The Sixers vs. Iguodala

Wednesday, October 31, 2007 · 0 Comments

The Sixers have left their best offer on the table for Andre Iguodala. The deal reported to be 5 years, 55 million. If they do not sign Iguodala to an extension tonight, they will not be able to negotiate with him until July 1st, but he will remain a restricted free-agent.
-Philadelphia Daily News

The 76ers open the season tonight in Toronto. What are you expectations? I found it hard to believe that this game will reach the 30 win mark.

Schilling Releases List

Curt Schilling has released a list of the 12 teams he'd consider joining with a one year deal. His first choice is the Red Sox obviously, but he knows the likelihood that he will not be re-signed.

The teams are: Cleveland, Detroit, Anaheim, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dodgers, San Diego, Arizona, Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee

I suggest everyone follows the link, his blog, and asks him politely to come to Philly.

Aaron Rowand, the Free Agent

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 · 1 Comments

Aaron Rowand has officially filed for free agency. The Phillies have until November 12th to exclusively negotiate with Rowand. The Phillies are looking to sign Rowand to a deal similar to that of Eric Byrnes' 3 year, $30 million deal, but it has been reported that Rowand wants double the years and more than double the money.

Carlos Silva, Mark Loretta, Mariano Rivera, Francisco Cordero, and possibly Curt Schilling, once he files, appear to be their targets in free agency.

Pat Gillick has stated that pitching first, upgrading third base, second.

Don't get your hopes up with A-Rod and Lowell.

Congrats Red Sox

Monday, October 29, 2007 · 5 Comments

Congratulations Boston Red Sox fans as your team became the 2007 World (U.S.A./Toronto) Champions. The Red Sox were clearly the best team in baseball all season and showed it by sweeping the Rockies. It is nice to see a General Manager put a real team together. Now, I hope Josh Beckett returns to being Bombs Away Beckett.

Other News:

A-Rod choose to opt out of his contract Sunday night. I think this was such a scumbag move by a selfish human being in an attempt to steal some of the press from the Boston Red Sox. Phillies fans, don't get excited, A-Rod would never be pursued by the Phillies or want to come here in a million years. I don't want him either. I think he is a classless pre-madonna that would just die here in Philly.

Also, Phillies fans, do not get excited that the Red Sox will go after A-Rod. Theo Epstein has already stated that he wants to re-sign the World Series MVP, Mike Lowell. Even if A-Rod went to Boston, we'd have to compete with the New York Yankees for Lowell. If history hasn't shown you, we do not get into bidding wars.

Other news on the Yankees front is that they will hire Joe Girardi will be hired as the next New York Yankees manager. It has also been reported that Mariano Rivera will actively test the free-agent market.

Like I said, don't get too excited.

Eagles win 23-17. Sorry Purple Jesus.

Oh my, the Eagles won a game. Sadly, this 3-4 team is a dumb coaching decision and defensive collapse away from being 5-2. Yesterday, McNabb and crew played a pretty flawless offensive game and kept Adrian Peterson (20 carries, 70 yards) to lead a 23-16 victory over Minnesota. Of course it was against one of the worst pass defenses in football, but they made the plays and outside of the first red zone drive, the correct play call.

Maybe Donovan is finally back to 100% as a quarterback. He also looked as mobile as he used to be, after the first leg injury. The running game wasn't exactly there, but you cannot say it was not from lack of trying. Though the run/pass ratio was not exactly where you want it o be, they got the big runs when they needed them against the best rush defense in football (and damn near NFL history).

A win is a win and the team improves to 3-4 and prepares to host the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

As you may have heard over the weekend, Randy Jones hit Patrice Bergeron from behind and for awhile it looked like Bergeron was dead on the ice. Randy Jones received a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. What do you think Jones suspension should be, if any?

Once the players were on the floor, it was the White team led by the guard tandem of sophomore Reggie Redding and freshman Corey Fisher that paced the squad to a 28-19 victory in a four-quarter game. Both players connected twice from three-point range and finished with 10 points, while junior Dwayne Anderson grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Blue team fell into a big hole early but nearly climbed back into the game thanks to sharp-shooting and seven points from junior forward Shane Clark. Redshirt freshman forward Antonio Pena pulled down two rebounds and freshmen guards Corey Stokes and Malcolm Grant each made a three-pointer, as did sophomore guard and returning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Scottie Reynolds. Why would we sign a much needed left-handed reliever who performed well for us down the stretch?

...Oh Florida

The Flyers went 0 for Florida to start of their 8 game road trip. Now, the 6-3-0 Flyers travel to face the Bruins for a matinee game on Saturday. The Flyers played last night without Derian Hatcher who was given a rest and Simon Gagne who is still experiencing dizziness. The Lightening never trailed in their 5-2 victory. Scott Hartnell failed to record a goal again, but at least he recorded a fight defeat to Vinny Lecavalier.

