rollins at the short stop position. As a hitter, Rollins has become a great all-around batter and his only stat, I'd like to see improve is his on base percentage. I wouldn't mind sacrificing some home runs to see him get on base more. Beggars cannot be choosers and I'll take anything relatively close to last year.
Third Baseman
Starter - Pedro Feliz (4.25 M) - .973 FPct, 11 E, 2.97 RF, .852 ZR/ .252/.288/.721 64 R, 20 HR, 77 RBI, 93 Ks
Bench - Greg Dobbs - .945 FPct, 7 E, 2.61 RF, .718 ZR/ See Above
Bench - Wes Helms - .932 FPct, 9 E, 2.53 RF, .761 ZR/ See Above
The addition of Pedro Feliz has given the Phillies one of the best, if not the best defensive third baseman in baseball. Feliz's big knock however is his terrible on base percentage. When Wes Helms finds first base more than you, you know you have a problem. He needs to develop more plate patience, but it seems too be a little too late in his career for that to happen. Feliz does have some home run pop and he should add a few in the home park, but who knows. For some reason Wes Helms couldn't. Last year, the Phillies had twice as many errors by their third baseman as they had home runs. Greg Dobbs will get some opportunities against right-handed pitching, but it is nice to know there likely will not be that much of a platoon this year.
Overall, the Phillies have a pretty good defensive infield and I would consider them one of the best in the majors. Last year, they were the 5th best defensive infield and their overall numbers should improve.
Offensively, the Phillies may have the best power numbers by an infield and the best all-around offensive numbers. If Feliz even slightly improves his offensive numbers, watch out. Also, I expect some big improvement offensively from Carlos Ruiz this year.
ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets plan to target Patriots' free-agent cornerback, Asante Samuel. Samuel has said he plans to re-sign with New England, but he will listen to offers and not give a hometown discount. I assume this largely has to do with the fact he looked for a long-term deal last year, but was franchised tagged.
Samuel will likely look for somewhere around the 8 year, 80 million contract that Nate Clements got in an overpriced deal with the 49ers.
If the Eagles happen to sign Asante Samuel, it will be a great move. The move will add a play-maker to the secondary and also add insurance to our oft-injured corners. With the move, Sheldon Brown will hopefully be moved to safety, his position when drafted, and Samuel would play opposite of Sheppard. A guy who creates turnovers will be a big plus for the Eagles offense as well. We'll see what happens as free agency will begin at the end of the month.
Another rumor: This rumor does not have much weight, but there has been a rumor going around of Reggie Brown and draft picks for Roy Williams who is in the last year of his contract.
In back to back games, the Flyers have failed to solve Rangers backup goaltender Steve Valiquette as he saved all 31 shots fired at him. The Flyers have been outscored 6-0 by the Rangers in their last two home games against them.
Also, the Flyers will now be without defenseman Braydon Coburn who needs to have emergency surgery on a glut muscle in his leg.
There were some positives as the Flyers won 3 fights to the Rangers 1 victory and we saw the return of Joffrey Lupul. Lupul played great and outside of his previous hot scoring touch, you would have never thought he missed or game.
Overall, the Flyers were outplayed to the puck for most of the game. They better find a way to rebound tomorrow against now first-place Pittsburgh.
Everything seems to be quiet on the Forsberg front. GM Paul Holmgren has not heard from Forsberg on whether or not he is healthy enough to commit to play and with whom he'll chose to return. A source in Europe has said Forsberg's only decision now is whether he is healthy to play. If he does return, it'll be with the Flyers.
[Philly Inquirer]
Today, Flyers' right winger, Joffrey Lupul, will return to action when the Flyers host the New York Rangers. Lupul has been out of the lineup since his January 5th collision with Derian Hatcher to caused him to have a spinal cord contusion and mild concussion.
During practice yesterday, Lupul skated with Richards and Gagne. With Scottie Upshall out for at least a week, coach John Stevens has place Danny Briere with Scott Hartnell and Steve Downie.
John Stevens said,
“I think putting Danny with Hartnell and Downie, who is relentless on the cycle, is a really good fit for Danny. I’d like to see Danny become more of a scorer on his line. He’s such an unselfish guy. I think at times when he could take the puck to the net he’s looking to pass it off. To me, the strength of his game is the first option he gets to attack, that he does.Tune in today at 1PM to watch the Flyers battle the Rangers. I think today is a must-win as we play Pittsburg tomorrow afternoon.
“Richie and Lupul play really well together, and I do think it gives us size and some grit and some energy on all of our lines. It’s a nice balanced attack for scoring, and it gives us a balanced attack in terms of size and grit and skill all combined on each line.”