I am not too fond of John Stevens' decision to start Biron vs the Panthers and Niittymaki for Tampa Bay, but I am not sure if it would have really mattered. The Flyers are lacking in attack time recently, their power play has lucked ugly at times, and their giving up far too many shots.

They will get a much needed boost on November 1st against Montreal as Scottie Upshall is expected to return to action.

The Flyers need to put an end to this streak and start another win streak. I cannot handle another really hot/really cold team in Philadelphia right now.

Flyers Streak Ends!

The Flyers five game winning streak was snapped last night in Sunrise, Florida. Luckily for them, no one was there to see it. The Flyers lost 4-3 last night after battling back from a 2 goal deficit to even the score in the second period. The youngsters of Carter, Umberger, Richards, and Lopul continued to shine, but the Flyers eventually just gave up too many chances to the Panthers. Marty Biron stopped 38 shots in the loss.

Simon Gagne left the bench midway through the first period after experiencing dizziness when his head connected with Jay Bouwmeester's elbow. There was no penalty called on the play. He is listed as day-to-day.

Where do we lay the blame?

Monday, October 22, 2007 · 0 Comments

It could be any of the following:

1 - Andy Reid? His terrible decisions to go with the pass to run down the clock again. He just loves choking in must win games. His awful red zone play-calling.
2 - Reggie Brown? His dropped touchdown continued our red zone blues.
3 - The rest of receiving corps? Their inability to get separation against man-press coverage is terrible.
4- Sean Considine? The constant view of our safeties with their backs to the ball while the receiver catches it for a touch down. How about when his little self jumped for the big hit and missed the receiver completely as he got more yards after the catch.
5- The Prevent to Lose Defense? - Throughout the entire game the Eagles had very little pressure on Griese and it continued to show on the final drive. The Bears WRs find all the holes in our zone.
6 - Jeffrey Lurie? Sure, he does not have a direct impact on this game, but he has had an impact on the season and seasons in the past. He is afraid to go after the risky, pricey free agent target and instead extends Andy Reid's terrible draft picks to long-term deals.
7- The Refs? Juqua Thomas was tackled on the touchdown throw, but there was no call. Also, the call against William James for defensive holding when it was clearly shown that he never held the receiver or came close to it and it was really the first time that a Eagles DB actually pressed a receiver well. The play was third down and Griese was sacked on it, but they got a new set of downs because of the bogus penalty
8 - Us? Did we over-hype this team too much, even when we know they did not fill one hole through free agency or the draft besides bringing in Spikes. We all know we needed not one, but two new safeties for depth or the starting strong safety job along with help at corner. We knew we really needed help at the wide receiver position. But we deemed the team to beat in possibly the NFC or the NFC East. Shame on us.

So what do you want to happen now? We're already 1-4 against the NFC and we would need to go 7-3 over the rest of the season just to finish 9-7. Is it worth it anymore to jeopardize a decent draft pick? I mean seriously, if this team made the playoffs this season, they do not have enough to win one game, let alone 3 to get to the super bowl.

Does it really matter if Andy Reid is still on the sidelines and drafting the players anyway?

Let this one sink in...Temple University has more wins on Lincoln Financial Field than the Philadelphia Eagles and more wins in general...Temple!

Flyers Fight For Five!

The 'Orange and Black' battled back yesterday and beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in overtime. It was my first time in attendance for the 2007-2008 and it was an amazing time, even with that very awful showing in the second period. The Flyers were out-shot and out-skated for much of the game, but they took advantage of their opportunities and didn't allow great scoring chances for the Hurricanes. Simon Gagne netted two goals including the game-winner in OT. Marty Biron stopped 42 of 44 shots to seal the victory.

Mike Richards tied the game at 2 on the power play in third. He really is becoming the player he was supposed to be and then some. On a side note, he has scored in three straight games. He does it all folks: wins face-offs, quarterbacks the power play, kills penalties, fights, hits, whatever the team needs. We might be seeing our little version of Steve Yzerman developing right before our eyes.

This was the last game of the four game sweep of a home stand. The Flyers will now go on a eight game road strip starting Wednesday against the Panthers.

In other news, right now the Flyers have the upper hand to bring back Forsberg. Of course they can make room for him, but is it worth it to mess with chemistry? Which line would he play on?

Temple Wins 3 Straight!

The Temple Owls have won three straight games and improved to 3-5 on the season. (they should be 4-4, but no, the Big East officiating crew wanted UCONN to win.)

Yesterday, the Owls beat MAC-East division leading Miami (Ohio) 24-17 at Lincoln Financial Field. Temple has played competitive football just about every time they stepped on the field this year, and they may have finally found a groove. The young Owls mustered out a win even after losing their starting quarterback Adam DiMichele to a season ending leg injury. This is Temple's first three game winning streak since 1990.

Division 1 football in Philly? Hey, I'll take it. It is something to do on a Saturday when Penn State is playing a weak team or a late game. Check them out when they host Penn State (11/10) and Kent State (11/17). If you are looking for Penn State tickets, I believe tickets are still available at Owl Sports. For the Kent State game, you should be able to buy tickets at the gate. It is a cheap and easy way to take your kids to see a college football game...or just another reason to tailgate.

The Flyers have yet to allow power play goal on their home ice and they have allowed only 3 goals in the last 4 games including two straight shutouts by Biron (which makes me happy that he has a streak because I do not want to watch Nitty play goalie in person.) Also, the flyers +15 goal differential is the best in the league. The next closest is the +10 Hurricanes that we see on Saturday.

Back with a Vengeance!

Ladies and Gentleman, meet your first place Flyers. Yes, I know it is only through game 5, but frankly I do not give a shit. Last night, the Flyers recorded their 8th point through only 5 games, a feat that took 16 games last year, with a 4-0 shutout of the Atlanta Thrashers. The entire looks so fast out there right now. It is nice to see a blue line unit actually play well for a change. They are getting to puck quickly and placing themselves in perfect positions to block shots.

Who has shined the most? Michael Richards and Jeff Carter. Sure, Briere has played phenomenal, but it is was he is supposed to do. We as Flyers fans have waited for Michael Richards and Carter to break out and it seems as if they finally have. Michael Richards is your future captain of the Flyers. He can do it all. He's developed into a play-maker, a penalty killer, and a point man on the power play. Jeff Carter on the other hand has really benefited from being a line mate with Joffrey Lupul who leads the Flyers in assists thus far with 5. Carter is tied for the Flyers lead in goals scored with 4.

This is the scary thing, right now the Flyers top line is a minus-2. Every other player on the Flyers is either an even or a plus player. Randy Jones specifically is a plus-7 player. He is really developing into a fine defenseman.

Who has been your favorite player thus far? (I have fixed the comment setting and I have now allowed comments by anyone)

See you later Boulerice

The Philadelphia Flyers have decided to release Jesse Boulerice.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said the decision was based on the team's need for more roster space while dealing with injuries. "It just gives us more freedom to do more things with our roster, that's all,'' Holmgren said. "Other than that, there's nothing behind it.''

It'll be interesting to see if teams start to take runs at our big names and we basically are left with only Riley Cote to take care of the problems. Ben Eager is currently listed as day to day after he left the Islanders game because of dizziness.

No way! Goodell to the rescue again.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to change the way the draft is run. In order to make it more fan- (and TV-) friendly, teams will have 10 minutes instead of 15 minutes in the first round to make a choice (later rounds will also be shaved) in a move that could be announced as early as next week’s league meetings.

Also, there are changes being considered for the Pro Bowl, including playing the game in the off weekend between the conference championships and the Super Bowl (although it would eliminate players from the Super Bowl teams) and perhaps rotating it between cities. “I think (the Pro Bowl) is getting a little bit tired,” Goodell said. “It’s not a great way to celebrate our game (as is).”

- Setting a rookie salary cap is “high on our list” of things to do. “I believe players should be well compensated but they should have to earn it,” Goodell said

- Talk about cutting the preseason back a game or two has been discussed but that those discussions are only in the “infant stage”

Monday Morning Quarterback

A win is a win.

First and foremost, I attended the game yesterday and the Jets' fans were absolutely terrible. Eagles' fans were everywhere and it felt like we were watching a tennis match.

Now onto my analysis.

Offense - McNabb and his crew were not exactly amazing, but they did enough and put the Eagles in the situation to score at least 22 points. Also, the offense converted 9 of 16 third downs, which is definitely an improvement on the season. McNabb did miss some wide open receivers and he still holds on to the ball instead of throwing it out of bounds.

Example: On the play where McNabb was rushed out of the pocket and sacked along the sideline, he should have just thrown the ball out of bounds; however, before that even happened, he had Reggie Brown wide open on a crossing route. And I know one may argue that well it may have been a tough throw because he was running, but that is not the case at all. Brown was wide open while McNabb was standing in the pocket, seconds before he was flushed out.

I'd like to see a little more balance in the play calling. When all was said and done the Eagles threw 35 times and ran 28 times. They ran 6 times and threw once on the final drive, so before that there balance looked like 34-22, 60-40 again. The running game was working all day and I can understand if they did not want to give Westbrook a huge workload, but he proved he could carry the load and the line has been opening holes all season for their ball carriers (The Eagles offense is tied for second in the league averaging 4.9 yards a carry).

There were a ton of positives from this game. McNabb was only sacked three times and only once when McNabb really had no other option but to take the sack. The offensive line played well the entire game and it was nice to have our entire left side back out their playing. On a windy day, McNabb threw the ball well and was accurate for the most part. He was hitting his wide outs in stride once again. The Eagles really need to improve their third down efficiency numbers on the opposing team's side of the field. Yesterday we were 0-4 in the Red Zone forcing 4 field goal attempts, 2 being missed. Akers has continued to struggle in Giants stadium (6 for 14 lifetime) and the winds by no means were helping when he missed two attempts at the same end.

Also, I will give McNabb credit on Curtis' touchdown. McNabb called for the slant when the blitz was coming. He threw the pass perfectly in stride and truthfully he threw all of his slant patterns pretty well today. It was also nice to see Reggie Brown "break out" a little. If the Eagles want continued success he is going to have to continue to step up.

Defense - The defense has been great all season. Outside of Thomas Jones' first half, and really his first quarter, he was shut down the rest of the day. He had a few runs here and there, but nothing entirely spectacular. They have allowed only 6 touchdowns all season and 3 came against Detroit, a game where the Eagles led 35-7 at one point. They made the second half adjustments necessary to stop the run and they got some pressure on Pennington. I was sketchy with our linebacker situation at the beginning of the year, but they have played well along with Broderick Bunkley. Will James drifted back into his history of being burnt at Giants stadium. Cotchery was open often, but Pennington was not exactly able to get it to him. We really need Sheppard back. Mikell has done well in a backup role for Dawkins (who might not be coming back for awhile, if he does at all.) The Eagles and B-Dawk have been real 'hush hush' about his injury.

Special Teams - Our kickoff coverage is still terrible. It seems like whenever the opposing team makes a return they are often starting past their 30 yard line. Rocca had a big punt on the first drive in the 3rd quarter (64 yards) and a wobbly one in the fourth, which looked not only to be tipped, but was also kicked straight into the wind. As I mentioned earlier, Akers continued his struggles at Giants stadium, but he did pound 2 through.

Final Word - The Eagles improved to 8-0 all-time against the Jets and 9-0 after the bye week during Reid's reign. I am not quite sure if the team that won this game is that much better than their record suggested, but a win is a win and Chicago comes to The Linc next weekend. Brian Westbrook had his second straight 100 yard effort. He has had at least 85 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving in every game this season.

They're all back!

Saturday, October 13, 2007 · 0 Comments

If you were looking for any sort of change with the Philadelphia Phillies coaching staff, you will not see it happen. The entire coaching staff has been re-signed.

I think the coaching staff works well together and has helped the team, BUT I cannot stand Steve Smith coaching third. Sure he did get a little better over the season, but some of his blunders really cost us early on. Also, I am on the fence regarding Dubee. I think he made something out of our nothing pitching staff, along with the fact Kendrick, Romero, and Myers have all faired better while Dubee has been here. On the other hand, our staff has seen a lot of injuries and I think conditioning should take some of the blame. Should that blame be pointed toward the pitching staff or the pitching coach? I am not quite sure. I am sure he'd look a hell of a lot better if he actually had real talent to work with.

In other Phillies news, CJ Henry has been released. You can read the article about it here.
Just another Phillies trade in their history where in the end they have received nothing in return.

The NHL is still a joke.

How does this hit not award a penalty and/or suspension? How is one blow to the head more legal than the next? Oh wait, I know Tootoo is a somebody and Steve Downie and Bouelrice are nobodies. Now, both Flyers players received the proper suspensions (if the NHL continues their new policy with everyone -- which it seems they are not.) The NHL only wants to make examples of young kid in Downie and a nobody like Boulerice.

On a side note, Holmgren has stated that Boulerice received what he deserved, calling his play "careless" and "senseless."

Schilling wants back in pinstripes!

The Philly Inquirer is reporting that the Phillies would be on Curt Schilling's short list of teams to pitch for if he does not resign with the Boston Red Sox.

Curt Schilling has always expressed interest in wanting to finish his career with the Phillies. Also, a one year contract would be a perfect fit for what the Phillies are trying to do financially, especially for a 41 year old pitcher and most especially when long-term contract extensions for Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels are looming. Hamels and Schilling at the top would be nice. There is also talk that the Phillies would pursue closer Mariano Rivera if he reaches the market. If this happens Myers could be moved back to the rotation or remain in the bullpen and become a perfect set-up man.

Discuss.

A small introduction...

We Hate to Lose began in October 2007. The initial purpose of the website was to provide news updates and commentary on all four major sports teams in Philadelphia. Because of time-constraints, in April of 2009, I decided to post only on my first-love, the Philadelphia Phillies.

My name is Justin Evans and I hope you enjoy the site.
